Social Security Tax Calculator: How Much Is Taxable?

On the defaults — a single filer with $24,000.00 of benefits and $20,000.00 of other income — $3,500.00 of your Social Security is taxable, the federal tax is $770.00, and $23,230.00 of your benefits stay after tax. Put in your filing status, your annual Social Security benefits, your other income, your tax-exempt interest, and your marginal tax rate, and the calculator works out your provisional income, how much of your benefits is taxable, the federal tax, and what is left after tax — with the thresholds from IRS Publication 915.

Social Security tax calculator

Social Security benefits are not all tax-free: how much is taxable depends on your provisional income — your other income plus tax-exempt interest plus half your benefits — against thresholds that have not moved since 1993. Put in your filing status, benefits, other income, tax-exempt interest, and marginal tax rate, and the calculator works out your provisional income, the taxable part of your benefits, the federal tax, and what is left after tax.

Your filing status — it sets the thresholds: single $25,000/$34,000, married filing jointly $32,000/$44,000, married filing separately $0/$0 if you lived with your spouse at any time. The default is single.

Your total annual Social Security benefits — $2,000 a month is $24,000 a year. The default is $24,000.

Your other income: wages, pensions, IRA withdrawals, and anything else in adjusted gross income except Social Security. The default is $20,000.

Tax-exempt interest, usually from municipal bonds — it counts in provisional income even though it is not taxed itself. The default is $0.

Your marginal tax rate, as a percent — the tax on your benefits is the taxable part times this rate. The default is 22%.

Single, benefits $24,000.00, other income $20,000.00, tax-exempt interest $0.00, tax 22.00%: provisional income $32,000.00, taxable $3,500.00, tax $770.00, after-tax benefits $23,230.00, taxable share 14.58%, effective rate 3.21%Single, benefits $24,000.00, other income $20,000.00, tax-exempt interest $0.00, tax 22.00%: provisional income $32,000.00, taxable $3,500.00, tax $770.00, after-tax benefits $23,230.00, taxable share 14.58%, effective rate 3.21%Single, benefits $24,000.00, other income $20,000.00, tax-exempt interest $0.00, tax 22.00%: provisional income $32,000.00, taxable $3,500.00, tax $770.00, after-tax benefits $23,230.00, taxable share 14.58%, effective rate 3.21%. Provisional income is other income plus tax-exempt interest plus half your Social Security benefits. At or below the first threshold ($25,000 single, $32,000 married filing jointly) nothing is taxable; between the thresholds 50% of the excess is taxable; above the second threshold ($34,000 single, $44,000 married filing jointly) the 85% formula applies, capped at 85% of benefits. The thresholds are NOT indexed for inflation — they have been fixed since 1993. Rounding convention: totals are computed from unrounded values, so rounded parts may differ by a cent from their rounded sum.

How your Social Security tax is worked out

On the defaults — single, $24,000.00 of benefits, $20,000.00 of other income, $0.00 of tax-exempt interest, and a 22% marginal tax rate — the provisional income is $32,000.00, the taxable part of your benefits is $3,500.00 (14.58% of your benefits), the federal tax is $770.00 ($64.17 a month), the after-tax benefits are $23,230.00, and the effective tax rate on your benefits is 3.21%. The whole calculation is four moves: add up your provisional income, find your thresholds, apply the three-band rule, and multiply the taxable part by your marginal rate.

Five things about the model are worth stating plainly. First, provisional income is your adjusted gross income excluding Social Security, plus tax-exempt interest, plus half your Social Security benefits — the tax-exempt interest is the part most people miss. Second, the thresholds are $25,000 / $34,000 for single filers and $32,000 / $44,000 for married couples filing jointly, and $0 / $0 for married filing separately if you lived with your spouse at any time during the year — if you lived apart all year, you use the single thresholds. Third, the thresholds are not indexed for inflation — they have been fixed since 1993 (1994 for the 85% tier), so more retirees cross them every year as benefits and other income rise. Fourth, the taxable amount is capped at 85% of your benefits, so no matter how high your income goes, 15% of your benefits stays untaxed. And fifth, the tax is the taxable part times your marginal rate — the rate never changes how much is taxable, only what the taxable part costs. The rules are from IRS Publication 915 / SSA.

