How tall should a bar stool be?
Bar stool height is measured in inches in the US and in centimetres everywhere else — 1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly. Seat height is measured from the floor to the top of the seat you sit on. The rule for a comfortable bar stool is that the seat sits 10–12 inches below the counter or bar top — that leaves room for your thighs and lets you sit without hunching. A standard kitchen counter is 36 inches high, which is why 24–26 inches is the most common counter stool height. A standard bar is 42 inches high, which is why 28–30 inches is the most common bar stool height. The bar stool types, by seat height: low counter stool 23–24 inches; counter stool 24–26 inches; tall counter stool 26–28 inches; bar stool 28–30 inches; tall bar stool 30–32 inches; extra-tall bar stool 32–34 inches.
Two things about the model are worth stating plainly. First, the height in centimetres is the height in inches times 2.54 — 24 × 2.54 = 60.96 cm. Second, the matching types are every bar stool type whose height range contains your height — at 24 inches that is one type: counter stool; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.

| extra-tall bar stool | 34.00 in | 86.36 cm | 46 in bars |
Every height in the chart matches exactly one bar stool type. The shortest standard height is the 23-inch low counter stool at 58.42 cm, and the tallest is the 34-inch extra-tall bar stool at 86.36 cm.
The worked example, line by line
Setup: 24-inch height.
Line 1 — the height in centimetres. The height in centimetres is 24 × 2.54 = 60.96 cm.
Line 2 — the matching types. The bar stool types whose height range contains 24 inches are counter stool — one type.
Line 3 — the switch from a counter stool to a bar stool. Switching from a 24-inch counter stool to a 28-inch bar stool adds 4 inches — 10.16 cm.
Line 4 — the check. 24 × 2.54 = 60.96 cm, the height; and 28 − 24 = 4 inches, the extra height.

The reverses, worked backwards
Smallest height (to the hundredth) for the centimetre figure to reach 60.00 cm: At the displayed 23.63 in the figures are Height 23.63 in; 60.02 cm (unrounded 60.0202 cm); matching types: low counter stool. At the displayed 23.63 in the height is 60.02 cm (unrounded 60.0202 cm). At 23.62 in the figure is 59.99 cm (unrounded 59.9948 cm) — below 60.00 cm — so 23.63 in is the smallest height (to the hundredth) for the centimetre figure to reach 60.00 cm.
Largest height (to the hundredth) for the centimetre figure to STAY at or below 76.00 cm: At the displayed 29.92 in the figures are Height 29.92 in; 76.00 cm (unrounded 75.9968 cm); matching types: bar stool. At the displayed 29.92 in the height is 76.00 cm (unrounded 75.9968 cm). At 29.93 in the figure is 76.02 cm (unrounded 76.0222 cm) — above 76.00 cm — so 29.92 in is the largest height (to the hundredth) for the centimetre figure to stay at or below 76.00 cm.
Smallest height (to the hundredth) to match a counter stool: At the displayed 24.00 in the figures are Height 24 in; 60.96 cm; matching types: counter stool. At the displayed 24.00 in the height is 60.96 cm and it matches a counter stool. At 23.99 in the figure is 60.93 cm (unrounded 60.9346 cm) and it does not match a counter stool — it still matches a low counter stool — so 24.00 in is the smallest height (to the hundredth) to match a counter stool.
Smallest height (to the hundredth) for the centimetre figure to reach 81.00 cm: At the displayed 31.89 in the figures are Height 31.89 in; 81.00 cm (unrounded 81.0006 cm); matching types: tall bar stool. At the displayed 31.89 in the height is 81.00 cm (unrounded 81.0006 cm). At 31.88 in the figure is 80.98 cm (unrounded 80.9752 cm) — below 81.00 cm — so 31.89 in is the smallest height (to the hundredth) for the centimetre figure to reach 81.00 cm.
Largest height (to the hundredth) for the centimetre figure to STAY at or below 66.00 cm: At the displayed 25.98 in the figures are Height 25.98 in; 65.99 cm (unrounded 65.9892 cm); matching types: counter stool. At the displayed 25.98 in the height is 65.99 cm (unrounded 65.9892 cm). At 25.99 in the figure is 66.01 cm (unrounded 66.0146 cm) — above 66.00 cm — so 25.98 in is the largest height (to the hundredth) for the centimetre figure to stay at or below 66.00 cm.
Smallest height (to the hundredth) to match an extra-tall bar stool: At the displayed 32.00 in the figures are Height 32 in; 81.28 cm; matching types: extra-tall bar stool. At the displayed 32.00 in the height is 81.28 cm and it matches an extra-tall bar stool. At 31.99 in the figure is 81.25 cm (unrounded 81.2546 cm) and it does not match an extra-tall bar stool — it still matches a tall bar stool — so 32.00 in is the smallest height (to the hundredth) to match an extra-tall bar stool.

