A $85 pair of shoes is 30% off. Multiply 85 by 0.70 to get a $59.50 sale price. You save $25.50.
Multiply the price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). For 25% off $80: 80 × 0.75 = $60. The savings are $20.
Apply them one after another, not added together. A 30% clearance plus a 20% coupon means paying 70% then 80% of that: 0.70 × 0.80 = 56% of the original — a 44% total discount, not 50%.
A discount lowers the price you pay now. A rebate returns part of the money later, after purchase — so the upfront cost is higher.
Usually the discount comes off first and sales tax applies to the reduced price — which saves you a little extra. Store policies can vary.
Find 10% (move the decimal one place), halve it for 5%, and add them together. For $60: $6 + $3 = $9 off.
