What is the standard chandelier height?
The standard chandelier hangs 30 inches above the dining table — 76.20 cm — close enough to light the plates and low enough to keep the light out of diners’ eyes. Hang it low for an intimate dinner — 30 inches feels close and warm — and higher for a bright, airy room — 36 inches lifts the light and opens the sightlines across the table.
Three things about the model are worth stating plainly.
First, the centimetres are inches × 2.54 — 30 × 2.54 = 76.20 cm. Second, the bands are closed at both ends: low chandelier 24–29 inches, standard chandelier 30–36 inches, high chandelier 37–42 inches — so 29 inches is a low chandelier, 36 inches is a standard chandelier and 42 inches is a high chandelier. And third, heights of 43 inches and above, and below 24 inches, match NO standard chandelier type — too high above the table to light it, or too low to clear heads and sightlines; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.
The worked example, line by line
Setup: 30 inches above the dining table.
Line 1 — the centimetres. The centimetres are 30 × 2.54 = 76.20 cm.
Line 2 — the band. 30 inches falls in the standard band (30–36 inches) — it matches a standard chandelier.
Line 3 — the check. 29.99 inches is 76.17 cm (unrounded 76.1746 cm) — below the 30-inch line — and matches no standard type at all.
Line 4 — the check. 37 inches is 93.98 cm — the smallest height to match a high chandelier — and at 36.99 inches the figure is 93.95 cm (unrounded 93.9546 cm) and matches no standard type at all.
Line 5 — the check. 42 inches is 106.68 cm — the tallest high chandelier — and 43 inches is 109.22 cm, above the high band, matching no standard type.

At 36.99 inches it matches no standard type at all.
A warning about the neighbours: every neighbour above sits one hundredth of an inch from the star, and every neighbour displays as the target when rounded to two decimals, yet sits below or above it. The centimetre figure is displayed to two decimals, half-up. The page prints the unrounded centimetre figures so the rounding does not mislead you: 80.0100, 79.9846, 89.9922, 90.0176, 76.1746, 100.0252, 99.9998, 109.9820, 110.0074 and 93.9546. Two values need a special note: at 31.50 in the unrounded figure is 80.0100 cm — it displays as 80.01 cm and it is above 80.00 cm — and at 43.30 in the unrounded figure is 109.9820 cm — it displays as 109.98 cm and it is below 110.00 cm.

Who uses this
- The homeowner hanging a new chandelier: they learn 30 inches is 76.20 cm and a standard chandelier — and they check the 31.50 reverse to see the height that reaches 80.00 cm.
- The host planning an intimate dinner: they learn a low chandelier is 24–29 inches above the table — and they check the 37.00 reverse to see the height that matches a high chandelier.
- The tall household: they learn a high chandelier is 37–42 inches above the table — and they check the 43.30 reverse to see the largest height that stays at or below 110.00 cm.
- The remodeler measuring from the table: they learn to measure from the table surface to the LOWEST point of the fixture, not to the top of the chain — and they check the 35.43 reverse to see the largest height that stays at or below 90.00 cm.
Accuracy & limitations
The math is first-principles: centimetres = inches × 2.54, displayed to two decimals half-up; the bands are closed at both ends — low chandelier 24–29 inches, standard chandelier 30–36 inches, high chandelier 37–42 inches — so 29 inches is a low chandelier, 36 inches is a standard chandelier and 42 inches is a high chandelier. Heights of 43 inches and above, and below 24 inches, match no standard chandelier type: too high above the table to light it, or too low to clear heads and sightlines — the table and the reverses say so, they never force a height into a type. The height in inches is floored at 0 — a negative height input shows 0.00 cm and no matching type, never a negative number. At 0 inches the figure is 0.00 cm and matches no standard type. At 35.44 inches the figure is 90.02 cm (unrounded 90.0176 cm) — displays 90.02 cm but is above 90.00 cm. At 31.49 inches the figure is 79.98 cm (unrounded 79.9846 cm) — displays 79.98 cm but is below 80.00 cm. What the model cannot do is judge the fitting: it says nothing about the chandelier’s width against the table — about one-half to two-thirds of the table’s width — the chain or rod length, the dimmer, or the ceiling mount for a sloped ceiling. In an open room or foyer with no table below, the bottom of the chandelier should clear at least 7 feet (84 inches) above the floor, so nobody walks into it. Measure from the table surface to the LOWEST point of the fixture — the lowest crystal or bulb — not to the top of the chain, or the fixture ends up lower than planned. Use it to find the right band — then check the width, the chain and the mount before you buy.

Frequently asked questions
What is the standard chandelier height?
30 inches — 76.20 cm. A standard chandelier hangs 30 inches above the dining table — close enough to light the plates and low enough to keep the light out of diners’ eyes.
How do I convert chandelier height from inches to centimetres?
Multiply the inches by 2.54. 30 inches × 2.54 = 76.20 cm. 36 inches × 2.54 = 91.44 cm. 42 inches × 2.54 = 106.68 cm.
What height matches a low chandelier?
24–29 inches above the table. A low chandelier suits an intimate dinner, a low ceiling, or a small dining room — and 29 inches is the tallest low chandelier.
What height matches a high chandelier?
37–42 inches above the table. A high chandelier suits a high ceiling or a large dining room — and 42 inches is the tallest high chandelier.
What height matches no standard chandelier type?
43 inches and above, and below 24 inches. The ranges are closed — 24–29, 30–36 and 37–42 inches — so a height of 43 inches matches no standard type.
Why does 31.49 inches show 79.98 cm when it is below 80.00 cm?
Because the unrounded height is 79.9846 cm. 31.49 inches × 2.54 = 79.9846 cm, which rounds half-up to 79.98 cm — but it is still below the 80.00 cm line. The page prints the unrounded value so the rounding does not mislead you.
Why does 35.44 inches show 90.02 cm when it is above 90.00 cm?
Because the unrounded height is 90.0176 cm. 35.44 inches × 2.54 = 90.0176 cm, which rounds half-up to 90.02 cm — but it is still above the 90.00 cm line. The page prints the unrounded value so the rounding does not mislead you.
Should I measure from the table or the floor?
From the table surface. Measure from the table surface to the LOWEST point of the fixture — the lowest crystal or bulb — not to the top of the chain, or the fixture ends up lower than planned.
