Uber vs Lyft — monthly rideshare cost

Uber costs its fare times its surge, Lyft costs its fare times its surge, and each membership takes a discount off the rides and adds a monthly fee. This calculator prices all four ways to ride on your month, and shows which one costs least — and the break-even rides and surges. Comparison #208 in the comparisons library.

No surge on either side: Uber $216.00, Uber One $204.39, Lyft $216.00, Lyft Pink $203.59 — lyft Pink wins by $0.80.

The flip: at the defaults Lyft Pink wins by $15.65. Uber One wins when Uber’s surge drops to 1.0x, or when Lyft’s surge rises to 1.4x. Lyft without a membership wins when you ride only 4 times a month, or when the base fare is $10.00 — at $10.00 Lyft wins by $0.19, because Pink’s $19.99 fee is more than the 15% it saves.

Reverse: Uber One pays for itself at 4.6250 rides a month (exact 4.6250), so 5 rides a month; Lyft Pink pays for itself at 6.7306 rides a month (exact 6.7306), so 7 rides a month; Lyft Pink ties Uber One at a Lyft surge of 1.2161x (exact 1.2161), so 1.22x to the cent; and there is no break-even base fare where Uber without a membership beats Lyft without a membership — at 1.2x against 1.1x Uber is always 9.09% more expensive.

How Uber vs Lyft is really compared

The two rideshares are priced on the same month: the same number of rides, the same base fare, and each side’s own surge. Uber without a membership is the rides times the base fare times Uber’s surge. Uber One is the same, with 10% off the rides, plus the $9.99 monthly fee. Lyft without a membership is the rides times the base fare times Lyft’s surge. Lyft Pink is the same, with 15% off the rides, plus the $19.99 monthly fee. The winner is whichever of the four monthly totals is lowest, and the difference is the gap to the runner-up. Surge multipliers are averages the rider estimates from their own recent rides — check the app before ordering. Membership fees and discounts are defaults you can edit: Uber One and Lyft Pink prices and perks change, so check the current terms in the app. Tips, tolls, wait time and availability are not in the model.

At the defaults — 12 rides a month, base fare $18.00, Uber surge 1.2x, Lyft surge 1.1x, Uber One $9.99 for 10% off, Lyft Pink $19.99 for 15% off — Uber is 12 × $18.00 × 1.2 = $259.20. Uber One is $259.20 × 0.90 + $9.99 = $243.27. Lyft is 12 × $18.00 × 1.1 = $237.60. Lyft Pink is $237.60 × 0.85 + $19.99 = $221.95. Lyft Pink wins by $15.65 over Lyft without a membership ($221.95 against $237.60) and by $21.32 over Uber One.

The worked example, line by line

Setup: 12 rides a month, base fare $18.00, Uber surge 1.2x, Lyft surge 1.1x, Uber One $9.99 for 10% off, Lyft Pink $19.99 for 15% off.

Line 1 — Uber without a membership. 12 × $18.00 × 1.2 = $259.20.

Line 2 — Uber One. $259.20 × 0.90 + $9.99 = $243.27. The 10% discount saves $25.93, and the fee takes $9.99 of it back.

Line 3 — Lyft without a membership. 12 × $18.00 × 1.1 = $237.60.

Line 4 — Lyft Pink. $237.60 × 0.85 + $19.99 = $221.95. The 15% discount saves $35.64, and the fee takes $19.99 of it back.

Line 5 — the winner. The lowest of the four is Lyft Pink at $221.95. The runner-up is Lyft without a membership at $237.60, so Lyft Pink wins by $15.65. Uber One is $21.32 behind.

