Future Value of Annuity Calculator: Monthly Savings

On the defaults — $200 a month at 6% for 20 years — the future value is $92,408.18, on $48,000 of contributions, so $44,408.18 of it is interest. Put in your own monthly contribution, annual rate and term, and the calculator works out the future value of your annuity, your total contributions and the interest earned. This one finds the future value of an annuity — a fixed monthly payment, compounding every month, with the annuity factor worked out in full: the annuity-calculator page is the GENERAL ANNUITY TOOL — monthly contributions at a steady return, with the future value, total paid in, interest earned and your monthly payout — not the annuity factor and the reverses; the future-value-calculator page is the LUMP SUM PLUS CONTRIBUTIONS — $10,000 plus $200 a month at 7% — not a pure monthly annuity with no starting balance; the compound-interest-calculator page is the COMPOUND GROWTH — $10,000 plus $200 a month at 7%, with a full monthly breakdown — not the annuity factor; and the compound-growth-calculator page is the REPEATED PERCENTAGE CHANGES — how a rate compounds over periods — not a monthly savings annuity. No future-value-of-annuity calculator exists on this site — this one is the first.

Future value of annuity calculator

Future value = monthly contribution × annuity factor, where the annuity factor = ((1 + monthly rate)payments − 1) / monthly rate; monthly rate = annual rate / 12; payments = years × 12; total contributions = monthly contribution × payments; interest earned = future value − total contributions. On the defaults — $200 a month; 6% annual rate; 20 years; annuity factor 462.040895161; future value $92,408.18; total contributions $48,000.00; interest earned $44,408.18. The future value is $92,408.18, the total contributions are $48,000.00 and the interest earned is $44,408.18: the future value, the contributions and the interest are three outputs, never the same number. The last ten years do most of the work — after 10 years the value is only $32,775.87, and the second ten years add $59,632.31, almost twice as much again. Ten more years more than doubles the value — 30 years gives $200,903.01 against $92,408.18 at 20 years — and 40 years gives $398,298.15. At 0% the factor is just the number of payments — 240 — and the future value is the contributions alone, $48,000.00, with no interest at all. A one-dollar move in the monthly payment moves the future value by $462.04, so the neighbour’s displayed future value can sit a hair from the target — the page prints the unrounded six-decimal future value and interest in full so the rounding does not mislead you. The calculator shows all of it with notes, never hides it.

Your monthly contribution — what you save each month, in dollars — the default is $200.

Your annual rate — the return on the savings, in percent a year — the default is 6%.

Your term — how many years you save for — the default is 20.

What does $92,408.18 mean?

It means $200 a month at 6% for 20 years grows to $92,408.18 — $48,000 of it is the money you put in, and $44,408.18 of it is interest the money earned. The future value, the contributions and the interest are three outputs, never the same number — the future value is what you end with, the contributions are what you paid in, and the interest is what compounding added.

Three things to check before you trust the number

The last ten years do most of the work. After 10 years the value is only $32,775.87, and the second ten years add $59,632.31 — almost twice as much again. An annuity rewards patience more than it rewards the monthly amount.

The rate is what the annuity earns, not the payment. A 4-point rise in the rate, from 6% to 10%, lifts the future value from $92,408.18 to $151,873.77. A small rate difference is a large money difference over 20 years.

The payment scales the answer exactly. $100 a month gives exactly half the future value, $46,204.09, and $500 a month gives $231,020.45 — the future value is a ratio, so doubling the payment doubles the value and the interest alike.

Worked example

On the defaults: $200 a month, 6% annual rate, 20 years.

  1. Monthly rate: 6% ÷ 12 = 0.5% a month.
  2. Number of payments: 20 × 12 = 240.
  3. Annuity factor: ((1.005)240 − 1) ÷ 0.005 = 462.040895161.
  4. Future value: $200 × 462.040895161 = $92,408.18 (unrounded 92408.179032).
  5. Total contributions: $200 × 240 = $48,000.00.
  6. Interest earned: $92,408.18 − $48,000.00 = $44,408.18 (unrounded 44408.179032).
  7. Largest monthly payment for a $100,000 future value: $216 — at $216 the future value is $99,800.83 (unrounded 99800.833355), and at $217 it is $100,262.87.
  8. Smallest whole years for a $100,000 future value: 21 years — at 21 years the future value is $100,574.83 (unrounded 100574.825788), and at 20 years it is $92,408.18.

