How tall should a lamp be?

Lamp height is measured in inches in the US and in centimetres everywhere else — 1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly. Total lamp height includes the base and the shade, measured from the surface the lamp sits on to the top of the shade (the finial). The rule for a comfortable lamp is that the bottom of the shade sits at eye level when you are seated — about 42 inches from the floor for a typical sofa — so the lamp height depends on the table it sits on: a tall table needs a short lamp, a low table needs a taller one. Lamps are sold in standard heights: 24 inches is the most common standard table lamp height, 14–18 inches is the desk lamp for task lighting, and 28–36 inches is the tall table lamp, with buffet lamps in between for sideboards. Two things about the model are worth stating plainly. First, the height in centimetres is the height in inches times 2.54 — 24 × 2.54 = 60.96 cm. Second, the matching types are every lamp type whose height range contains your height — at 24 inches that is three types: bedside table lamp, standard table lamp, buffet lamp; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.

The worked example, line by line

Setup: 24-inch height.

Line 1 — the height in centimetres. The height in centimetres is 24 × 2.54 = 60.96 cm.

Line 2 — the matching types. The lamp types whose height range contains 24 inches are bedside table lamp, standard table lamp, buffet lamp — three types.

Line 3 — the switch from a standard table lamp to a tall table lamp. Switching from a 24-inch standard table lamp to a 36-inch tall table lamp adds 12 inches — 30.48 cm.

Accuracy & limitations

The math is first-principles: the height in centimetres is the height in inches times 2.54, rounded to two decimals half-up; the matching types are the lamp types whose height range contains your height; the height in inches is floored at 0 — a negative height input shows 0.00 cm and no matching type, never a negative number. The reverses are judged on the UNROUNDED centimetre figure: at 35.44 in the height is 90.0176 cm unrounded, which rounds to 90.02 cm, so it reaches the 90.00 cm target; at 35.43 in the height is 89.9922 cm unrounded, which rounds to 89.99 cm, so it does not. What the model cannot do is set your lamp height: the heights in the table are the standard figures, not a rule for every room — when a supplier quotes a height in centimetres, check whether it includes the shade — some list the base only, and the shade adds several centimetres; a lamp that is too tall glares into your eyes when you sit beside it; a lamp that is too short leaves the ceiling dark and the pool of light too small to read by; and a 36-inch lamp on a low nightstand looks top-heavy and topples easily.