Reverse: Uber One pays for itself at 4.625 rides a month (exact 4.6250), so 5 rides a month — at 5 rides Uber One is $107.19 against $108.00 without, saving $0.81, and at 4 rides it is $87.75 against $86.40, losing $1.35. Lyft Pink pays for itself at 6.7306 rides a month (exact 6.7306), so 7 rides a month — at 7 rides Lyft Pink is $137.80 against $138.60 without, saving $0.80, and at 6 rides it is $120.97 against $118.80, losing $2.17. Lyft Pink ties Uber One at a Lyft surge of 1.2161x (exact 1.2161), so 1.22x to the cent — at 1.22x Lyft Pink is $243.98 against Uber One’s $243.27, losing by $0.71. And there is no break-even base fare where Uber without a membership beats Lyft without a membership — at 1.2x against 1.1x Uber is always 9.09% more expensive.

Every branch, checked

Uber surge 1.0x: Uber falls to $216.00 and Uber One to $204.39, while Lyft stays at $237.60 and Lyft Pink at $221.95 — Uber One wins by $11.61 over Uber, and by $17.56 over Lyft Pink. This is the flip: when Uber stops surging, its membership is the cheapest way to ride.

Lyft surge 1.4x: Lyft rises to $302.40 and Lyft Pink to $277.03, while Uber stays at $259.20 and Uber One at $243.27 — Uber One wins by $15.93 over Uber, and by $33.76 over Lyft Pink. This is the flip: when Lyft surges hard, even its 15% discount cannot save it.

4 rides/month: Uber is $86.40, Uber One is $87.75, Lyft is $79.20 and Lyft Pink is $87.31 — Lyft without a membership wins at $79.20, $7.20 ahead of Uber. This is the flip: at 4 rides neither membership pays — the fees are more than the discounts save.

30 rides/month: Uber is $648.00, Uber One is $593.19, Lyft is $594.00 and Lyft Pink is $524.89 — Lyft Pink wins by $68.30. At 30 rides the 15% discount is worth $89.10 a month, and the $19.99 fee is a small price for it.

Base fare $30.00: Uber is $432.00, Uber One is $398.79, Lyft is $396.00 and Lyft Pink is $356.59 — Lyft Pink wins by $39.41 over Lyft, and by $42.20 over Uber One. Dear fares make the discounts bigger in dollars, and the bigger discount wins.

Base fare $10.00: Uber is $144.00, Uber One is $139.59, Lyft is $132.00 and Lyft Pink is $132.19 — Lyft without a membership wins by $0.19. This is the flip: at $10.00 a ride, Pink’s 15% saves only $19.80, and the $19.99 fee eats it all and 19 cents more.

No surge on either side: Uber is $216.00, Uber One is $204.39, Lyft is $216.00 and Lyft Pink is $203.59 — Lyft Pink wins by $0.80. Without surge the two sides tie at $216.00, and the memberships decide it: Pink’s bigger discount beats One’s smaller fee by 80 cents.

Reverse — the lines that matter: Uber One pays for itself at 5 rides a month; Lyft Pink pays for itself at 7 rides a month; Lyft Pink ties Uber One at a 1.22x Lyft surge; and there is no break-even base fare — Uber is always 9.09% more expensive at these surges.

The flip: at the defaults Lyft Pink wins by $15.65. Uber One wins when Uber’s surge drops to 1.0x, or when Lyft’s surge rises to 1.4x. Lyft without a membership wins when you ride only 4 times a month, or when the base fare is $10.00.

What the defaults assume

The model assumes the rides, base fare, surges, fees and discounts you enter, and the same pattern every ride of the month. It assumes the surge multipliers are your own averages from your recent rides — check them, because the surge is what decides the winner, and it changes by the hour. It assumes the membership fees and discounts are the defaults — check the current terms in the app, because Uber One and Lyft Pink prices and perks change. It leaves out tips, tolls, wait time and availability. Rounding convention: money is rounded to cents, the break-even rides and surge to two decimals with the exact value to four, and all figures are computed from unrounded values, rounded only for display.

