How baby shoe sizes work
For babies the EU size is the steadiest way to shop across brands, because it tracks foot length directly — the EU number climbs steadily with the foot, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, while US and UK sizes step in whole numbers. A 12–18-month-old wears a US 5, a UK 4 and an EU 20 — a 4.50 in (11.4 cm) foot; a 24-month-old wears a US 7, a UK 6 and an EU 22 — a 5.00 in (12.7 cm) foot.
Five things about the model are worth stating plainly. First, the table is indexed by age in whole months, and the age bands are whole-month ranges — 0–3, 4–6, 7–9, 10–12, 13–18, 19–23, 24. Second, foot length in cm is inches × 2.54, rounded to 1 decimal place — 4.50 × 2.54 = 11.43 → 11.4 cm. Third, a 24-month-old takes the “24 months” row (US 7, EU 22), not the 18–24 row — the bands are whole months. Fourth, the EU size is the steadiest way to shop across brands, because it tracks foot length directly. And fifth, brands vary, so always measure the foot and check the brand’s own chart before ordering; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.
The worked example, line by line
Setup: age 15 months.
Line 1 — the age band. 15 months falls in the 13–18 whole-month range, so the band is 12–18 months.
Line 2 — the US size. The US size for the 12–18 month band is 5.
Line 3 — the UK size. The UK size for the 12–18 month band is 4.
Line 4 — the EU size. The EU size for the 12–18 month band is 20.
Line 5 — the foot length. The foot is 4.50 in, which is 4.50 × 2.54 = 11.43 → 11.4 cm.

Who uses this
- The parent ordering shoes online: they learn a 15-month-old wears a US 5, a UK 4 and an EU 20 — and they check the age-20 branch to see the next size up.
- The parent whose baby is between sizes: they learn a 4.00 in foot is the 6–9 month band — and they check the foot-5.00 reverse to see the largest row.
- The grandparent buying a gift: they learn an EU 22 is the 24 month band, US 7 — and they check the EU 16 reverse to see the smallest size.
- The shopper reading a European label: they learn the EU size tracks foot length directly — and they check the R6 reverse to see that the 12–18 month band is the smallest with an EU of at least 20.
Accuracy & limitations
The table is the standard published baby shoe size chart: US 1–7, UK 0–6, EU 16–22, foot 3.50–5.00 in; foot length in cm is inches × 2.54, rounded to 1 decimal place. What the calculator cannot do is fit your baby: brands vary, so always measure the foot and check the brand’s own chart before ordering; measure in the evening, when feet are at their largest, with the baby standing if they can; leave about 0.5 in (about 1 cm) of growing room — a thumb’s width at the toe; babies outgrow shoes fast, often every 2–3 months in the first year, so buy the next size up only when the current one is snug; soft-soled shoes are the usual choice before a baby is walking, and a stiff sole is not needed until they are. Use the foot length, not just the age — then check the brand’s chart.

Frequently asked questions
What shoe size does a 15-month-old wear?
A US 5, a UK 4 and an EU 20. A 15-month-old falls in the 12–18 month band, with a 4.50 in (11.4 cm) foot.
What is the smallest baby shoe size?
US 1, UK 0, EU 16. The 0–3 month band, for a 3.50 in (8.9 cm) foot.
What shoe size does a 2-year-old wear?
A US 7, a UK 6 and an EU 22. A 24-month-old takes the 24 month row, with a 5.00 in (12.7 cm) foot — not the 18–24 month row.
How do I measure my baby's foot?
Measure in the evening, when feet are at their largest, with the baby standing if they can. Leave about 0.5 in (about 1 cm) of growing room — a thumb’s width at the toe.
Why use the EU size to shop?
EU sizes are based on foot length. The EU number climbs steadily with the foot — 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 — while US and UK sizes step in whole numbers, so the EU size is the steadiest way to shop across brands.
What is the smallest age band with an EU size of at least 20?
The 12–18 month band, EU 20. The 9–12 month band is EU 19 — under 20.
How fast do babies outgrow shoes?
Often every 2–3 months in the first year. Buy the next size up only when the current one is snug.
Do babies need hard-soled shoes?
Not before they walk. Soft-soled shoes are the usual choice before a baby is walking, and a stiff sole is not needed until they are.
