Picture Hanging Height Chart: Low, Standard or High

On the default — 57 inches — the height is 144.78 cm, which matches a standard picture. Put in your own height in inches, and the chart works out the height in centimetres and the picture type it matches. No picture-hanging-height page of any kind exists on the site — the mirror chart (run 437) gives mirror heights, the towel-bar chart (run 439) gives towel BAR heights, the towel-ring chart (run 442) gives towel RING heights, the robe-hook chart (run 443) gives robe HOOK heights, the coat-hook chart (run 440) gives coat HOOK heights, the soap-dispenser chart (run 445) gives soap DISPENSER heights, the toilet-paper-holder chart (run 444) gives toilet paper HOLDER heights, the towel-hook chart (run 447) gives towel HOOK heights, and the picture-frame-size chart gives FRAME sizes, not hanging height. This one is picture hanging height ONLY — how high above the floor to hang a picture, in inches and centimetres.

Picture hanging height chart

Low pictures run 48–54 inches, standard pictures run 56–62 inches, and high pictures run 64–70 inches. Picture hanging height is measured in inches in the US and in centimetres everywhere else — 1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly. The height is the distance from the finished floor to the CENTRE of the picture — not how high the hook sits, and not how tall the frame is. A low picture runs 48–54 inches high (121.92–137.16 cm) and sits above a low console table or in a child’s room, for short walls. A standard picture runs 56–62 inches high (142.24–157.48 cm) — the common picture height is 57 inches (144.78 cm) — and it is the height most people look at without tilting their head up or down: the centre of the picture sits at eye level for a standing viewer. A high picture runs 64–70 inches high (162.56–177.80 cm) and sits above a tall bookcase or on a stairwell landing, for tall walls. The picture hangs best where the centre falls at eye level — hang it too high and the picture floats above the furniture, hang it too low and it crowds the sofa. Heights between the bands — 55, 63, and 71 inches and above — match no standard picture type: too tall for one band, too short for the next. A picture hung above a sofa follows a second rule as well: hang it 6–8 inches above the sofa back, not just 57 inches from the floor — most guidance puts the bottom of the frame 6–8 inches above the sofa back, close enough that the picture and the sofa read as one group. A group of pictures is centred as one picture at 57 inches — measure the whole group, not each frame. When a supplier quotes a height in centimetres, check whether the figure is to the centre or the top of the frame — some list the centre, and some list the top; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.

The picture height in inches — the default is 57.

What is the standard picture hanging height?

On the default — 57 inches — the height is 144.78 cm, which matches a standard picture. Low pictures run 48–54 inches, standard pictures run 56–62 inches, and high pictures run 64–70 inches. The standard picture height is 56–62 inches — about 142.24–157.48 cm — above a low console table, above a sofa, or on a stairwell landing, high enough to see without tilting the head up and low enough to reach without standing on tiptoe. A picture at 48 inches is a low mount above a console table; a picture at 70 inches is the tallest high picture.

Three things about the model are worth stating plainly.

First, 57 inches is 57 × 2.54 = 144.78 cm. Second, 57 inches falls in the 56–62 inch range, so it matches a standard picture. And third, the ranges are CLOSED — 48–54, 56–62 and 64–70 inches — so a height of 55 inches matches no standard type; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.

The worked example, line by line

Setup: 57 inches.

Line 1 — the centimetres. The height is 57 × 2.54 = 144.78 cm.

Line 2 — the picture type. 57 inches falls in the 56–62 inch range, so it matches a standard picture.

Line 3 — the check. 144.78 cm ÷ 2.54 = 57 inches, the height; and a standard picture is 56–62 inches, so 57 inches falls inside the standard range.

