How tall should a coffee table be?
Coffee table height is measured in inches in the US and in centimetres everywhere else — 1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly. Total coffee table height is measured from the floor to the top surface you set a cup on. The rule for a comfortable coffee table is that its top sits level with the sofa seat, or 1–2 inches below it — a typical sofa seat is about 17–19 inches from the floor, which is why 16–18 inches is the most common standard coffee table height. Coffee tables are sold in standard heights: 14–16 inches is the low-profile table for low modern sofas, 16–18 inches is the standard coffee table, and 18.5–19.5 inches is the tall or lift-top table whose top rises to laptop height. The coffee table types, by height: low-profile modern 14–16 inches; standard coffee table 16–18 inches; tall coffee table 18.5–19 inches; lift-top coffee table 19.5 inches.
Two things about the model are worth stating plainly. First, the height in centimetres is the height in inches times 2.54 — 17 × 2.54 = 43.18 cm. Second, the matching types are every coffee table type whose height range contains your height — at 17 inches that is one type: standard coffee table; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.
The coffee table height chart
| Coffee table type | Height (in) | Height (cm) |
| low-profile modern | 14.00 in | 35.56 cm |
| low-profile modern | 14.50 in | 36.83 cm |
| low-profile modern; Japanese-style low table | 15.00 in | 38.10 cm |
| low-profile modern | 15.50 in | 39.37 cm |
| standard coffee table | 16.00 in | 40.64 cm |
| standard coffee table | 16.50 in | 41.91 cm |
| standard coffee table | 17.00 in | 43.18 cm |
| standard coffee table | 17.50 in | 44.45 cm |
| standard coffee table; sofa-height | 18.00 in | 45.72 cm |
| tall coffee table | 18.50 in | 46.99 cm |
| tall coffee table | 19.00 in | 48.26 cm |
| lift-top coffee table | 19.50 in | 49.53 cm |
Two heights appear more than once in the chart — 15 inches is shared by low-profile modern and Japanese-style low table, and 18 inches is shared by standard coffee table and sofa-height. The shortest standard height is the 14-inch low-profile modern at 35.56 cm, and the longest is the 19.5-inch lift-top coffee table at 49.53 cm.
The worked example, line by line
Setup: 17-inch height.
Line 1 — the height in centimetres. The height in centimetres is 17 × 2.54 = 43.18 cm.
Line 2 — the matching types. The coffee table types whose height range contains 17 inches are standard coffee table — one type.
Line 3 — the switch from a standard coffee table to a lift-top coffee table. Switching from a 17-inch standard coffee table to a 19.5-inch lift-top coffee table adds 2.5 inches — 6.35 cm.
Line 4 — the check. 17 × 2.54 = 43.18 cm, the height; and 19.5 − 17 = 2.5 inches, the extra height.

The reverses, worked backwards
Smallest height (to the hundredth) for the centimetre figure to reach 40.00 cm: At the displayed 15.75 in the figures are Height 15.75 in; 40.01 cm (unrounded 40.0050 cm); matching types: low-profile modern. At the displayed 15.75 in the height is 40.01 cm (unrounded 40.005 cm). At 15.74 in the figure is 39.98 cm (unrounded 39.9796 cm) — below 40.00 cm — so 15.75 in is the smallest height (to the hundredth) for the centimetre figure to reach 40.00 cm.
Largest height (to the hundredth) for the centimetre figure to STAY at or below 45.00 cm: At the displayed 17.71 in the figures are Height 17.71 in; 44.98 cm (unrounded 44.9834 cm); matching types: standard coffee table. At the displayed 17.71 in the height is 44.98 cm (unrounded 44.9834 cm). At 17.72 in the figure is 45.01 cm (unrounded 45.0088 cm) — above 45.00 cm, though it displays as 45.01 cm — so 17.71 in is the largest height (to the hundredth) for the centimetre figure to stay at or below 45.00 cm.
Smallest height (to the hundredth) to match a standard coffee table: At the displayed 16.00 in the figures are Height 16 in; 40.64 cm; matching types: standard coffee table. At the displayed 16.00 in the height is 40.64 cm and it matches a standard coffee table. At 15.99 in the figure is 40.61 cm (unrounded 40.6146 cm) and it does not match a standard coffee table — it still matches low-profile modern — so 16.00 in is the smallest height (to the hundredth) to match a standard coffee table.
Smallest height (to the hundredth) for the centimetre figure to reach 48.00 cm: At the displayed 18.90 in the figures are Height 18.90 in; 48.01 cm (unrounded 48.0060 cm); matching types: tall coffee table. At the displayed 18.90 in the height is 48.01 cm (unrounded 48.006 cm). At 18.89 in the figure is 47.98 cm (unrounded 47.9806 cm) — below 48.00 cm — so 18.90 in is the smallest height (to the hundredth) for the centimetre figure to reach 48.00 cm.
Largest height (to the hundredth) for the centimetre figure to STAY at or below 42.00 cm: At the displayed 16.53 in the figures are Height 16.53 in; 41.99 cm (unrounded 41.9862 cm); matching types: standard coffee table. At the displayed 16.53 in the height is 41.99 cm (unrounded 41.9862 cm). At 16.54 in the figure is 42.01 cm (unrounded 42.0116 cm) — above 42.00 cm — so 16.53 in is the largest height (to the hundredth) for the centimetre figure to stay at or below 42.00 cm.
Smallest height (to the hundredth) to match a lift-top coffee table: At the displayed 19.50 in the figures are Height 19.50 in; 49.53 cm; matching types: lift-top coffee table. At the displayed 19.50 in the height is 49.53 cm and it matches a lift-top coffee table. At 19.49 in the figure is 49.50 cm (unrounded 49.5046 cm) and it does not match a lift-top coffee table — it still matches tall coffee table — so 19.50 in is the smallest height (to the hundredth) to match a lift-top coffee table.

