How high should a TV mount be?
On the default — a standard TV mount 30 inches above the floor — the height is 76.20 cm from the bottom edge of the TV to the floor. The bands are low 24 to 29 inches, standard 30 to 36 inches and high 37 to 42 inches — closed at both ends — and the gaps match no standard type: 29.01 to 29.99 inches and 36.01 to 36.99 inches fall between the bands, and anything below 24 inches or above 42 inches matches no standard type either.
Three things about the chart are worth stating plainly.
First, the centimetres are the inches times 2.54: 30 × 2.54 = 76.20 cm. Second, 30 inches is the bottom of the standard band — the standard living-room mount, the height every shop stocks first. And third, the bands are a guide, not a rule: the right height depends on how high you sit, how big the screen is and whether the TV is above a fireplace — all listed in Accuracy & limitations.
The worked example, line by line
Setup: height 30 inches.
Line 1 — the conversion. 30 × 2.54 = 76.20 cm.
Line 2 — the band. 30 inches sits between 30 and 36, so the type is standard TV mount.
Line 3 — the check. At 37 inches the height is 93.98 cm and matches a high TV mount; and at 36.99 inches it is 93.95 cm and matches no standard type.
Every branch, checked
24 in: 24 in = 60.96 cm; matches low TV mount (1 type) — 24 inches is the bottom of the low band.
28 in: 28 in = 71.12 cm; matches low TV mount (1 type) — 28 inches is inside the low band.
32 in: 32 in = 81.28 cm; matches standard TV mount (1 type) — 32 inches is inside the standard band.
36 in: 36 in = 91.44 cm; matches standard TV mount (1 type) — 36 inches is the top of the standard band.
40 in: 40 in = 101.60 cm; matches high TV mount (1 type) — 40 inches is inside the high band.
42 in: 42 in = 106.68 cm; matches high TV mount (1 type) — 42 inches is the top of the high band.
Centimetre bars — 26 in, 34 in, 44 in: 26 in: 66.04 cm — low TV mount; 34 in: 86.36 cm — standard TV mount; 44 in: 111.76 cm — matches no standard type — 26 inches is low, 34 inches is standard, 44 inches matches no standard type.
The reverses, worked backwards
Smallest height for the cm figure to reach 80.00 cm: At the displayed 31.50 in the figures are 31.50 in = 80.01 cm (unrounded 80.0100 cm); matches standard TV mount (1 type). At 31.50 inches the centimetres are 80.01 cm (unrounded 80.0100 cm) — above 80.00. At 31.49 inches the centimetres are 79.98 cm (unrounded 79.9846 cm) — below 80.00 — so 31.50 inches is the smallest height for the cm figure to reach 80.00 cm.
Largest height for the cm figure to STAY at or below 90.00 cm: At the displayed 35.43 in the figures are 35.43 in = 89.99 cm (unrounded 89.9922 cm); matches standard TV mount (1 type). At 35.43 inches the centimetres are 89.99 cm (unrounded 89.9922 cm) — below 90.00. At 35.44 inches the centimetres are 90.02 cm (unrounded 90.0176 cm) — above 90.00 — so 35.43 inches is the largest height for the cm figure to stay at or below 90.00 cm.
Smallest height to match a standard TV mount: At the displayed 30.00 in the figures are 30 in = 76.20 cm (unrounded 76.2000 cm); matches standard TV mount (1 type). At 30 inches the height is 76.20 cm and matches a standard TV mount. At 29.99 inches the height is 76.17 cm (unrounded 76.1746 cm) and matches no standard type — so 30.00 inches is the smallest height to match a standard TV mount.
Smallest height for the cm figure to reach 100.00 cm: At the displayed 39.38 in the figures are 39.38 in = 100.03 cm (unrounded 100.0252 cm); matches high TV mount (1 type). At 39.38 inches the centimetres are 100.03 cm (unrounded 100.0252 cm) — above 100.00. At 39.37 inches the centimetres are 100.00 cm (unrounded 99.9998 cm) — below 100.00 — so 39.38 inches is the smallest height for the cm figure to reach 100.00 cm.
Largest height for the cm figure to STAY at or below 110.00 cm: At the displayed 43.30 in the figures are 43.30 in = 109.98 cm (unrounded 109.9820 cm); matches no standard type. At 43.30 inches the centimetres are 109.98 cm (unrounded 109.9820 cm) — below 110.00. At 43.31 inches the centimetres are 110.01 cm (unrounded 110.0074 cm) — above 110.00 — so 43.30 inches is the largest height for the cm figure to stay at or below 110.00 cm.
