Future Value Factor Table

The future value interest factor (FVIF) turns any present value into a future value: FV = PV × FVIF, where FVIF = (1 + r)n. $1,000 at 7% for 10 years uses the factor 1.967151 — $1,967.15 at the end. Read any factor straight off the table below, or use the two live lookups for exact answers.

The starting amount. $1,000 by default. Cannot be negative.

The interest rate per compounding period. 7% per year by default. Must be positive; up to 100.

The 60-second rule

FVIF = (1 + r)n — the future value of $1 after n periods at rate r per period. Future value = present value × FVIF. At the defaults: (1.07)10 = 1.967151, so $1,000 becomes $1,967.15. Find the rate column, drop down to the period row, multiply — that's the whole table.

Reading the table

Example: $5,000 at 6% for 15 years. The 6% column, row 15 reads 2.396558, so $5,000 × 2.396558 = $11,982.79. The lookup above solves the same thing to full precision.

Who uses this

  • The finance student: exam-day factor lookups for TVM problems — (1.07)10 = 1.967151 is the single most-used row.
  • The quick estimator: $50,000 at 8% for 20 years? Row 20, 8% reads 4.660957 — $233,047.86 without touching a calculator.
  • The textbook checker: verifying a printed table against computed factors — every value here is machine-computed to 6 decimals, not hand-typed.
  • The researcher citing a factor: the cite block below formats the table for papers and problem sets.

Accuracy & limitations

This is pure computation: FVIF = (1 + r)n, evaluated exactly and rounded to 6 decimal places. There is no estimate anywhere in the table — the only error is the sub-penny rounding in the last decimal. The compounding frequency caveat: the table's “periods” are whatever the rate is quoted per — if the rate is annual and money compounds monthly, n is months and r is the monthly rate, not the table's annual rows. It prices a single lump sum only, not annuities (that's FVIFA), and it ignores taxes, inflation, and fees.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between FVIF and FVIFA?

FVIF compounds a single lump sum: FVIF = (1 + r)n. FVIFA (the annuity factor) compounds a stream of equal payments: FVIFA = ((1 + r)n − 1) / r. This table is FVIF only — if you're adding money every year, you need the annuity factor instead.

When does a table beat a calculator?

On exams — finance courses still test time-value-of-money with factor tables, and this one matches the (1.07)10 = 1.967151 row every textbook uses. A table also wins for quick mental math and for checking printed tables against machine-computed values.

How do I use the table with monthly compounding?

Convert to monthly periods: n = years × 12 and r = annual rate ÷ 12. The table's rows are annual-rate factors — reading the 7% row for a monthly-compounding problem gives the wrong answer. The lookup above handles any rate and period directly.

Is the 1.967151 factor exact?

It's (1.07)10 rounded to 6 decimal places — exact to the sub-penny on any realistic dollar amount. $1,000 × 1.967151 = $1,967.15, matching the full-precision answer to the cent.

Can the factor ever be below 1?

Not with a positive rate — FVIF = (1 + r)n is always above 1 for r > 0. A factor below 1 would mean the money shrank, which is the present value factor (PVIF), a different table.

Why do some rates have round factors?

Convenient coincidences, not data errors: (1.02)10 = 1.218994, not a round number, but (1.10)2 = 1.21 exactly. Every value here is computed, not chosen.
