What Percent Calculator — frequently asked questions

How do you find what percent one number is of another?

Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. If 30 of 200 people responded, that is (30 ÷ 200) × 100 = 15%.

What if the part is bigger than the whole?

The percentage will exceed 100%, which is perfectly valid — it means the part is larger than the reference value, as with 120% of a sales target.

What is the difference between this and percentage change?

This compares a part to its whole at one moment. Percentage change compares a value to its own earlier value over time.

How do I convert the result to a decimal?

Divide the percentage by 100. So 85% becomes 0.85 — useful when the next step of your math needs decimal form.

Why does my answer show many decimal places?

Some divisions do not come out even, like 1 ÷ 3 = 33.333…%. The calculator rounds for readability; the underlying math keeps full precision.
