Percentage Calculator — frequently asked questions

How do you calculate a percentage of a number by hand?

Divide the percentage by 100 to turn it into a decimal, then multiply by the number. For 30% of 90: 0.30 × 90 = 27.

What does "percent" literally mean?

It comes from the Latin "per centum," meaning "per hundred." So 45% is simply 45 out of every 100.

How do I find 10% of a number quickly?

Move the decimal point one place to the left: 10% of 240 is 24. From there you can build 20%, 5%, or 15% with simple addition and halving.

Can a percentage be more than 100%?

Yes. Percentages above 100% just mean "more than the whole" — 150% of 40 is 60. This comes up with growth figures and markups.

Why do stores show the percentage off instead of the final price?

A percentage frames the deal relative to the original price, which makes the saving feel concrete. This calculator lets you verify the actual final price yourself.