What the defaults assume

The defaults are $200 a month at 6% for 20 years, with the same payment every month, the same rate the whole time, no fees and no taxes — the payment is made at the end of each month, so each payment earns interest from the month after it is made. They are a starting point, not a benchmark: a retirement annuity, a college fund and a house deposit have very different rates and terms, and the right annuity for you is the one whose payment you can keep up and whose rate you can actually earn. Change the three numbers to your own and the calculator recomputes instantly. The last ten years do most of the work — it is not a mistake, it is how compounding works: the interest earns interest, and the balance is largest at the end.

These notes repeat in every explainer section because this page is built to be read start to finish: the defaults are one annuity’s numbers, not a standard; the last ten years do most of the work; the rate is what the annuity earns, not the payment; and the payment scales the answer exactly.

Who uses this

Accuracy & limitations

The calculator does the arithmetic exactly — the annuity factor is ((1 + monthly rate)payments − 1) divided by the monthly rate, the future value is the payment times the factor, and the interest is the future value minus the contributions — and every figure on this page is checked against an independent model, month by month as well as by the closed form. What it cannot do is predict your return: a real annuity’s rate varies year to year, fees and taxes take a cut, and inflation shrinks what the future value buys. It also assumes the payment is made at the end of each month — payments made at the start of the month earn one more month of interest each, and the annuity-calculator page covers the payout side. And the future value is $99,800.83 unrounded 99800.833355 at $216 a month and $100,262.87 at $217 — both near $100,000 — so the page prints the unrounded figure so the rounding does not mislead you.

Future value = monthly contribution × annuity factor, where the annuity factor = ((1 + monthly rate)payments − 1) / monthly rate; monthly rate = annual rate / 12; payments = years × 12; total contributions = monthly contribution × payments; interest earned = future value − total contributions. On the defaults — $200 a month, 6% annual rate, 20 years — the annuity factor is 462.040895161, the future value is $92,408.18, the total contributions are $48,000.00 and the interest earned is $44,408.18. Largest monthly payment for a $100,000 future value: $216. Smallest whole years for a $100,000 future value: 21. Largest APR for a $50,000 future value ($200 a month, 10 years): 13.40%. Smallest monthly payment for a $50,000 future value (6%, 10 years): $306. Longest whole years for a $50,000 future value ($200 a month, 6%): 13. Frequently asked questions

What is the future value of an annuity?

It is what a series of equal monthly payments grows to with compound interest: $200 a month at 6% for 20 years is $92,408.18. The payments are the annuity, and the future value is what they are worth at the end of the term.

How do I calculate the future value of an annuity?

Multiply the monthly payment by the annuity factor: ((1 + monthly rate) to the power of the number of payments, minus 1) divided by the monthly rate. On the defaults the factor is 462.040895161, so $200 x 462.040895161 is $92,408.18.

How much interest will I earn on $200 a month?

At 6% for 20 years, $44,408.18 — on $48,000 of contributions. At 10% it is $103,873.77, and at 3% it is only $17,660.40. The rate decides the interest, not the payment alone.

What monthly payment do I need for $100,000?

At 6% over 20 years, $216 a month: at $216 the future value is $99,800.83 (unrounded 99800.833355), and at $217 it is $100,262.87. The calculator’s reverse check works this out for any set of numbers.

How long does it take $200 a month to reach $100,000?

21 years at 6%: at 21 years the future value is $100,574.83 (unrounded 100574.825788), and at 20 years it is $92,408.18. The last year adds $8,166.65 — more than the first year’s $2,467.11 by a long way.

Does a longer term help more than a bigger payment?

Usually, yes: ten more years more than doubles the value — 30 years gives $200,903.01 against $92,408.18 at 20 years — while doubling the payment only doubles it. Time is the bigger lever, because the interest earns interest.

What if my rate is 0%?

Then the factor is just the number of payments — 240 — and the future value is the contributions alone: $200 a month for 20 years is $48,000.00, with no interest at all.

What is the difference between an annuity and compound interest?

An annuity is a series of payments; compound interest is the growth of money already saved. The compound-interest-calculator page grows a lump sum plus a monthly contribution, while this page grows a pure monthly annuity with no starting balance.