Who uses this

  • The daily commuter choosing a membership: they learn Lyft Pink wins by $15.65 at their numbers — so they know which membership to buy, and they check the 5-ride and 7-ride break-evens before paying for both.
  • The occasional rider wondering about a membership: they learn 4 rides a month makes Lyft without a membership win at $79.20 — so they know neither membership pays at their pace, and they check the $10.00 fare case before assuming a discount always helps.
  • The rider whose city surges hard on Lyft: they learn a 1.4x Lyft surge makes Uber One win by $33.76 — so they know to switch apps when Lyft spikes, and they check the 1.22x tie before trusting either side blindly.
  • The budget rider hunting the cheapest month: they learn 30 rides a month makes Lyft Pink win by $68.30 — so they know the heavy-use answer, and they check the no-surge case at $0.80 before assuming the gap is always that wide.

Accuracy & limitations

The math is exact for the numbers you enter: each side is the rides times the fare times the surge, with the membership discount and fee applied where they belong, and the winner is the lowest of the four totals. What the model cannot do is know your surge: check the multipliers, because a Lyft surge that runs at 1.4x instead of 1.1x flips the answer to Uber One by $33.76, and an Uber surge that drops to 1.0x flips it the same way. It assumes the same pattern every ride and leaves out tips, tolls, wait time and availability. Membership fees and discounts are defaults you can edit — check the current terms in the app. For the same question about a cab, see Uber vs taxi; for the same question about a rental car and rideshare, see rent a car vs rideshare calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Which rideshare is usually cheaper, Uber or Lyft?

It depends on the surge in your city — at the defaults Lyft Pink wins by $15.65. Lyft without a membership is $237.60 against Uber’s $259.20, because Lyft’s surge is 1.1x against Uber’s 1.2x. But the answer flips with the surge: if Uber’s surge drops to 1.0x, Uber One wins by $17.56; if Lyft’s surge rises to 1.4x, Uber One wins by $33.76. Check both apps before you order, because the cheaper one changes by the hour.

Is Uber One worth it?

Yes, once you ride 5 times a month at these fares. Uber One costs $9.99 a month and saves 10% on rides, so it pays for itself at 4.625 rides a month — 5 rides, in whole numbers. At 5 rides Uber One costs $107.19 against $108.00 without, saving $0.81. At 4 rides it costs $87.75 against $86.40, losing $1.35. At the defaults of 12 rides it saves $15.93 a month. If you ride less than 5 times a month, skip it.

Is Lyft Pink worth it?

Yes, once you ride 7 times a month at these fares. Lyft Pink costs $19.99 a month and saves 15% on rides, so it pays for itself at 6.7306 rides a month — 7 rides, in whole numbers. At 7 rides Lyft Pink costs $137.80 against $138.60 without, saving $0.80. At 6 rides it costs $120.97 against $118.80, losing $2.17. At the defaults of 12 rides it saves $15.65 a month over Lyft without a membership, and $21.32 over Uber One. The fee is double Uber One’s, so it needs more rides to pay off.

What does this comparison leave out?

Tips, tolls, wait times, availability and city differences. A tip is the same on either side, so it does not change which one wins, but it does change what the month costs. Tolls are charged on top of the fare on both sides. Wait time is not priced at all: if Lyft takes ten minutes longer to arrive, that time is worth something, and it is not in the $259.20 or the $221.95. Availability matters too: in a city where one side has no drivers at 2 a.m., the other side wins by default.

What happens when neither side is surging?

Lyft Pink still wins, but only by $0.80. With both surges at 1.0x, Uber is $216.00, Uber One is $204.39, Lyft is $216.00 and Lyft Pink is $203.59. The memberships are doing all the work: without them the two sides tie at $216.00, because the same fare times the same rides is the same money. A $0.80 win is a coin flip — one tip, one toll, or one slow pickup erases it.

Can Uber ever beat Lyft on the fare alone?

Not at these surges — Uber is always 9.09% more expensive. Uber’s surge is 1.2x and Lyft’s is 1.1x, so the ratio is 1.2 ÷ 1.1 = 1.0909, and every fare is 9.09% dearer on Uber before any membership. There is no break-even base fare: a higher fare just makes the gap bigger in dollars, and a lower fare makes it smaller, but Uber never closes it. Uber only wins when its surge falls, its membership discount grows, or Lyft’s surge rises.
