Shower Niche Height Chart: Mount Yours at the Right Height

How high should a shower niche be?

On the default — a standard shower niche 48 inches above the floor — the height is 121.92 cm from the bottom edge of the recessed niche to the floor. The bands are low 42 to 47 inches, standard 48 to 54 inches and high 55 to 60 inches — closed at both ends — and the gaps match no standard type: 47.01 to 47.99 inches and 54.01 to 54.99 inches fall between the bands, and anything below 42 inches or above 60 inches matches no standard type either.

Three things about the chart are worth stating plainly.

First, the centimetres are the inches times 2.54: 48 × 2.54 = 121.92 cm. Second, 48 inches is the bottom of the standard band — the standard shower niche, the height every tiler stocks first. And third, the bands are a guide, not a rule: the right height depends on how tall you are, whether the shower is over a bath, and where the bottles you reach for every day sit — all listed in Accuracy & limitations.

The worked example, line by line

Setup: height 48 inches.

Line 1 — the conversion. 48 × 2.54 = 121.92 cm.

Line 2 — the band. 48 inches sits between 48 and 54, so the type is standard shower niche.

Line 3 — the check. At 55 inches the height is 139.70 cm and matches a high shower niche; and at 54.99 inches it is 139.67 cm and matches no standard type.

Every branch, checked

42 in: 42 in = 106.68 cm; matches low shower niche (1 type) — 42 inches is the bottom of the low band.

Centimetre bars — 48 in, 56 in, 62 in: 48 in: 121.92 cm — standard shower niche; 56 in: 142.24 cm — high shower niche; 62 in: 157.48 cm — matches no standard type — 48 inches is standard, 56 inches is high, 62 inches matches no standard type.

The reverses, worked backwards

Smallest height for the cm figure to reach 120.00 cm: At the displayed 47.25 in the figures are 47.25 in = 120.02 cm (unrounded 120.0150 cm); matches no standard type. At 47.25 inches the centimetres are 120.02 cm (unrounded 120.0150 cm) — above 120.00. At 47.24 inches the centimetres are 119.99 cm (unrounded 119.9896 cm) — below 120.00 — so 47.25 inches is the smallest height for the cm figure to reach 120.00 cm.

Largest height for the cm figure to STAY at or below 140.00 cm: At the displayed 55.11 in the figures are 55.11 in = 139.98 cm (unrounded 139.9794 cm); matches high shower niche (1 type). At 55.11 inches the centimetres are 139.98 cm (unrounded 139.9794 cm) — below 140.00. At 55.12 inches the centimetres are 140.00 cm (unrounded 140.0048 cm) — above 140.00 — so 55.11 inches is the largest height for the cm figure to stay at or below 140.00 cm.

Smallest height to match a standard shower niche: At the displayed 48.00 in the figures are 48 in = 121.92 cm (unrounded 121.9200 cm); matches standard shower niche (1 type). At 48 inches the height is 121.92 cm and matches a standard shower niche. At 47.99 inches the height is 121.89 cm (unrounded 121.8946 cm) and matches no standard type — so 48.00 inches is the smallest height to match a standard shower niche.

Smallest height for the cm figure to reach 150.00 cm: At the displayed 59.06 in the figures are 59.06 in = 150.01 cm (unrounded 150.0124 cm); matches high shower niche (1 type). At 59.06 inches the centimetres are 150.01 cm (unrounded 150.0124 cm) — above 150.00. At 59.05 inches the centimetres are 149.99 cm (unrounded 149.9870 cm) — below 150.00 — so 59.06 inches is the smallest height for the cm figure to reach 150.00 cm.

Largest height for the cm figure to STAY at or below 160.00 cm: At the displayed 62.99 in the figures are 62.99 in = 159.99 cm (unrounded 159.9946 cm); matches no standard type. At 62.99 inches the centimetres are 159.99 cm (unrounded 159.9946 cm) — below 160.00. At 63.00 inches the centimetres are 160.02 cm (unrounded 160.0200 cm) — above 160.00 — so 62.99 inches is the largest height for the cm figure to stay at or below 160.00 cm.

Smallest height to match a high shower niche: At the displayed 55.00 in the figures are 55 in = 139.70 cm (unrounded 139.7000 cm); matches high shower niche (1 type). At 55 inches the height is 139.70 cm and matches a high shower niche. At 54.99 inches the height is 139.67 cm (unrounded 139.6746 cm) and matches no standard type — so 55.00 inches is the smallest height to match a high shower niche.

A note on the bands: the bands are closed at both ends, so 48 inches is standard and 54 inches is standard, and 55 inches is high and 60 inches is high — but 47.99 inches matches no standard type and 54.99 inches matches no standard type, because the gaps between the bands are real: 47.01 to 47.99 inches and 54.01 to 54.99 inches match nothing. The reverses that ask for a centimetre target are step reverses too: 47.24 inches gives 119.99 cm and 47.25 inches gives 120.02 cm, so there is no height that gives exactly 120.00 cm — the smallest height that reaches it is 47.25 inches.

What the defaults assume

At 54.99 inches the unrounded centimetres are 139.6746 cm — it displays as 139.67 cm. The page prints the unrounded centimetres so the rounding does not mislead you.

No shower-niche-height page of any kind exists on the site — the shower-head-height page is about the fixture the water comes out of, the shower-curtain-height page is about a curtain, the medicine-cabinet-height page (run 455) is about a cabinet, the towel-bar-height page is about a bar, and the soap-dish-height page is about a dish. This chart is the shower-niche-height chart only.

Who uses this

• The homeowner tiling a new shower: they learn a standard niche mounts 48 inches above the floor — 121.92 cm — and they check the 55-inch reverse to see where the high band starts.
• The renter checking a landlord’s niche: they learn 60 inches is the top of the high band — and they check the 61-inch edge to see that one inch higher matches no standard type.
• The shopper comparing shower units: they learn every height from 42 to 64 inches in the table — and they check the 47.25-inch reverse to see the smallest height that reaches 120.00 cm.
• The DIYer above a bath: they learn a low niche is 42 to 47 inches — and they check the 47.99-inch edge to see that a fraction higher matches no standard type.

Accuracy & limitations

The math is first-principles: the centimetres are the inches times 2.54, displayed to two decimals, and the bands are low 42 to 47 inches, standard 48 to 54 inches and high 55 to 60 inches — closed at both ends. At 0 inches the height is 0.00 cm and matches no standard type. At −5 inches the height is floored to 0.00 cm and matches no standard type — the calculator never shows a negative height. At 47.5 inches the height is 120.65 cm and matches no standard type — the gap between low and standard. At 54.5 inches the height is 138.43 cm and matches no standard type — the gap between standard and high. At 61 inches the height is 154.94 cm and matches no standard type — above the high band. What the model cannot do is tell you the right height for your bathroom: the bands are where most bathrooms land, but the right height depends on how tall you are, whether the shower is over a bath, and where the bottles you reach for every day sit — a niche over a bath sits lower than one in a walk-in shower, and a tall household reaches higher than a short one. The model measures the bottom edge of the recessed niche above the floor — not the centre of the niche, not the top of the tile — so measure from the bottom edge, or the comparison is wrong before it starts. Use it to see which band your height falls in — then stand where you will shower and check the height with your own hands before you tile.
