Compound Interest Calculator: Growth, Interest & Time

On the defaults — $10,000 to start, $200 a month, 7% a year for 20 years — the future value is $144,572.72: $40,387.39 of growth on the starting amount plus $104,185.33 of growth on the contributions, against $58,000.00 put in and $86,572.72 of interest earned. Put in your own starting amount, monthly contribution, rate, and years, and the calculator works out the future value, what you put in, and what compounding earned — and works backwards when you have a target instead. The future value calculator grows one lump sum once; this page adds monthly contributions and splits the ending into what you put in vs what compounding earned. The daily compound interest guide explains daily compounding; this tool compounds monthly and adds contributions.

Compound interest calculator

Compound interest is interest on interest — the starting amount grows, the monthly contributions grow, and the growth itself grows. Put in a starting amount, a monthly contribution, an annual rate, and a number of years, and the calculator works out the future value, the total contributions, and the interest earned — and works backwards when you have a target instead.

The amount you start with — the lump sum that starts compounding on day one. The default is $10,000.

The amount you add every month, at month-end. The default is $200.

The yearly return, compounded monthly — 7% is the long-run stock-market average used here. The default is 7%.

How long the money stays invested. The default is 20 years.

Starting $10,000.00, monthly $200.00, rate 7.00%, 20 years: future value $144,572.72, contributions $58,000.00, interest $86,572.72Starting $10,000.00, monthly $200.00, rate 7.00%, 20 years: future value $144,572.72, contributions $58,000.00, interest $86,572.72Starting $10,000.00, monthly $200.00, rate 7.00%, 20 years: future value $144,572.72, contributions $58,000.00, interest $86,572.72. The future value has two parts: the starting amount grows to $40,387.39 and the monthly contributions grow to $104,185.33 — each part is rounded to cents, then added. The formula is future value = starting amount × (1 + rate ÷ 12)^(12 × years) + monthly contribution × ((1 + rate ÷ 12)^(12 × years) − 1) ÷ (rate ÷ 12), with contributions at month-end. This assumes one flat return every month and ignores taxes, fees, and inflation — the ending is a projection, not a promise.

How compound interest is worked out

On the defaults — a $10,000.00 starting amount, $200.00 a month, and a 7% annual rate for 20 years — the future value is $144,572.72, the total contributions are $58,000.00, and the interest earned is $86,572.72. The whole calculation is three moves: grow the starting amount, grow the monthly contributions, and add the two parts.

Five things about the model are worth stating plainly. First, the monthly rate is the annual rate divided by 12 — 7% ÷ 12 — and the number of months is the years times 12 — 20 × 12 = 240 months. Second, the starting amount grows to $10,000.00 × (1 + 7% ÷ 12)^240 = $40,387.39. Third, the monthly contributions grow to $200.00 × ((1 + 7% ÷ 12)^240 − 1) ÷ (7% ÷ 12) = $104,185.33. Fourth, the future value is the two parts added — $40,387.39 + $104,185.33 = $144,572.72 — and the total contributions are $10,000.00 + $200.00 × 240 = $58,000.00, so the interest earned is $144,572.72 − $58,000.00 = $86,572.72. And fifth, each part is rounded to cents before the two are added, and the model assumes one flat return every month, ignores taxes, fees, and inflation, and treats the ending as a projection, not a promise; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.

The worked example, line by line

Setup: $10,000.00 starting amount, $200.00 a month, 7% annual rate, 20 years.

Line 1 — the monthly rate and the months. The monthly rate is 7% ÷ 12 and the months are 20 × 12 = 240.

Line 2 — grow the starting amount. The starting amount grows to $10,000.00 × (1 + 7% ÷ 12)^240 = $40,387.39.

Line 3 — grow the monthly contributions. The contributions grow to $200.00 × ((1 + 7% ÷ 12)^240 − 1) ÷ (7% ÷ 12) = $104,185.33.

Line 4 — add the parts and split the ending. The future value is $40,387.39 + $104,185.33 = $144,572.72, the total contributions are $10,000.00 + $200.00 × 240 = $58,000.00, and the interest earned is $144,572.72 − $58,000.00 = $86,572.72.