Smallest height to match a high TV mount: At the displayed 37.00 in the figures are 37 in = 93.98 cm (unrounded 93.9800 cm); matches high TV mount (1 type). At 37 inches the height is 93.98 cm and matches a high TV mount. At 36.99 inches the height is 93.95 cm (unrounded 93.9546 cm) and matches no standard type — so 37.00 inches is the smallest height to match a high TV mount.
A note on the bands: the bands are closed at both ends, so 30 inches is standard and 36 inches is standard, and 37 inches is high and 42 inches is high — but 29.99 inches matches no standard type and 36.99 inches matches no standard type, because the gaps between the bands are real: 29.01 to 29.99 inches and 36.01 to 36.99 inches match nothing. The reverses that ask for a centimetre target are step reverses too: 31.49 inches gives 79.98 cm and 31.50 inches gives 80.01 cm, so there is no height that gives exactly 80.00 cm — the smallest height that reaches it is 31.50 inches.

Who uses this
- The homeowner hanging a new TV: they learn a standard mount hangs 30 inches above the floor — 76.20 cm — and they check the 37-inch reverse to see where the high band starts.
- The renter checking a landlord’s mount: they learn 42 inches is the top of the high band — and they check the 43-inch edge to see that one inch higher matches no standard type.
- The shopper comparing mounts: they learn every height from 24 to 46 inches in the table — and they check the 31.50-inch reverse to see the smallest height that reaches 80.00 cm.
- The DIYer above a fireplace: they learn a high mount is 37 to 42 inches — and they check the 36.99-inch edge to see that half an inch lower matches no standard type.
Accuracy & limitations
The math is first-principles: the centimetres are the inches times 2.54, displayed to two decimals, and the bands are low 24 to 29 inches, standard 30 to 36 inches and high 37 to 42 inches — closed at both ends. At 0 inches the height is 0.00 cm and matches no standard type. At −5 inches the height is floored to 0.00 cm and matches no standard type — the calculator never shows a negative height. At 29.50 inches the height is 74.93 cm and matches no standard type — the gap between low and standard. At 36.50 inches the height is 92.71 cm and matches no standard type — the gap between standard and high. At 43 inches the height is 109.22 cm and matches no standard type — above the high band. What the model cannot do is tell you the right height for your room: the bands are where most living rooms land, but the right height depends on how high you sit, how big the screen is and whether the TV is above a fireplace — a TV above a fireplace sits higher than a TV on a plain wall, and a big screen sits lower than a small one at the same eye level. The model measures the bottom edge of the TV above the floor — not the centre of the screen, not the top of the mount — so measure from the bottom edge, or the comparison is wrong before it starts. Use it to see which band your height falls in — then sit where you will watch and check the height with your own eyes before you drill.

Frequently asked questions
How high should a TV mount be?
30 inches above the floor for a standard mount. A standard TV mount hangs 30 inches above the floor — 76.20 cm from the bottom edge of the TV to the floor. The standard band is 30 to 36 inches.
How high is a TV mount in cm?
30 inches is 76.20 cm. The centimetres are the inches times 2.54: 24 inches is 60.96 cm, 30 inches is 76.20 cm, 36 inches is 91.44 cm, 42 inches is 106.68 cm and 46 inches is 116.84 cm.
What are the TV mount height bands?
Low 24 to 29 inches, standard 30 to 36 inches, high 37 to 42 inches. The bands are closed at both ends, so 30 inches is standard and 36 inches is standard, and 37 inches is high and 42 inches is high. The gaps — 29.01 to 29.99 and 36.01 to 36.99 inches — match no standard type.
Is 29.99 inches a standard TV mount height?
No. At 29.99 inches the height is 76.17 cm and matches no standard type — the standard band starts at 30.00 inches. The gaps between the bands are real.
How high can a TV mount go?
42 inches is the top of the high band. At 42 inches the height is 106.68 cm and matches a high TV mount. At 43 inches the height is 109.22 cm and matches no standard type — above the high band, too high to watch comfortably.
What height reaches 80 cm?
31.50 inches. The smallest height for the cm figure to reach 80.00 cm is 31.50 inches, which gives 80.01 cm. At 31.49 inches the figure is 79.98 cm — below 80.00.
