Reverse: the break-even rental rate is $39.00 a day (exact); 4.89 rides a day break even (exact 4.8889 — at 5 rides a day the rental wins, because rides are whole); the break-even average fare is $22.00 (exact); the break-even surge is 1.22× (exact 1.2222).

How renting a car vs rideshare is really compared

The two ways of getting around are priced on the same trip: the same number of days, the same travelling. The rental side is the daily rate plus insurance, plus the miles a day times the gas and wear cost per mile, plus parking a day, all times the days. The rideshare side is the rides a day times the average fare times the surge multiplier, all times the days. The winner is whichever total is lower, and the difference is the saving. This calculator compares money only: it leaves out the rental pickup and dropoff time, tolls, and rideshare wait time.

At the defaults — 3 days, rental $55 a day, insurance $12 a day, 40 miles a day at $0.15 a mile, parking $15 a day, 4 rides a day at $18 a ride, surge 1.0 — the rental day is $55 + $12 + 40 × $0.15 + $15 = $88.00, and the rental total is $88.00 × 3 = $264.00. The rideshare day is 4 × $18 × 1.0 = $72.00, and the rideshare total is $72.00 × 3 = $216.00. Rideshare wins by $48.00.

The worked example, line by line

Setup: 3 days, rental $55 a day, insurance $12 a day, 40 miles a day at $0.15 a mile, parking $15 a day, 4 rides a day at $18, surge 1.0.

Line 1 — the rental day. $55 + $12 + 40 × $0.15 + $15 = $88.00.

Line 2 — the rental total. $88.00 × 3 = $264.00.

Line 3 — the rideshare day. 4 × $18 × 1.0 = $72.00.

Line 4 — the rideshare total. $72.00 × 3 = $216.00.

Line 5 — the winner. $264.00 − $216.00 = $48.00, so rideshare wins by $48.00.

Reverse: the break-even rental rate is $39.00 a day (exact — $72.00 a day minus $33.00 of insurance, gas and parking); 4.89 rides a day break even (exact 4.8889 — at 5 rides a day the rental wins, because rides are whole); the break-even average fare is $22.00 (exact); the break-even surge is 1.22× (exact 1.2222).

Every branch, checked

1 day: the rental is $88.00 against a $72.00 rideshare — rideshare wins by $16.00. One day is the same gap per day, a third of the trip.

7 days: the rental is $616.00 against a $504.00 rideshare — rideshare wins by $112.00. More days just scale the same $16.00-a-day gap.

8 rides/day: the rideshare day is 8 × $18 = $144.00, so the rideshare total is $432.00 against a $264.00 rental — the rental wins by $168.00. Four extra rides a day are worth $216.00 over the trip, and they flip the answer hard.

Rental $35/day: the rental day is $35 + $12 + $6 + $15 = $68.00, so the rental total is $204.00 against $216.00 — the rental wins by $12.00. This is the flip: a cheap daily rate is the one change that turns the rental into the winner without touching the rides.

Rental $80/day: the rental day is $113.00 and the rental total is $339.00 against $216.00 — rideshare wins by $123.00. A dear rental is no contest at all.

Fare $30: the rideshare day is 4 × $30 = $120.00, so the rideshare total is $360.00 against $264.00 — the rental wins by $96.00. Long, dear rides are where the rental earns its keep.

Surge 1.5×: the rideshare day is 4 × $18 × 1.5 = $108.00, so the rideshare total is $324.00 against $264.00 — the rental wins by $60.00. Surge is the quiet flip: half as much again on every fare, and the rental is cheaper.

Parking $0: the rental day is $55 + $12 + $6 + $0 = $73.00 and the rental total is $219.00 against $216.00 — rideshare wins by $3.00. Even free parking leaves the rental $3.00 behind: it is the nearest tie on the page, and it shows how close the defaults are.

Parking $40/day: the rental day is $113.00 and the rental total is $339.00 against $216.00 — rideshare wins by $123.00. City-centre parking is where the rental bleeds.

100 miles/day: the rental day is $55 + $12 + 100 × $0.15 + $15 = $97.00 and the rental total is $291.00 against $216.00 — rideshare wins by $75.00. More miles cost the rental $9.00 a day, and the rideshare does not care how far you go.

Insurance $0: the rental day is $76.00 and the rental total is $228.00 against $216.00 — rideshare wins by $12.00. Skipping the cover saves $36.00 over the trip, and it still is not enough.

Reverse — the lines that matter: the break-even rental rate is $39.00 a day; 4.89 rides a day break even (exact 4.8889); the break-even average fare is $22.00; the break-even surge is 1.22× (exact 1.2222).

