What is the standard pendant light height?
The standard pendant light hangs 30 inches above the table or counter — 76.20 cm — close enough to light the food on the table without blocking the sightline across it, which is why it flatters a dinner table and a kitchen island alike. Hang pendants 30–36 inches above the tabletop so the light falls on the plates and not in anyone’s eyes; over a kitchen island, the same 30–36 inches keeps the light on the work surface without glaring into the cook’s eyes.
Three things about the model are worth stating plainly.
First, the centimetres are inches × 2.54 — 30 × 2.54 = 76.20 cm. Second, the bands are closed at both ends: low pendant light 24–29 inches, standard pendant light 30–36 inches, high pendant light 37–42 inches — so 29 inches is a low pendant light, 36 inches is a standard pendant light and 42 inches is a high pendant light. And third, heights of 43 inches and above, and below 24 inches, match NO standard pendant light type — too high above the table to light it, or too low and in the way — and the gaps between the bands, 29.99 inches and 36.99 inches, match no standard type either; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.
The worked example, line by line
Setup: 30 inches above the table.

At 36.99 inches it matches no standard type at all.
A warning about the neighbours: every neighbour above sits one hundredth of an inch from the star, and every neighbour displays as the target when rounded to two decimals, yet sits below or above it. The centimetre figure is displayed to two decimals, half-up. The page prints the unrounded centimetre figures so the rounding does not mislead you: 80.0100, 79.9846, 89.9922, 90.0176, 76.2000, 76.1746, 100.0252, 99.9998, 109.9820, 110.0074, 93.9800 and 93.9546. Two values need a special note: at 39.37 in the unrounded figure is 99.9998 cm — it displays as 100.00 cm and it is below 100.00 cm — and at 43.31 in the unrounded figure is 110.0074 cm — it displays as 110.01 cm and it is above 110.00 cm.

Who uses this
- The homeowner hanging a new pendant: they learn 30 inches is 76.20 cm and a standard pendant light — and they check the 31.50 reverse to see the height that reaches 80.00 cm.
- The host setting a dinner table: they learn a pendant at 30 inches lights the food without blocking the sightline — and they check the 35.43 reverse to see the largest height that stays at or below 90.00 cm.
- The tall household: they learn a high pendant light is 37–42 inches above the table — and they check the 37.00 reverse to see the height that matches a high pendant light.
- The remodeler measuring from the surface: they learn to measure from the surface to the BOTTOM of the shade, not to the top of the cord — and they check the 43.30 reverse to see the largest height that stays at or below 110.00 cm.
Accuracy & limitations
The math is first-principles: centimetres = inches × 2.54, displayed to two decimals half-up; the bands are closed at both ends — low pendant light 24–29 inches, standard pendant light 30–36 inches, high pendant light 37–42 inches — so 29 inches is a low pendant light, 36 inches is a standard pendant light and 42 inches is a high pendant light. Heights of 43 inches and above, and below 24 inches, match no standard pendant light type: too high above the table to light it, or too low and in the way — and the gaps between the bands, 29.99 inches and 36.99 inches, match no standard type either — the table and the reverses say so, they never force a height into a type. The height in inches is floored at 0 — a negative height input shows 0.00 cm and no matching type, never a negative number. At 0 inches the figure is 0.00 cm and matches no standard type. At 39.37 inches the figure is 100.00 cm (unrounded 99.9998 cm) — displays 100.00 cm but is below 100.00 cm. At 43.31 inches the figure is 110.01 cm (unrounded 110.0074 cm) — displays 110.01 cm but is above 110.00 cm. What the model cannot do is judge the fitting: it says nothing about the pendant’s width against the table — a pendant too small for the table looks lost — the wiring, the dimmer, or the ceiling box for a vaulted or concrete ceiling. Over a dining table, hang pendants 30–36 inches above the tabletop so the light falls on the plates and not in anyone’s eyes; over a kitchen island, the same 30–36 inches keeps the light on the work surface without glaring into the cook’s eyes. Hang one pendant per two feet of island — a six-foot island takes three — and space them evenly so the light pools do not overlap or leave dark gaps. Measure from the SURFACE to the bottom of the shade — the cord length above the shade does not count — or the pendant ends up higher than planned and lights the ceiling instead of the table. Use it to find the right band — then check the width, the wiring and the mount before you buy.

Frequently asked questions
What is the standard pendant light height?
30 inches — 76.20 cm. A standard pendant light hangs 30 inches above the table or counter — close enough to light the food without blocking the sightline across the table.
How do I convert pendant light height from inches to centimetres?
Multiply the inches by 2.54. 30 inches × 2.54 = 76.20 cm. 36 inches × 2.54 = 91.44 cm. 42 inches × 2.54 = 106.68 cm.
What height matches a low pendant light?
24–29 inches above the table or counter. A low pendant light suits a low ceiling or a small table — and 29 inches is the tallest low pendant light.
What height matches a high pendant light?
37–42 inches above the table or counter. A high pendant light suits a high ceiling or a large dining table — and 42 inches is the tallest high pendant light.
What height matches no standard pendant light type?
43 inches and above, below 24 inches, and the gaps 29.99 and 36.99 inches. The ranges are closed — 24–29, 30–36 and 37–42 inches — so a height of 29.99 inches matches no standard type.
Why does 39.37 inches show 100.00 cm when it is below 100.00 cm?
Because the unrounded height is 99.9998 cm. 39.37 inches × 2.54 = 99.9998 cm, which rounds half-up to 100.00 cm — but it is still below the 100.00 cm line. The page prints the unrounded value so the rounding does not mislead you.
Why does 43.31 inches show 110.01 cm when it is above 110.00 cm?
Because the unrounded height is 110.0074 cm. 43.31 inches × 2.54 = 110.0074 cm, which rounds half-up to 110.01 cm — but it is still above the 110.00 cm line. The page prints the unrounded value so the rounding does not mislead you.
Should I measure from the table or the ceiling?
From the table or counter surface. Measure from the SURFACE to the bottom of the shade — the cord length above the shade does not count — or the pendant ends up higher than planned.
