How kids' clothing sizes work
For kids the UK size equals the US size — a US 6 is a UK 6, unlike women’s dresses, where the UK size is the US size + 4. The EU size is the child’s height in centimetres — an EU 116 fits a child about 116 cm tall — and the sizes step by 6 cm: 92, 98, 104, 110, 116, 122, 128, then 140, 152, 164, 176. The “T” in 2T, 3T and 4T stands for toddler — toddler sizes are cut shorter and roomier in the nappy area than the same-number regular sizes. From age 5 the sizes are plain numbers: 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16.
Five things about the model are worth stating plainly. First, the table is indexed by age, and the UK size equals the US size for every row. Second, the EU size is the height in centimetres, stepped to the standard sizes. Third, height in centimetres is height in inches × 2.54, rounded to the nearest whole centimetre — 44 × 2.54 = 111.76 cm, which rounds to 112 cm. Fourth, height is the reliable column, not age — a tall 6-year-old may need a size 7, and the height range in the table is what to measure against. And fifth, brands vary, so always check the brand’s own chart before ordering; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.
The worked example, line by line
Setup: age 6.
Line 1 — the US size. The US size for age 6 is 6.
Line 2 — the UK size. The UK size equals the US size, so it is 6.
Line 3 — the EU size. The EU size is the height in centimetres: 116 cm, so it is 116.
Line 4 — the height. The height range for age 6 is 44–47 in, which is 44 × 2.54 = 111.76 → 112 cm to 47 × 2.54 = 119.38 → 119 cm.
Line 5 — a tall 6-year-old. A 6-year-old who is 48 inches tall is in the 47–50 in row, which is age 7 — a whole size apart from age 6.

Who uses this
- The parent ordering clothes online: they learn a 6-year-old wears a US 6, a UK 6 and an EU 116 — and they check the age-8 branch for the next size up.
- The parent whose child is between sizes: they learn a 51-inch-tall child wears a US 8, EU 128 — and they check the R3 reverse to see why the height column decides.
- The grandparent buying a gift: they learn an EU 140 is age 10, US 10 — and they check the EU 164 reverse to see the age-14 size.
- The shopper reading a European label: they learn an EU 152 is age 12, US 12 — and they check the R5 reverse to see that age 12 is the smallest age with an EU size of at least 150.
Accuracy & limitations
The table is the standard published kids’ size chart: UK = US for every row; the EU size is the height in centimetres, stepped to the standard sizes 92, 98, 104, 110, 116, 122, 128, 140, 152, 164, 176; height in centimetres is height in inches × 2.54, rounded to the nearest whole centimetre. What the calculator cannot do is fit your child: brands vary, so always check the brand’s own chart before ordering; age is only a starting point — two 6-year-olds can be 44 inches or 48 inches tall, which is a whole size apart; height is the reliable column, not age — measure height standing barefoot against a wall, and measure the chest at its widest point if the brand lists one; if a child falls between two sizes, size up for jackets and trousers they will grow into, and size down for stretchy tops. Use the height range, not the age — then check the brand’s chart.