Who uses this

  • The saver starting with $10,000.00: they learn the future value is $144,572.72 and the interest is $86,572.72 — and they check the $882.30 reverse to see the monthly amount for a $500,000.00 future value.
  • The saver starting from $0: they learn $200.00 a month alone grows to $104,185.33 — and they check the 27-year reverse to see when the ending first passes $250,000.00.
  • The saver with 30 years: they learn the future value is $325,159.17 — and they check the 11.86% reverse to see the rate for $300,000.00 in 20 years.
  • The saver at 4%: they learn the future value is $95,580.75 — and they check the $23,723.91 reverse to see the starting amount for a $200,000.00 future value.

Accuracy & limitations

The math is first-principles: the future value is the starting amount times (1 + rate ÷ 12)^(12 × years) plus the monthly contribution times ((1 + rate ÷ 12)^(12 × years) − 1) ÷ (rate ÷ 12), with contributions at month-end, and the two parts are each rounded to cents before they are added. Every figure is rounded to cents half-up. What the model cannot do is tell you what YOUR money will be worth: it is a projection only — it does NOT model a return that changes year to year; it does NOT model taxes, fees, or inflation; it does NOT model withdrawals or contributions that change over time; and it assumes the same flat return every month, which no real investment delivers. A 0% rate means no growth at all — the ending is exactly what you put in. Use it to see the levers — time first, then the rate, then the monthly amount — then check a full plan before you act on it.

Cite this calculatorBright Side Kit. “Compound Interest Calculator: Growth, Interest & Time” brightoolbox.com, 2026. Method: future value = starting amount × (1 + rate ÷ 12)^(12 × years) + monthly contribution × ((1 + rate ÷ 12)^(12 × years) − 1) ÷ (rate ÷ 12), with contributions at month-end; the two parts are each rounded to cents, then added. Total contributions = starting amount + monthly contribution × months; interest earned = future value − total contributions. This is a projection, not financial advice. Reverses: the monthly contribution for a $500,000.00 future value is $882.30 (exact 882.2981; at $882.30 the future value is $500,000.98); the years for a future value of $250,000 or more are 27 (at 27 years the future value is $257,252.47); the annual rate for a $300,000.00 future value is 11.86% (exact 11.8577%; at 11.86% the future value is $300,106.56); the starting amount for a $200,000.00 future value is $23,723.91 (exact 23723.9083; at $23,723.91 the future value is $200,000.01); the monthly contribution for a $1,000,000.00 future value is $1,842.13 (exact 1842.1261; at $1,842.13 the future value is $1,000,002.02); the annual rate for a $400,000.00 future value is 13.67% (exact 13.6676%; at 13.67% the future value is $400,154.52). Defaults: Starting $10,000.00, monthly $200.00, rate 7.00%, 20 years: future value $144,572.72, contributions $58,000.00, interest $86,572.72. Bright Side Kit. Frequently asked questions

What is compound interest?

Interest on interest — the growth itself grows. On the defaults, $10,000.00 plus $200.00 a month at 7% grows to $144,572.72 in 20 years: $58,000.00 put in and $86,572.72 earned. The interest earned is more than the money put in.

How do I calculate compound interest with monthly contributions?

Grow the starting amount and the contributions separately, then add them. The starting amount grows to $10,000.00 × (1 + 7% ÷ 12)^240 = $40,387.39 and the contributions grow to $200.00 × ((1 + 7% ÷ 12)^240 − 1) ÷ (7% ÷ 12) = $104,185.33, for a future value of $144,572.72.

How much will $10,000 grow to at 7% in 20 years with $200 a month?

$144,572.72. The starting amount grows to $40,387.39 and the contributions grow to $104,185.33, against $58,000.00 put in and $86,572.72 of interest earned.

How much a month do I need to reach $500,000 in 20 years?

$882.30 a month at 7%. The exact monthly contribution is 882.2981; at the displayed $882.30 the future value is $500,000.98, $0.98 over the $500,000.00 target — rounding.

How many years does it take to reach $250,000?

27 years on the defaults. At 27 years the future value is $257,252.47; at 26 years it is $237,597.98 — 27 is the first whole-year horizon past $250,000.

What annual rate do I need to reach $300,000 in 20 years?

11.86% on the defaults. The exact rate is 11.8577%; at the displayed 11.86% the future value is $300,106.56, and at 11.85% it is $299,636.26.

What happens if the rate is 0%?

Nothing grows — the ending is just what you put in. At a 0% rate the future value is $58,000.00, the contributions are $58,000.00, and the interest is $0.00.

Does compound interest work with no starting amount?

Yes — the monthly contributions do all the work. Starting from $0, $200.00 a month at 7% grows to $104,185.33 in 20 years: $48,000.00 put in and $56,185.33 earned.