Who uses this
- The homeowner buying a standard coffee table: they learn a 17-inch coffee table is 43.18 cm and matches standard coffee table — and they check the 16.00 in reverse to see the smallest height that matches a standard coffee table.
- The homeowner fitting a lift-top coffee table: they learn a 19.5-inch coffee table is 49.53 cm and matches lift-top coffee table — and they check the 19.50 in reverse to see the smallest height that matches a lift-top coffee table.
- The homeowner with a 15-inch coffee table: they learn it is 38.10 cm and matches low-profile modern and Japanese-style low table — and they check the 15.75 in reverse to see the smallest height for the centimetre figure to reach 40.00 cm.
- The homeowner with a 17.72-inch measurement: they learn it is 45.01 cm — the unrounded figure is 45.0088 cm — and it matches standard coffee table, so they check the 17.71 in reverse to see the largest height for the centimetre figure to stay at or below 45.00 cm.
Accuracy & limitations
The math is first-principles: the height in centimetres is the height in inches times 2.54, rounded to two decimals half-up; the matching types are the coffee table types whose height range contains your height; the height in inches is floored at 0 — a negative height input shows 0.00 cm and no matching type, never a negative number. The reverses are judged on the UNROUNDED centimetre figure: at 15.75 in the height is 40.005 cm unrounded, which rounds to 40.01 cm, so it reaches the 40.00 cm target; at 15.74 in the height is 39.9796 cm unrounded, which rounds to 39.98 cm, so it does not. What the model cannot do is set your coffee table height: the heights in the table are the standard figures, not a rule for every living room — when a supplier quotes a height in centimetres, check whether it includes any casters or feet — some list the body only, and feet add several centimetres; a coffee table that is too tall blocks you reaching across it and crowds your knees when you sit; a coffee table that is too low means bending down for your drink every time; and a 19.5-inch lift-top beside a low sofa looks out of place and the raised top sits too high to eat from comfortably. The rule for a comfortable coffee table is that its top sits level with the sofa seat, or 1–2 inches below it — a typical sofa seat is about 17–19 inches from the floor. Measure from the floor to the top surface you set a cup on — not from the top of the sofa cushion — and remember the coffee table height depends on the sofa it sits beside. Use it to find the centimetre figure and the matching coffee table types for your height — then measure twice before you buy.

Method: Centimetres = inches × 2.54; a coffee table type matches your height when your height falls inside that type’s height range (ranges in inches); where two ranges meet, the boundary height belongs to the taller type — 16 inches is a standard coffee table, and 19.5 inches is a lift-top coffee table; the height in inches is floored at 0 — a negative height input shows 0.00 cm and no matching type, never a negative number. Frequently asked questions
How tall is a standard coffee table?
17 inches. A standard coffee table is 17 inches tall — 43.18 cm — and matches standard coffee table. A 14-inch coffee table is 35.56 cm and a 19.5-inch coffee table is 49.53 cm.
How do I measure coffee table height?
Measure from the floor to the top surface. Total coffee table height is measured from the floor to the top surface you set a cup on.
How do I convert inches to centimetres?
Multiply by 2.54. One inch is exactly 2.54 centimetres, so 17 inches is 43.18 cm, 14 inches is 35.56 cm and 19.5 inches is 49.53 cm.
What height is a low-profile coffee table?
14–16 inches. Low-profile modern coffee tables are 14–16 inches tall (35.56–40.64 cm). At 14 inches the height is 35.56 cm and it matches low-profile modern only.
What height is a lift-top coffee table?
19.5 inches. Lift-top coffee tables are 19.5 inches tall (49.53 cm). At 19.5 inches the height is 49.53 cm and it matches lift-top coffee table only.
Why does 17.72 inches show 45.01 cm?
It rounds to 45.01 cm. At 17.72 inches the unrounded centimetre figure is 45.0088 cm, which rounds half-up to 45.01 cm — the page prints the unrounded 45.0088 cm so the rounding does not mislead you. It matches standard coffee table.
Why does 19.49 inches show 49.50 cm?
It rounds to 49.50 cm. At 19.49 inches the unrounded centimetre figure is 49.5046 cm, which rounds half-up to 49.50 cm — the page prints the unrounded 49.5046 cm so the rounding does not mislead you. It matches tall coffee table, not lift-top coffee table.
What if my height matches no coffee table type?
It falls outside the standard ranges. A 0-inch height is 0.00 cm and matches nothing, because it is shorter than the shortest standard coffee table type. A height above 19.5 inches matches nothing either, because it is taller than the tallest standard coffee table type.