The worked example, line by line

Setup: single, $24,000.00 of annual Social Security benefits, $20,000.00 of other income, $0.00 of tax-exempt interest, 22% marginal tax rate.

Line 1 — add up your provisional income. Provisional income is $20,000.00 + $0.00 + half of $24,000.00 ($12,000.00) = $32,000.00.

Line 2 — find your thresholds. Single filers use $25,000.00 and $34,000.00. Provisional income of $32,000.00 sits between them, in the 50% band.

Line 3 — apply the three-band rule. In the middle band the taxable amount is 50% of the excess over the first threshold, capped at 50% of benefits: 50% × ($32,000.00 − $25,000.00) = 50% × $7,000.00 = $3,500.00, under the $12,000.00 cap.

Line 4 — multiply by your marginal rate. The federal tax is $3,500.00 × 22% = $770.00 a year, or $64.17 a month.

Line 5 — subtract the tax from your benefits. The after-tax benefits are $24,000.00 − $770.00 = $23,230.00. The taxable share is $3,500.00 ÷ $24,000.00 = 14.58%, and the effective rate on your benefits is $770.00 ÷ $24,000.00 = 3.21%. Rounding convention: totals are computed from unrounded values, so rounded parts may differ by a cent from their rounded sum.

Every branch, checked

Married filing jointly: Married filing jointly, benefits $24,000.00, other income $20,000.00, tax-exempt interest $0.00, tax 22.00%: provisional income $32,000.00, taxable $0.00, tax $0.00, after-tax benefits $24,000.00, taxable share 0.00%, effective rate 0.00% — the same income, married — the higher thresholds wipe the tax out entirely, because $32,000.00 of provisional income is exactly at the married first threshold, so nothing is taxable.

Other income $40,000: Single, benefits $24,000.00, other income $40,000.00, tax-exempt interest $0.00, tax 22.00%: provisional income $52,000.00, taxable $19,800.00, tax $4,356.00, after-tax benefits $19,644.00, taxable share 82.50%, effective rate 18.15% — another $20,000.00 of other income pushes provisional income to $52,000.00, deep into the 85% band, and the tax jumps from $770.00 to $4,356.00 — the tax grows much faster than the income.

Benefits $48,000: Single, benefits $48,000.00, other income $20,000.00, tax-exempt interest $0.00, tax 22.00%: provisional income $44,000.00, taxable $13,000.00, tax $2,860.00, after-tax benefits $45,140.00, taxable share 27.08%, effective rate 5.96% — doubling the benefits lifts provisional income to $44,000.00 and the taxable amount to $13,000.00 — bigger benefits mean more of them are taxable, not just more tax.

Tax-exempt interest $10,000: Single, benefits $24,000.00, other income $20,000.00, tax-exempt interest $10,000.00, tax 22.00%: provisional income $42,000.00, taxable $11,300.00, tax $2,486.00, after-tax benefits $21,514.00, taxable share 47.08%, effective rate 10.36% — municipal-bond interest counts in provisional income even though it is not taxed itself — $10,000.00 of it lifts the tax from $770.00 to $2,486.00, the most common surprise in this calculation.

Marginal rate 12%: Single, benefits $24,000.00, other income $20,000.00, tax-exempt interest $0.00, tax 12.00%: provisional income $32,000.00, taxable $3,500.00, tax $420.00, after-tax benefits $23,580.00, taxable share 14.58%, effective rate 1.75% — the rate never changes how much is taxable — it only changes the tax, from $770.00 to $420.00 on the same $3,500.00.

Other income $0: Single, benefits $24,000.00, other income $0.00, tax-exempt interest $0.00, tax 22.00%: provisional income $12,000.00, taxable $0.00, tax $0.00, after-tax benefits $24,000.00, taxable share 0.00%, effective rate 0.00% — with no other income the provisional income is only $12,000.00, under the $25,000.00 threshold, so nothing is taxable at all.

