REFERENCE TABLE · MONEY · SOCIAL SECURITY
Your Social Security payment date is not random — it is a fixed rule from your birth date. Born on the 1st–10th: the second Wednesday. 11th–20th: the third Wednesday. 21st–31st: the fourth Wednesday. Two groups break the rule: benefits started before May 1997, or SSI + Social Security together — paid on the 3rd. SSI alone lands on the 1st. If the date hits a weekend or federal holiday, SSA pays on the previous business day — that is why January paid on the 2nd and October pays on the 2nd. The full 2026 table, the SSI dates, and the 2.8% COLA ($2,015 → $2,071.42 average) are below.
Retirement, survivors, and SSDI (started after April 1997). The 3rd-of-month column covers pre-May-1997 starters and people getting both Social Security and SSI. Shifted dates are marked.
| Month | Born 1st–10th 2nd Wednesday | Born 11th–20th 3rd Wednesday | Born 21st–31st 4th Wednesday | Pre-May-1997 / dual 3rd of month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | Jan 14 | Jan 21 | Jan 28 | Jan 2 ← shifted from the 3rd (weekend/holiday) |
| February | Feb 11 | Feb 18 | Feb 25 | Feb 3 |
| March | Mar 11 | Mar 18 | Mar 25 | Mar 3 |
| April | Apr 8 | Apr 15 | Apr 22 | Apr 3 |
| May | May 13 | May 20 | May 27 | May 1 ← shifted from the 3rd (weekend/holiday) |
| June | Jun 10 | Jun 17 | Jun 24 | Jun 3 |
| July | Jul 8 | Jul 15 | Jul 22 | Jul 2 ← shifted from the 3rd (weekend/holiday) |
| August | Aug 12 | Aug 19 | Aug 26 | Aug 3 |
| September | Sep 9 | Sep 16 | Sep 23 | Sep 3 |
| October | Oct 14 | Oct 21 | Oct 28 | Oct 2 ← shifted from the 3rd (weekend/holiday) |
| November | Nov 11 | Nov 18 | Nov 25 | Nov 3 |
| December | Dec 9 | Dec 16 | Dec 23 | Dec 3 |
SSI pays on the 1st — or the prior business day when the 1st is a weekend or holiday. That is why some months show two checks: the second one is next month’s, paid early. It is a shift, not a bonus.

SSI runs on its own clock — the 1st, shifted by weekends and holidays.
The 2026 cost-of-living adjustment, applied to your current benefit.
Your birth date picks your Wednesday; holidays move it earlier. Born on the 15th? You are paid on the third Wednesday of every month — October 21, 2026. The 2026 COLA is 2.8% (announced October 24, 2025): the average retired-worker benefit rose about $56/month, from $2,015 to $2,071; SSI’s first 2026 check landed December 31, 2025. If you started benefits before May 1997 or get both Social Security and SSI, ignore the Wednesdays — you are paid on the 3rd (shifted when it hits a weekend or holiday: January 2, May 1, July 2, October 2 in 2026). And two SSI checks in one month are a calendar shift, not a bonus — the next month gets none.
| Output | Formula | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Your Wednesday group | birth day 1–10 → 2nd Wed; 11–20 → 3rd Wed; 21–31 → 4th Wed | Third Wednesday for the default day 15 — SSA’s fixed staggering since 1997. |
| Next payment date | first group-Wednesday on or after today (or 3rd, shifted back if weekend/holiday) | The actual date your next deposit is scheduled — weekends and federal holidays shift it earlier. |
| COLA raise | current benefit × 1.028 | $2,071.42 for the default $2,015 — +$56.42/month, +$677.04/year. |
Dates follow SSA’s published 2026 payment schedule and weekend/holiday shift rules, verified this run against SSA-derived reporting (Chase, USA Today, SSA announcements). Banks post direct deposits on the scheduled date — your bank may show it a day early or late. The COLA applies to the gross benefit; Medicare Part B ($185.00/month in 2026, up from $174.70) is deducted for most enrollees, so the net deposit rises less. Individual dates can also move for overpayment withholding or payment-center issues — your my Social Security account shows your exact date. Not financial advice.
Bright Side Kit. "2026 Social Security Payment Schedule." https://brightoolbox.com/2026-social-security-payment-schedule/ Accessed October 23, 2026.It depends on your birth date: the 1st–10th are paid the second Wednesday, the 11th–20th the third Wednesday, and the 21st–31st the fourth Wednesday of each month. For example, someone born on the 15th is paid October 21, 2026. If you started benefits before May 1997 or get both SSI and Social Security, you are paid on the 3rd instead.
2.8%, announced October 24, 2025. It raised the average retired-worker benefit by about $56/month — from $2,015 to $2,071. The increase showed up in January 2026 checks (SSI saw it December 31, 2025). The 2026 maximum at full retirement age 70 is $5,180/month.
That is a calendar shift, not a bonus. SSI pays on the 1st; when the 1st falls on a weekend or holiday, the check goes out on the prior business day — so December 2026 has checks on Dec 1 and Dec 31 (the second is January 2027’s), and July 2026 had Jul 1 and Jul 31 (Aug 1 was a Saturday). The following month gets no check.
The most common reason is the Medicare Part B premium, which rose from $174.70 to $185.00/month in 2026 — up $10.30. Most enrollees have it deducted from their Social Security check, so the net deposit rises by roughly $45–$50, not the full COLA amount.
First check your group’s real date — most “late” checks are just the weekend/holiday shift or a birthday-group mixup (a neighbor on the 2nd Wednesday is not your schedule). Banks can post a day early or late. If your date has truly passed, your my Social Security account shows the official payment date; SSA advises waiting three mailing days for paper checks.
Yes. The 2.8% applied to all Social Security programs: SSDI averaged about $44/month more, survivor benefits about $52/month, plus spousal, divorced-spouse, and children’s benefits — and SSI got the same 2.8% adjustment.
