Return on Investment (ROI) Calculator: Total & Annualized

On the defaults — $10,000 invested for 3 years and now worth $13,000 — the profit is $3,000.00, the return on investment is 30.00% and the annualized ROI is 9.14% a year. Put in your own initial investment, final value and holding period, and the calculator works out your profit, your ROI and your annualized ROI — the steady yearly rate that would produce the same result, so returns over different holding periods can be compared fairly. This one finds the ROI — the gain on the money you put in, as a share of what you put in: the payback-period-calculator page is PAYBACK — how long the investment takes to pay for itself — not the percentage return; the compound-interest-calculator page is COMPOUND INTEREST — what a balance grows to at a fixed rate — not the return on what you already invested; the net-present-value-calculator page is NET PRESENT VALUE — what future cash flows are worth today — not the simple return; and the simple-interest-calculator page is SIMPLE INTEREST — interest on the principal only — not the return on the whole investment. No return-on-investment calculator of any kind exists on this site — this one is the first.

Return on investment calculator

Return on investment = (final value − initial investment) ÷ initial investment × 100; profit = final value − initial investment; annualized ROI = (final value ÷ initial investment)1 ÷ years − 1, × 100. On the defaults — $10,000 invested; $13,000 final value; 3 years; profit $3,000.00; ROI 30.00%; annualized ROI 9.14% a year. The ROI is 30.00%, the profit is $3,000.00 and the annualized ROI is 9.14% a year: the investment gained $3,000.00 on $10,000, which is 30.00% overall, and the steady yearly rate that would produce the same result over 3 years is 9.14%. The ROI, the profit and the annualized ROI are three outputs, never the same number. The ROI does NOT change when the holding period moves alone — the ROI is the gain divided by the cost, and time does not enter it: over 1 year the ROI is still 30.00%, and over 10 years it is still 30.00%. What moves with time is the annualized ROI: 30.00% over 1 year, 9.14% over 3 years, 5.39% over 5 years and 2.66% over 10 years — the same gain is worth less a year the longer it takes. When the holding period is 0 years the ROI is still 30.00% and the profit is still $3,000.00, but there is no yearly rate to annualize to — the calculator says plainly the annualized ROI is undefined, never hides it. When the final value falls below the initial investment the ROI goes negative — at $8,000 the ROI is −20.00% and the annualized ROI is −7.17% — and the calculator says so in Accuracy & limitations. A one-dollar move in the final value moves the annualized ROI by only 0.003 points, so the neighbour’s displayed figure can sit a hair from the target — the page prints the unrounded six-decimal ROI and annualized ROI in full so the rounding does not mislead you. The calculator shows all of it with notes, never hides it.

Your initial investment — what you put in, in dollars — the default is $10,000.

Your final value — what the investment is worth now, in dollars — the default is $13,000.

Your holding period — how many years you held the investment — the default is 3.

What does a 30.00% ROI mean?

It means the investment gained $3,000.00 on $10,000 put in — for every dollar invested, thirty cents came back as profit. Over 3 years that is an annualized ROI of 9.14% a year: the steady yearly rate that would turn $10,000 into $13,000 in 3 years. The ROI, the profit and the annualized ROI are three outputs, never the same number — the ROI is the gain as a share of the cost, the profit is the gain in dollars, and the annualized ROI is the gain as a yearly rate.

Three things to check before you trust the number

The holding period does not change the ROI. Over 1 year the ROI is still 30.00%, and over 10 years it is still 30.00%. The ROI is the gain divided by the cost, and time does not enter it — if changing the years changes your ROI, the formula is wrong.

The holding period is what the annualized ROI is for. The same 30.00% gain is 30.00% a year over 1 year, 9.14% a year over 3 years, 5.39% a year over 5 years and 2.66% a year over 10 years. Compare investments by their annualized ROI, never by their total ROI, when the holding periods differ.

Count every cost in the initial investment. The ROI is only honest if the initial investment includes everything you paid — fees, commissions, taxes and the cost of getting in. Leaving costs out inflates the ROI and misleads the decision.

Worked example

On the defaults: $10,000 invested; $13,000 final value; 3 years.