Married filing separately, lived with spouse: Married filing separately (lived with spouse), benefits $24,000.00, other income $20,000.00, tax-exempt interest $0.00, tax 22.00%: provisional income $32,000.00, taxable $20,400.00, tax $4,488.00, after-tax benefits $19,512.00, taxable share 85.00%, effective rate 18.70% — filing separately while living together uses $0 / $0 thresholds, so the full 85% cap applies at once — $20,400.00 taxable and $4,488.00 of tax on the same numbers that give a married couple filing jointly $0.00.

The reverses, worked backwards

Other income for $10,000 taxable: $28,470.59 — the exact other income is $28470.5882. At $28,470.59 the taxable amount is $10,000.00 (the unrounded forward is $10,000.0015, which rounds to exactly $10,000.00). $28,470.58 gives $9,999.99; $28,470.60 gives $10,000.01. The star is DOLLARS.

Marginal rate for $1,000 of tax on the $3,500 taxable: 28.57% — the exact rate is 28.5714%. At the displayed 28.57% the tax is $999.95, which does NOT land exactly on $1,000.00 — that is correct under the continuous convention, because the displayed value is rounded to two decimals. 28.58% gives $1,000.30. The star is a PERCENT.

Other income at which tax first bites: $13,001.00 — the smallest other income that produces any tax. At $13,001.00 the provisional income is $25,001.00 and the taxable amount is $0.50; $13,000.00 gives $0.00. This is a step reverse: other income comes in whole dollars, so there is no exact in-between. The star is DOLLARS.

Other income for taxable = $20,400 (the 85% cap): $40,705.88 — the exact other income is $40705.8824. At $40,705.88 the taxable amount is $20,400.00 (exact); $40,706.00 gives $20,400.00 as well — the cap holds, so more income cannot raise the taxable amount past 85% of benefits. The star is DOLLARS.

Tax-exempt interest for $5,000 taxable: $2,588.24 — the exact interest is $2588.2353. At $2,588.24 the taxable amount is $5,000.00. The star is DOLLARS.

Benefits for $8,000 taxable (other income $20,000): $36,235.29 — the exact benefits are $36235.2941. At $36,235.29 the provisional income is $38,117.65 and the taxable amount is $8,000.00 (exact to the cent). The star is DOLLARS.

What the defaults assume

The defaults are single, benefits $24,000.00, other income $20,000.00, tax-exempt interest $0.00, tax 22.00% — provisional income $32,000.00, taxable $3,500.00, tax $770.00, after-tax benefits $23,230.00. With $0 benefits, Single, benefits $0.00, other income $20,000.00, tax-exempt interest $0.00, tax 22.00%: provisional income $20,000.00, taxable $0.00, tax $0.00, after-tax benefits $0.00, taxable share 0.00%, effective rate 0.00% — there is nothing to tax. With $100,000 of other income, Single, benefits $24,000.00, other income $100,000.00, tax-exempt interest $0.00, tax 22.00%: provisional income $112,000.00, taxable $20,400.00, tax $4,488.00, after-tax benefits $19,512.00, taxable share 85.00%, effective rate 18.70% — the 85% cap binds, so the taxable amount stops at $20,400.00 no matter how much more income you add. With provisional income exactly $34,000, Single, benefits $24,000.00, other income $22,000.00, tax-exempt interest $0.00, tax 22.00%: provisional income $34,000.00, taxable $4,500.00, tax $990.00, after-tax benefits $23,010.00, taxable share 18.75%, effective rate 4.13% — right at the top of the 50% band. With married filing jointly and provisional income exactly $44,000, Married filing jointly, benefits $24,000.00, other income $32,000.00, tax-exempt interest $0.00, tax 22.00%: provisional income $44,000.00, taxable $6,000.00, tax $1,320.00, after-tax benefits $22,680.00, taxable share 25.00%, effective rate 5.50% — right at the top of the married 50% band. Who uses this

  • The retiree on $24,000 of benefits and $20,000 of other income: they learn $3,500.00 of their benefits is taxable and the tax is $770.00 — and they check the $13,001.00 step to see how much more income they can take before any tax bites at all.
  • The married couple on the same numbers: they learn filing jointly wipes the tax out to $0.00, while filing separately while living together pushes it to $20,400.00 taxable — and they check the married thresholds before choosing how to file.
  • The municipal-bond holder: they learn $10,000.00 of tax-exempt interest lifts the tax from $770.00 to $2,486.00 — and they check the $2,588.24 reverse to see how little tax-exempt interest it takes to reach $5,000.00 of taxable benefits.
  • The high earner on $100,000 of other income: they learn the taxable amount stops at $20,400.00 — the 85% cap — and the tax stops at $4,488.00, no matter how much more income they add.