With 54 inches, 54 in = 137.16 cm; matches low picture (1 type). With 56 inches, 56 in = 142.24 cm; matches standard picture (1 type). With 60 inches, 60 in = 152.40 cm; matches standard picture (1 type). With 62 inches, 62 in = 157.48 cm; matches standard picture (1 type). With 64 inches, 64 in = 162.56 cm; matches high picture (1 type). With Centimetre bars, 57 in: 144.78 cm — standard picture; 60 in: 152.40 cm — standard picture; 66 in: 167.64 cm — high picture. With Height 0, 0 in = 0.00 cm; matches no standard type. With Height 57, 57 in = 144.78 cm; matches standard picture (1 type). With Height 51.18, 51.18 in = 130.00 cm; matches low picture (1 type) (unrounded 129.9972 cm). With Height 55.12, 55.12 in = 140.00 cm; matches no standard type (unrounded 140.0048 cm). With Height 48, 48 in = 121.92 cm; matches low picture (1 type). With Height 70, 70 in = 177.80 cm; matches high picture (1 type). With Centimetre bars, 57 in: 144.78 cm — standard picture; 60 in: 152.40 cm — standard picture; 66 in: 167.64 cm — high picture.

A note on the rounding: with a height of 51.18 inches the unrounded height is 129.9972 cm, which rounds half-up to 130.00 cm — but it is still below the 130.00 cm line. With a height of 55.12 inches the unrounded height is 140.0048 cm, which rounds half-up to 140.00 cm — but it is above the 140.00 cm line. The page prints the unrounded values so the rounding does not mislead you.

Accuracy & limitations

The math is first-principles: the height in centimetres is the height in inches × 2.54, exactly; the picture type is a closed-range match — low pictures run 48–54 inches, standard pictures run 56–62 inches, and high pictures run 64–70 inches — and the heights between the ranges match no standard type — all rounded to two decimals half-up. The reverses are judged on the UNROUNDED centimetre figure: a neighbour one hundredth of an inch short shows as the target when rounded to two decimals, but its unrounded centimetre figure is below the target, so it does not meet the bar — the page prints the unrounded value in full. Negative heights are floored to zero: a height of −5 inches is treated as 0 inches, because a picture cannot hang below the floor. What the model cannot do is hang your picture: heights are measured from the finished floor to the centre of the picture, in inches and centimetres; a picture hung above a sofa follows a second rule as well — hang it 6–8 inches above the sofa back, not just 57 inches from the floor — most guidance puts the bottom of the frame 6–8 inches above the sofa back, close enough that the picture and the sofa read as one group; a group of pictures is centred as one picture at 57 inches — measure the whole group, not each frame; when a supplier quotes a height in centimetres, check whether the figure is to the centre or the top of the frame — some list the centre, and some list the top. The chart is a guide, not a rule — hang the picture where you can see it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard picture hanging height?

56–62 inches — about 142.24–157.48 cm. The standard picture height is 56–62 inches above the floor, with the centre of the picture at eye level for a standing viewer — the common picture height is 57 inches (144.78 cm).

How high should a picture be above a sofa?

6–8 inches above the sofa back. A 57-inch picture is 144.78 cm high. Hang the picture so the bottom of the frame sits 6–8 inches above the sofa back — close enough that the picture and the sofa read as one group.

What is the lowest picture hanging height?

48 inches. Low pictures run 48–54 inches; a 48-inch picture is 121.92 cm high — above a low console table.

What is the highest picture hanging height?

70 inches. High pictures run 64–70 inches; a 70-inch picture is 177.80 cm high — the tallest high picture.

What height matches no standard picture type?

55 inches, 63 inches, below 48 inches and above 70 inches. The ranges are closed — 48–54, 56–62 and 64–70 inches — so a height of 55 inches matches no standard type.

How do I convert picture height from inches to centimetres?

Multiply the inches by 2.54. 57 inches × 2.54 = 144.78 cm. 48 inches × 2.54 = 121.92 cm. 70 inches × 2.54 = 177.80 cm.

How do I hang a group of pictures?

Centre the whole group as one picture at 57 inches. Measure the group, not each frame — the centre of the group sits at 57 inches (144.78 cm) above the floor.

Why does 51.18 inches show 130.00 cm when it is below 130.00 cm?

Because the unrounded height is 129.9972 cm. 51.18 inches × 2.54 = 129.9972 cm, which rounds half-up to 130.00 cm — but it is still below the 130.00 cm line. The smallest height that is truly at or above 130.00 cm is 51.19 inches (130.0226 cm).
