Train vs plane — the total trip cost, compared

The ticket is not the trip: the plane adds an airport transfer and two hours of airport overhead, and the train adds hours on the rails. This calculator adds the transfers and the value of your time to both sides, so the number you compare is the number the trip really costs — and it shows the fare and the hourly value that flip the answer.

How train vs plane is really compared

The ticket price is not the trip price. The fair comparison adds the transfer at each end and the value of the time the trip takes, then compares the all-in totals. The train is usually dearer in time and cheaper in cash; the plane is usually dearer in cash and cheaper in time. The winner is whichever all-in total is lower — and the gap is the margin.

At the defaults — train ticket $89, plane ticket $129, airport transfer $45, station transfer $10, train 4.5 h, flight 1.5 h, airport overhead 2.0 h, time value $25 an hour, 1 traveler — the train out-of-pocket is $89 + $10 = $99.00 and its time cost is 4.5 × $25 = $112.50, so the train all-in is $211.50. The plane out-of-pocket is $129 + $45 = $174.00 and its time cost is (1.5 + 2.0) × $25 = $87.50, so the plane all-in is $261.50. The train wins by $50.00. The plane costs $75.00 more out-of-pocket, and the train takes 1.0 h longer.

The worked example, line by line

Setup: train ticket $89, plane ticket $129, airport transfer $45, station transfer $10, train 4.5 h, flight 1.5 h, airport overhead 2.0 h, time value $25 an hour, 1 traveler.

Line 1 — the train out-of-pocket. $89 + $10 = $99.00.

Line 2 — the train time cost. 4.5 × $25 = $112.50.

Line 3 — the train all-in. $99.00 + $112.50 = $211.50.

Line 4 — the plane out-of-pocket. $129 + $45 = $174.00.

Line 5 — the plane time cost. (1.5 + 2.0) × $25 = $87.50.

Line 6 — the plane all-in. $174.00 + $87.50 = $261.50.

Line 7 — the winner. $261.50 − $211.50 = $50.00, so the train wins by $50.00. The plane costs $75.00 more out-of-pocket, and the train takes 1.0 h longer.

Reverse: the plane ticket that ties is $79.00 (at $79.00 the two all-ins tie at $211.50); the time value that flips it is $75.00 an hour (above it the plane wins on time); the train ticket that ties is $139.00 (at $139.00 the two all-ins tie at $261.50).

Every branch, checked

Time value $0/h: the time costs vanish, so the train is $99.00 and the plane is $174.00 — train by $75.00. On pure cash the train wins by more, because the plane’s time saving is worth nothing.

Time value $50/h: the train is $324.00 and the plane is $349.00 — train by $25.00. Doubling the value of time halves the train’s margin.

Time value $100/h: the train is $549.00 and the plane is $524.00 — plane wins by $25.00. Once the hour is worth $100, the plane’s hour saved is worth more than its cash premium.

Plane ticket $79: the plane all-in is $211.50, exactly the train’s — a tie. This is the break-even fare: a dollar less and the plane wins.

Plane ticket $69: the plane all-in is $201.50 — plane wins by $10.00. A $10 fare cut flips the answer.

Train ticket $139: the train all-in is $261.50, exactly the plane’s — a tie. This is the train fare that gives the plane its win back.

Flight 1.0 h: the plane time cost falls to $75.00, so the plane all-in is $249.00 — train by $37.50. A shorter flight helps the plane, but not enough at $25 an hour.

Train 3.0 h: the train time cost falls to $75.00, so the train all-in is $174.00 — train by $87.50. A faster train is the biggest win on the page.

Airport transfer $0: the plane all-in is $216.50 — train by $5.00. Even free transfers leave the plane behind, because the $45 transfer is only part of the plane’s $75.00 cash gap.

Airport transfer $100: the plane all-in is $316.50 — train by $105.00. A dear airport taxi is the plane’s worst lever.

2 travelers: the train is $423.00 and the plane is $523.00 — train by $100.00. Every term is per person, so the gap doubles with the party.