The flip: at the defaults the rideshare wins by $48.00. The rental wins when the rides pile up (8 rides a day), the daily rate drops under $39.00, the fare tops $22.00, or the surge passes 1.22×.

What the defaults assume

The model assumes the trip days, rental rate, insurance, miles, gas and wear, parking, rides, fare and surge you enter, and the same pattern every day of the trip. It assumes the rental rate is the daily rate before insurance, gas and parking, and the fare is the average ride before surge — check both, because a rate that leaves out the airport fees and a fare that leaves out the airport rides both flatter the wrong side. It leaves out rental pickup and dropoff time, tolls and rideshare wait time. Rounding convention: money is rounded to cents, the break-even rides and surge to two decimals with the exact value to four, and all figures are computed from unrounded values, rounded only for display.

Who uses this

  • The traveller planning a 3-day city break: they learn rideshare wins by $48.00 at their numbers — so they know the car is not worth it, and they check the $39.00 break-even rate before booking one anyway.
  • The road-tripper doing 8 rides a day: they learn the rental wins by $168.00 — so they know the car pays for itself the moment the rides pile up, and they check the 5-rides-a-day case before assuming the rideshare is still cheaper.
  • The bargain hunter watching rental rates: they learn a $35 daily rate wins by $12.00 — so they know the flip is only $4.00 a day away from the break-even, and they check the $39.00 rate before paying $55.
  • The night owl riding at surge: they learn 1.5× surge makes the rental win by $60.00 — so they know peak-time rides are the rental’s best friend, and they check the 1.22× break-even before trusting the app’s price.

Accuracy & limitations

The math is exact for the numbers you enter: the rental day is the rate plus insurance plus miles times gas plus parking, the rideshare day is the rides times the fare times the surge, and the winner is the lower total. What the model cannot do is know your real driving and riding: check the miles and the rides, because a trip that runs longer than planned costs the rental more and the rideshare more still. It assumes the same pattern every day and leaves out pickup and dropoff time, tolls and wait time. Frequently asked questions

When does renting a car win over rideshare?

When the rides pile up, the daily rate is cheap, or the fares surge. At 8 rides a day the rental wins by $168.00, because rideshare is $432.00 against a $264.00 rental. At a $35 daily rate the rental wins by $12.00, because the rental day falls to $68.00 against a $72.00 rideshare day. At a $30 fare the rental wins by $96.00, and at 1.5× surge it wins by $60.00. At the defaults the rideshare wins by $48.00, so any of those changes is enough to flip it.

Does surge pricing change the answer?

Yes — the break-even surge is 1.22×. At the defaults the rental day is $88.00 and the rideshare day is $72.00 at no surge. At 1.22× surge the rideshare day is $88.00 too, and past that the rental wins: at 1.5× surge the rideshare day is $108.00 and the rental wins by $60.00 over the trip. If your rides are mostly at peak times, put the real surge in and the answer may flip.

What rental rate breaks even with rideshare?

$39.00 a day. The rental day is the rate plus $33.00 of insurance, gas and parking ($12 + $6 + $15), and the rideshare day is $72.00, so the rate that ties is $72.00 minus $33.00, which is $39.00 a day. A $35 daily rate wins by $12.00 over the trip, and an $80 daily rate loses by $123.00. If the rental is under $39 a day, take the car.

How many rides a day make the rental cheaper?

4.89 rides a day break even (exact 4.8889). Each ride costs $18, so 4.8889 rides a day cost the same $88.00 as the rental day. Rides are whole, so at 5 rides a day the rental wins — the rideshare day is $90.00 against an $88.00 rental day, and over 3 days the rental wins by $6.00. At 4 rides a day the rideshare wins by $48.00.

What if parking is free?

Even free parking leaves the rental $3.00 behind. With parking at $0 the rental day falls from $88.00 to $73.00, and the rental total falls from $264.00 to $219.00 — but the rideshare total is $216.00, so the rideshare still wins by $3.00 over the trip. Free parking is worth $45.00 over 3 days, and it is still not quite enough. One more dollar off the daily rate, and the rental wins.

What does this comparison leave out?

Rental pickup and dropoff time, tolls, and rideshare wait time. The rental side does not charge you for the hour at the rental desk or the trip back to return the car, and it does not include tolls. The rideshare side does not charge you for waiting for the car to arrive, or for the rides that never come at 2 a.m. Those are real costs in time, not money, so they are not in the $264.00 and $216.00 — but if your time is dear, the rental’s freedom to leave when you like is worth more than the $48.00 the rideshare saves.