Accuracy & limitations

The math is first-principles: provisional income is other income plus tax-exempt interest plus half your Social Security benefits; the taxable amount follows the three-band rule from IRS Publication 915 (nothing below the first threshold; 50% of the excess over the first threshold up to the second, capped at 50% of benefits; above the second threshold, 85% of the excess plus the smaller of 50% of the gap between thresholds and 50% of benefits, capped at 85% of benefits); the federal tax is the taxable amount times your marginal rate; the after-tax benefits are the benefits minus the tax. Every figure is rounded to cents half-up, and the totals are computed from unrounded values, so rounded parts may differ by a cent from their rounded sum. What the model cannot do is tell you what YOUR tax bill will be: it uses a single marginal rate, while real tax is computed on your whole return with the standard deduction, other income, credits, and state taxes; it does NOT model the taxation of benefits for married couples filing separately who lived apart all year beyond the single thresholds; it does NOT model the earnings test, which is a different rule that withholds benefits before retirement age; and it does NOT model state taxation of Social Security, which varies by state. The thresholds are the 2026 figures from IRS Publication 915 / SSA — they have not been indexed for inflation since 1993. Use it to size the tax on your benefits, then check your full return before you file.

Frequently asked questions

How much of my Social Security is taxable?

It depends on your provisional income. On the defaults — a single filer with $24,000.00 of benefits and $20,000.00 of other income — $3,500.00 of benefits are taxable, which is 14.58% of the benefits. At or below the first threshold ($25,000.00 single) nothing is taxable; above the second threshold ($34,000.00 single) up to 85% of your benefits can be taxable.

What is provisional income?

Your other income plus tax-exempt interest plus half your Social Security benefits. On the defaults that is $20,000.00 + $0.00 + $12,000.00 = $32,000.00. Tax-exempt interest counts even though it is not taxed itself — that is the part most people miss.

Does tax-exempt interest really count?

Yes — it counts in provisional income. $10,000.00 of municipal-bond interest lifts the tax on the defaults from $770.00 to $2,486.00, because it pushes provisional income from $32,000.00 to $42,000.00. Only $2,588.24 of tax-exempt interest is enough to make $5,000.00 of benefits taxable.

Do the thresholds rise with inflation?

No — they have been fixed since 1993 (1994 for the 85% tier). The single thresholds are still $25,000.00 and $34,000.00, and the married thresholds are still $32,000.00 and $44,000.00. As benefits and other income rise with inflation, more retirees cross them every year.

What if I file separately from my spouse?

It depends on whether you lived together. If you lived with your spouse at any time during the year, the thresholds are $0 / $0, so the 85% cap applies at once — $20,400.00 taxable and $4,488.00 of tax on the defaults. If you lived apart all year, you use the single thresholds instead.

How much other income can I have before any tax bites?

$13,000.00 on the defaults. At $13,000.00 of other income the provisional income is exactly $25,000.00 and the taxable amount is $0.00; $13,001.00 of other income gives $0.50 of taxable benefits. Every dollar of other income above that starts to be taxed at 50% of the excess.

What is the most of my benefits that can be taxed?

85% of your benefits. On $24,000.00 of benefits that is $20,400.00. Once your provisional income is high enough — $40,705.88 of other income on the defaults — the taxable amount stops rising no matter how much more income you add.

How much tax will I actually pay on my benefits?

The taxable part times your marginal rate. On the defaults $3,500.00 × 22% = $770.00 a year. At a 12% rate it is $420.00. The rate never changes how much is taxable — only what the taxable part costs — and your real bill depends on your whole return, including the standard deduction and other income.
