How tall should a nightstand be?
Nightstand height is measured in inches in the US and in centimetres everywhere else — 1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly. Total nightstand height is measured from the floor to the top surface the lamp sits on. The rule for a comfortable nightstand is that its top sits level with the top of the mattress, or within about 2 inches of it — a typical mattress top is about 25 inches from the floor, which is why 24 inches is the most common standard nightstand height. Nightstands are sold in standard heights: 24–28 inches is the standard nightstand, 22–24 inches is the low nightstand for low platform beds, and 28–33 inches is the tall nightstand for tall beds. The nightstand types, by height: low nightstand 22–24 inches; standard nightstand 24–28 inches; tall nightstand 28–33 inches.
Two things about the model are worth stating plainly. First, the height in centimetres is the height in inches times 2.54 — 24 × 2.54 = 60.96 cm. Second, the matching types are every nightstand type whose height range contains your height — at 24 inches that is two types: low nightstand, standard nightstand; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.
The nightstand height chart
| Nightstand type | Height (in) | Height (cm) |
| low nightstand | 22.00 in | 55.88 cm |
| low nightstand | 23.00 in | 58.42 cm |
| low nightstand; standard nightstand | 24.00 in | 60.96 cm |
| standard nightstand | 25.00 in | 63.50 cm |
| standard nightstand | 26.00 in | 66.04 cm |
| standard nightstand | 27.00 in | 68.58 cm |
| standard nightstand; tall nightstand | 28.00 in | 71.12 cm |
| tall nightstand | 29.00 in | 73.66 cm |
| tall nightstand | 30.00 in | 76.20 cm |
| tall nightstand | 31.00 in | 78.74 cm |
| tall nightstand | 32.00 in | 81.28 cm |
| tall nightstand | 33.00 in | 83.82 cm |
Two heights appear more than once in the chart — 24 inches is shared by low nightstand and standard nightstand, and 28 inches is shared by standard nightstand and tall nightstand. The shortest standard height is the 22-inch low nightstand at 55.88 cm, and the longest is the 33-inch tall nightstand at 83.82 cm.
The worked example, line by line
Setup: 24-inch height.
Line 1 — the height in centimetres. The height in centimetres is 24 × 2.54 = 60.96 cm.
Line 2 — the matching types. The nightstand types whose height range contains 24 inches are low nightstand, standard nightstand — two types.
Line 3 — the switch from a standard nightstand to a tall nightstand. Switching from a 24-inch standard nightstand to a 33-inch tall nightstand adds 9 inches — 22.86 cm.
Line 4 — the check. 24 × 2.54 = 60.96 cm, the height; and 33 − 24 = 9 inches, the extra height.

The reverses, worked backwards
Smallest height (to the hundredth) for the centimetre figure to reach 60.00 cm: At the displayed 23.63 in the figures are Height 23.63 in; 60.02 cm (unrounded 60.0202 cm); matching types: low nightstand. At the displayed 23.63 in the height is 60.02 cm (unrounded 60.0202 cm). At 23.62 in the figure is 59.99 cm — below 60.00 cm — so 23.63 in is the smallest height (to the hundredth) for the centimetre figure to reach 60.00 cm.
Largest height (to the hundredth) for the centimetre figure to STAY at or below 70.00 cm: At the displayed 27.55 in the figures are Height 27.55 in; 69.98 cm (unrounded 69.9770 cm); matching types: standard nightstand. At the displayed 27.55 in the height is 69.98 cm (unrounded 69.9770 cm). At 27.56 in the figure is 70.00 cm (unrounded 70.0024 cm) — above 70.00 cm, though it displays as 70.00 cm — so 27.55 in is the largest height (to the hundredth) for the centimetre figure to stay at or below 70.00 cm.
Smallest height (to the hundredth) for the centimetre figure to reach 80.00 cm: At the displayed 31.50 in the figures are Height 31.50 in; 80.01 cm; matching types: tall nightstand. At the displayed 31.50 in the height is 80.01 cm (unrounded 80.0100 cm). At 31.49 in the figure is 79.98 cm — below 80.00 cm — so 31.50 in is the smallest height (to the hundredth) for the centimetre figure to reach 80.00 cm.
Smallest height (to the hundredth) to match standard nightstand: At the displayed 24.00 in the figures are Height 24 in; 60.96 cm; matching types: low nightstand, standard nightstand. At the displayed 24.00 in the height is 60.96 cm and it matches standard nightstand. At 23.99 in the figure is 60.93 cm and it does not match standard nightstand — it still matches low nightstand — so 24.00 in is the smallest height (to the hundredth) to match standard nightstand.
Largest height (to the hundredth) to still match standard nightstand: At the displayed 28.00 in the figures are Height 28 in; 71.12 cm; matching types: standard nightstand, tall nightstand. At the displayed 28.00 in the height is 71.12 cm and it matches standard nightstand. At 28.01 in the figure is 71.15 cm and it no longer matches standard nightstand — it still matches tall nightstand — so 28.00 in is the largest height (to the hundredth) to still match standard nightstand.
Smallest height (to the hundredth) to match tall nightstand: At the displayed 28.00 in the figures are Height 28 in; 71.12 cm; matching types: standard nightstand, tall nightstand. At the displayed 28.00 in the height is 71.12 cm and it matches tall nightstand. At 27.99 in the figure is 71.09 cm and it does not match tall nightstand — it still matches standard nightstand — so 28.00 in is the smallest height (to the hundredth) to match tall nightstand.

