How tall should a TV stand be?

TV stand height is measured in inches in the US and in centimetres everywhere else — 1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly. The rule for a comfortable screen is that the centre of the TV sits at eye level when you are seated — about 42 inches from the floor for a typical sofa — so the stand height depends on your TV size and your seating: a big screen needs a low stand, a small screen needs a taller one. Stands are sold in standard heights: 24 inches (2 feet) is the most common standard TV stand height, 14–18 inches is the low-profile console for large screens, and 30–36 inches is the tall entertainment centre, with 40 inches for armoires and tall cabinets. The math is first-principles: the height in centimetres is the height in inches times 2.54, rounded to two decimals half-up; the matching types are the stand types whose height range contains your height; the height in inches is floored at 0 — a negative height input shows 0.00 cm and no matching type, never a negative number. The reverses are judged on the UNROUNDED centimetre figure: at 39.37 in the height is 99.9998 cm unrounded, which rounds to 100.00 cm, so it reaches the 100.00 cm target; at 39.36 in the height is 99.9744 cm unrounded, which rounds to 99.97 cm, so it does not.