Who uses this
- The homeowner buying a counter stool: they learn a 24-inch stool is 60.96 cm and matches counter stool — and they check the 24.00 in reverse to see the smallest height that matches a counter stool.
- The homeowner fitting an extra-tall bar stool: they learn a 32-inch stool is 81.28 cm and matches extra-tall bar stool — and they check the 32.00 in reverse to see the smallest height that matches an extra-tall bar stool.
- The homeowner with a 23-inch stool: they learn it is 58.42 cm and matches low counter stool — and they check the 23.63 in reverse to see the smallest height for the centimetre figure to reach 60.00 cm.
- The homeowner with a 29.92-inch measurement: they learn it is 76.00 cm — the unrounded figure is 75.9968 cm — and it matches bar stool, so they check the 29.92 in reverse to see the largest height for the centimetre figure to stay at or below 76.00 cm.
Accuracy & limitations
The math is first-principles: the height in centimetres is the height in inches times 2.54, rounded to two decimals half-up; the matching types are the bar stool types whose height range contains your height; the height in inches is floored at 0 — a negative height input shows 0.00 cm and no matching type, never a negative number. The reverses are judged on the UNROUNDED centimetre figure: at 23.63 in the height is 60.0202 cm unrounded, which rounds to 60.02 cm, so it reaches the 60.00 cm target; at 23.62 in the height is 59.9948 cm unrounded, which rounds to 59.99 cm, so it does not. What the model cannot do is set your stool height: the heights in the table are the standard figures, not a rule for every kitchen — when a supplier quotes a height in centimetres, check whether it includes any footrest or cushion — some list the frame only, and a thick cushion adds several centimetres; a stool that is too tall crowds your knees against the counter and leaves your feet dangling; a stool that is too short means hunching over the counter to eat or work; and a 34-inch extra-tall stool beside a 36-inch counter leaves only 2 inches of legroom and is unusable. Allow about 24 inches of width per stool along the counter so elbows do not collide. The rule for a comfortable bar stool is that the seat sits 10–12 inches below the counter or bar top. Measure from the floor to the top of the seat you sit on — not from the top of the counter — and remember the stool height depends on the counter or bar it sits beside. Use it to find the centimetre figure and the matching stool types for your height — then measure twice before you buy.

Frequently asked questions
How tall is a standard counter stool?
24 inches. A standard counter stool is 24 inches tall — 60.96 cm — and matches counter stool. A 23-inch stool is 58.42 cm and a 32-inch stool is 81.28 cm.
How do I measure bar stool height?
Measure from the floor to the top of the seat. Seat height is measured from the floor to the top of the seat you sit on.
How do I convert inches to centimetres?
Multiply by 2.54. One inch is exactly 2.54 centimetres, so 24 inches is 60.96 cm, 23 inches is 58.42 cm and 32 inches is 81.28 cm.
What height is a low counter stool?
23–24 inches. Low counter stools are 23–24 inches tall (58.42–60.96 cm). At 23 inches the height is 58.42 cm and it matches low counter stool only.
What height is an extra-tall bar stool?
32–34 inches. Extra-tall bar stools are 32–34 inches tall (81.28–86.36 cm). At 32 inches the height is 81.28 cm and it matches extra-tall bar stool only.
Why does 29.92 inches show 76.00 cm?
It rounds to 76.00 cm. At 29.92 inches the unrounded centimetre figure is 75.9968 cm, which rounds half-up to 76.00 cm — the page prints the unrounded 75.9968 cm so the rounding does not mislead you. It matches bar stool.
Why does 23.62 inches show 59.99 cm?
It rounds to 59.99 cm. At 23.62 inches the unrounded centimetre figure is 59.9948 cm, which rounds half-up to 59.99 cm — the page prints the unrounded 59.9948 cm so the rounding does not mislead you. It matches low counter stool.
What if my height matches no bar stool type?
It falls outside the standard ranges. A 0-inch height is 0.00 cm and matches nothing, because it is shorter than the shortest standard bar stool type. A height above 34 inches matches nothing either, because it is taller than the tallest standard bar stool type.
