Shower Curtain Height Chart: Hang It at the Right Height

What is the standard shower curtain height?

On the default — 72 inches — the height is 182.88 cm, which matches a standard shower curtain. Low shower curtains run 60–66 inches, standard shower curtains run 68–74 inches, and high shower curtains run 76–82 inches. The standard shower curtain height is 68–74 inches — about 172.72–187.96 cm — hanging from a rod above the bath, with the bottom edge inside the bath, about 1–2 inches below the rim. A shower curtain at 60 inches is a low mount for a stall shower; a shower curtain at 82 inches is the tallest high shower curtain.

Three things about the model are worth stating plainly.

First, 72 inches is 72 × 2.54 = 182.88 cm. Second, 72 inches falls in the 68–74 inch range, so it matches a standard shower curtain. And third, the ranges are CLOSED — 60–66, 68–74 and 76–82 inches — so a height of 67 inches matches no standard type; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.

The worked example, line by line

Setup: 72 inches.

Line 1 — the centimetres. The height is 72 × 2.54 = 182.88 cm.

Line 2 — the shower curtain type. 72 inches falls in the 68–74 inch range, so it matches a standard shower curtain.

Line 3 — the check. 182.88 cm ÷ 2.54 = 72 inches, the height; and a standard shower curtain is 68–74 inches, so 72 inches falls inside the standard range.

A warning about the neighbours: every neighbour above sits one hundredth of an inch from the star — 0.01 inches is about 0.025 cm. A shower curtain hung a hair too low misses the range. The page prints the unrounded values so the rounding does not mislead you: 150.0124, 149.9870, 169.9768, 170.0022, 172.6946, 180.0098, 179.9844, 189.9920, 190.0174 and 193.0146.

What the defaults assume

The default is 72 inches — 72 in = 182.88 cm; matches standard shower curtain (1 type). With 60 inches, 60 in = 152.40 cm; matches low shower curtain (1 type). With 66 inches, 66 in = 167.64 cm; matches low shower curtain (1 type). With 68 inches, 68 in = 172.72 cm; matches standard shower curtain (1 type). With 72 inches, 72 in = 182.88 cm; matches standard shower curtain (1 type). With 74 inches, 74 in = 187.96 cm; matches standard shower curtain (1 type). With 76 inches, 76 in = 193.04 cm; matches high shower curtain (1 type). With Centimetre bars, 60 in: 152.40 cm — low shower curtain; 72 in: 182.88 cm — standard shower curtain; 82 in: 208.28 cm — high shower curtain. With Height 0, 0 in = 0.00 cm; matches no standard type. With Height 59.06, 59.06 in = 150.01 cm; matches no standard type (unrounded 150.0124 cm — below the low band, so it matches no standard type). With Height 78.74, 78.74 in = 200.00 cm; matches high shower curtain (1 type) (unrounded 199.9996 cm — displays 200.00 cm but is below 200.00 cm). With Height 66.93, 66.93 in = 170.00 cm; matches no standard type (unrounded 170.0022 cm — displays 170.00 cm but is above 170.00 cm). With Height 72, 72 in = 182.88 cm; matches standard shower curtain (1 type). With Height 82, 82 in = 208.28 cm; matches high shower curtain (1 type). With Centimetre bars, 60 in: 152.40 cm — low shower curtain; 72 in: 182.88 cm — standard shower curtain; 82 in: 208.28 cm — high shower curtain.

A note on the rounding: with a height of 78.74 inches the unrounded height is 199.9996 cm, which rounds half-up to 200.00 cm — but it is still below the 200.00 cm line. With a height of 66.93 inches the unrounded height is 170.0022 cm, which rounds half-up to 170.00 cm — but it is just above the 170.00 cm line. The page prints the unrounded values so the rounding does not mislead you.

Accuracy & limitations

The math is first-principles: the height in centimetres is the height in inches × 2.54, exactly; the shower curtain type is a closed-range match — low shower curtains run 60–66 inches, standard shower curtains run 68–74 inches, and high shower curtains run 76–82 inches — and the heights between the ranges match no standard type — all rounded to two decimals half-up. The reverses are judged on the UNROUNDED centimetre figure: a neighbour one hundredth of an inch short shows as the target when rounded to two decimals, but its unrounded centimetre figure is below the target, so it does not meet the bar — the page prints the unrounded value in full. Negative heights are floored to zero: a height of −5 inches is treated as 0 inches, because a shower curtain cannot hang below the floor. What the model cannot do is hang your shower curtain: heights are measured from the finished floor to the curtain’s bottom edge, in inches and centimetres; the rod usually sits 72–75 inches above the floor, so a standard 72-inch curtain hangs from the rod to just inside the bath; the curtain’s bottom edge should sit inside the bath, about 1–2 inches below the rim — too short and the water runs onto the floor, too long and the curtain bunches on the bath floor and mildews; rings and hooks add 1–2 inches of drop, so measure from the rod, not from the hooks; the liner is the hidden half — a liner 1–2 inches shorter than the curtain keeps the water in while the curtain stays dry on the outside; a curtain that brushes the bath floor collects soap scum along its hem — trim it or raise the rod a notch. The chart is a guide, not a rule — hang the curtain where the water stays in the bath.