  1. Profit: $13,000 − $10,000 = $3,000.00.
  2. Return on investment: $3,000.00 ÷ $10,000 × 100 = 30.00%.
  3. Annualized ROI: ($13,000 ÷ $10,000)1 ÷ 3 − 1, × 100 = 9.14% a year.
  4. Smallest final value for a 25% ROI: $12,500 — at $12,500 the ROI is 25.00%, and at $12,499 it is 24.99%.
  5. Largest initial investment for a 30% ROI: $10,000 — at $10,000 the ROI is 30.00%, and at $10,001 it is 29.99%.
  6. Longest holding period for a 10% annualized ROI: 2 years — at 2 years the annualized ROI is 14.02%, and at 3 years it is 9.14%.

Every branch, checked

The reverses, worked backwards

What the defaults assume

The defaults are one investment of $10,000, now worth $13,000 after 3 years. They are a starting point, not a benchmark: a stock, a property and a marketing campaign have very different ROIs, and the right ROI for your investment is the one that beats what the money would have earned elsewhere. Change the three numbers to your own and the calculator recomputes instantly. The annualized ROI is a steady yearly rate — it is not a promise that the investment grew 9.14% every year: real investments grow unevenly, and the annualized figure smooths the path into one number.

These notes repeat in every explainer section because this page is built to be read start to finish: the defaults are one investment’s numbers, not a standard; the holding period does not change the ROI; the annualized ROI is what you compare across holding periods; and every cost belongs in the initial investment.

Accuracy & limitations

The calculator does the arithmetic exactly — the profit is the final value minus the initial investment, the ROI is the profit divided by the initial investment, and the annualized ROI is the ratio to the power of one over the years, minus one — and every figure on this page is checked against an independent model. What it cannot do is judge the investment: a 30.00% ROI over 3 years says nothing about the risk taken, the cash flows in between, or whether the money would have earned more elsewhere. It also treats the investment as one payment in and one value out — an investment with money added or taken out along the way needs a time-weighted return, not this formula. And the annualized ROI is undefined when the holding period is 0 years: with no time there is no yearly rate, and the calculator says so plainly rather than printing a number.

Return on investment = (final value − initial investment) ÷ initial investment × 100; profit = final value − initial investment; annualized ROI = (final value ÷ initial investment)1 ÷ years − 1, × 100. On the defaults — $10,000 invested, $13,000 final value, 3 years — the profit is $3,000.00, the ROI is 30.00% and the annualized ROI is 9.14% a year. Smallest final value for a 25% ROI: $12,500.00. Largest initial investment for a 30% ROI: $10,000.00. Longest holding period for a 10% annualized ROI: 2 years. Smallest final value for a $5,000 profit: $15,000.00. Largest initial investment for a $2,000 profit: $11,000.00. Smallest final value for a 12% annualized ROI over 3 years: $14,049.28. Source: Bright Side Kit, brightoolbox.com.

Frequently asked questions

What is return on investment?

Return on investment (ROI) is what you gained on an investment, as a share of what you put in — (final value − initial investment) ÷ initial investment × 100. On the defaults it is ($13,000 − $10,000) ÷ $10,000 × 100 = 30.00%.

How do I calculate ROI?

Subtract the initial investment from the final value to get the profit, then divide the profit by the initial investment and multiply by 100: $3,000.00 ÷ $10,000 × 100 = 30.00%. Put your own three numbers into the calculator above and it does the rest.

What is annualized ROI?

Annualized ROI is the steady yearly rate that would produce the same result over the holding period — (final value ÷ initial investment)1 ÷ years − 1, × 100. On the defaults it is 9.14% a year. Use it to compare investments held for different lengths of time.

What is a good ROI?

It depends on the investment — 30.00% over 3 years, or 9.14% a year, beats most savings accounts and roughly matches long-run stock market returns, but a higher ROI usually means higher risk. Compare your ROI to what the money would have earned elsewhere, at the same risk.

What if my ROI is negative?

Then the investment lost money — at $8,000 the ROI is −20.00% and the annualized ROI is −7.17% a year. A negative ROI is a loss, not a low return, and the calculator says so plainly.

Does ROI include fees and taxes?

Only if you count them — the initial investment should include everything you paid, including fees, commissions and taxes, and the final value should be what you actually keep. The payback-period-calculator page works out how long an investment takes to pay for itself.

Why is the annualized ROI lower than the ROI?

Because the ROI is the total gain and the annualized ROI spreads it over the years — 30.00% over 3 years is 9.14% a year, and the same 30.00% over 10 years is only 2.66% a year. Time dilutes the yearly rate.

What final value do I need for a 25% ROI?

With $10,000 invested, $12,500: at $12,500 the ROI is exactly 25.00%, and at $12,499 it is 24.99% — just below. The calculator’s reverse check works this out for any set of numbers.