Who uses this
- The homeowner buying a standard nightstand: they learn a 24-inch nightstand is 60.96 cm and matches low nightstand, standard nightstand — and they check the 24.00 in reverse to see the smallest height that matches standard nightstand.
- The homeowner fitting a tall nightstand: they learn a 32-inch nightstand is 81.28 cm and matches tall nightstand — and they check the 28.00 in reverse to see the smallest height that matches tall nightstand.
- The homeowner with a 26-inch nightstand: they learn it is 66.04 cm and matches standard nightstand — and they check the 28.00 in reverse to see the largest height that still matches standard nightstand.
- The homeowner with a 25.59-inch measurement: they learn it is 65.00 cm — the unrounded figure is 64.9986 cm — and it matches standard nightstand, so they check the 23.63 in reverse to see the smallest height for the centimetre figure to reach 60.00 cm.
Accuracy & limitations
The math is first-principles: the height in centimetres is the height in inches times 2.54, rounded to two decimals half-up; the matching types are the nightstand types whose height range contains your height; the height in inches is floored at 0 — a negative height input shows 0.00 cm and no matching type, never a negative number. The reverses are judged on the UNROUNDED centimetre figure: at 23.63 in the height is 60.0202 cm unrounded, which rounds to 60.02 cm, so it reaches the 60.00 cm target; at 23.62 in the height is 59.9948 cm unrounded, which rounds to 59.99 cm, so it does not. What the model cannot do is set your nightstand height: the heights in the table are the standard figures, not a rule for every bedroom — when a supplier quotes a height in centimetres, check whether it includes any feet or casters — some list the body only, and feet add several centimetres; a nightstand that is too tall blocks you reaching the lamp switch and looks top-heavy beside a low bed; a nightstand that is too short means reaching down for your phone, glasses and water in the dark; and a 33-inch nightstand beside a low platform bed looks out of place and the drawer pulls sit too high to reach lying down. The rule for a comfortable nightstand is that its top sits level with the top of the mattress, or within about 2 inches of it — a typical mattress top is about 25 inches from the floor. Measure from the floor to the top surface the lamp sits on — not from the top of the mattress — and remember the nightstand height depends on the bed it sits beside. Use it to find the centimetre figure and the matching nightstand types for your height — then measure twice before you buy.

Frequently asked questions
How tall is a standard nightstand?
24 inches. A standard nightstand is 24 inches tall — 60.96 cm — and matches low nightstand, standard nightstand. A 22-inch nightstand is 55.88 cm and a 32-inch nightstand is 81.28 cm.
How do I measure nightstand height?
Measure from the floor to the top surface. Total nightstand height is measured from the floor to the top surface the lamp sits on.
How do I convert inches to centimetres?
Multiply by 2.54. One inch is exactly 2.54 centimetres, so 24 inches is 60.96 cm, 22 inches is 55.88 cm and 32 inches is 81.28 cm.
What height is a low nightstand?
22–24 inches. Low nightstands are 22–24 inches tall (55.88–60.96 cm). At 22 inches the height is 55.88 cm and it matches low nightstand only.
What height is a tall nightstand?
28–33 inches. Tall nightstands are 28–33 inches tall (71.12–83.82 cm). At 28 inches the height is 71.12 cm and it matches standard nightstand and tall nightstand.
Why does 23.63 inches show 60.02 cm?
It rounds to 60.02 cm. At 23.63 inches the unrounded centimetre figure is 60.0202 cm, which rounds half-up to 60.02 cm — the page prints the unrounded 60.0202 cm so the rounding does not mislead you. It matches low nightstand.
Why does 25.59 inches show 65.00 cm?
It rounds to 65.00 cm. At 25.59 inches the unrounded centimetre figure is 64.9986 cm, which rounds half-up to 65.00 cm — the page prints the unrounded 64.9986 cm so the rounding does not mislead you. It matches standard nightstand.
What if my height matches no nightstand type?
It falls outside the standard ranges. A 0-inch height is 0.00 cm and matches nothing, because it is shorter than the shortest standard nightstand type. A height above 33 inches matches nothing either, because it is taller than the tallest standard nightstand type.