Reverse — the lines that matter: the plane ticket that ties is $79.00; the time value that flips it is $75.00 an hour; the train ticket that ties is $139.00.

What the defaults assume

The model assumes the ticket prices, the transfers, the hours and the value of your time you enter, and it multiplies every term by the number of travelers. It assumes the airport overhead is 2.0 hours of check-in, security and waiting, and it leaves out baggage fees, seat selection, meals, parking beyond the transfer, and the value of comfort — the $50.00 gap at the defaults is the money-and-time gap only, not the whole decision. Rounding convention: money is rounded to cents, hours are shown to one decimal, and all figures are computed from unrounded values, rounded only for display.

Who uses this

  • The weekend traveller booking a city break: they learn the train is $211.50 all-in and the plane is $261.50 — so they know the train is cheaper, and they check the $79.00 break-even fare before booking the flight.
  • The business traveller on the clock: they learn the plane wins once the hour is worth $75.00 — so they know their hourly rate is the decision, and they check the $100-an-hour case at $524.00 before choosing the plane.
  • The family of two pricing a trip: they learn two travelers make the train win by $100.00 — so they know the gap doubles with the party, and they check the $69 plane fare at $201.50 before splitting the booking.
  • The budget traveller hunting a fare: they learn a free airport transfer still leaves the plane $5.00 behind — so they know the transfer is not the whole story, and they check the $100-transfer case at $316.50 before paying for the taxi.

Accuracy & limitations

The math is exact for the numbers you enter: the out-of-pocket is the ticket plus the transfer, the time cost is the hours times the value of your time, and the all-in is the sum. What the model cannot do is price your time for you: check the hourly value, because $0 an hour and $100 an hour give opposite answers. It assumes the 2.0-hour airport overhead and leaves out baggage fees, seat selection, meals, parking beyond the transfer, and comfort. Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to take the train or the plane?

At the defaults, the train — by $50.00 all-in. The train is $211.50 all-in ($99.00 out-of-pocket plus $112.50 of time) and the plane is $261.50 all-in ($174.00 out-of-pocket plus $87.50 of time). The plane’s ticket is dearer and its airport transfer is $45 against the station’s $10, which the plane’s faster trip does not cover at $25 an hour.

How do you compare train vs plane fairly?

Add the transfers and the value of the time, not just the tickets. Train out-of-pocket is $89 + $10 = $99.00; plane out-of-pocket is $129 + $45 = $174.00. Train time is 4.5 h × $25 = $112.50; plane time is (1.5 + 2.0) h × $25 = $87.50. All-in, the train is $211.50 and the plane is $261.50.

What plane ticket price ties with the train?

$79.00. At $79.00 the plane’s out-of-pocket is $79 + $45 = $124.00, plus $87.50 of time, which is $211.50 — exactly the train’s all-in. At $69.00 the plane wins by $10.00.

At what value of time does the plane win?

$75.00 an hour. The plane saves 1.0 hour (4.5 h by train against 3.5 h door to door by plane) but costs $75.00 more out-of-pocket, so the hour has to be worth $75.00 to break even. At $50 an hour the train still wins by $25.00; at $100 an hour the plane wins by $25.00.

Does a free airport transfer make the plane win?

No — the train still wins by $5.00. With a $0 airport transfer the plane’s out-of-pocket is $129.00 and its all-in is $216.50, against the train’s $211.50. The transfer is only part of the plane’s $75.00 out-of-pocket gap.

How much does the train win by for two travelers?

By $100.00. Every term scales with the travelers, so the train is $423.00 all-in and the plane is $523.00. The gap doubles because both the tickets and the time are per person.

Should I count airport waiting time?

Yes — it is the plane’s hidden cost. The flight is 1.5 hours but the door-to-door plane trip is 3.5 hours once the 2.0 hours of check-in, security and waiting are added. At $25 an hour that overhead is $50.00 of time cost, and it is what keeps the plane from winning at the defaults.
