Emergency Fund vs Investing Calculator: Which Wins?

On the defaults — $10,000 for 5 years, nothing added each month — high-yield savings at 4.00% a year grows to $12,166.53 and investing at 7.00% a year grows to $14,025.52, so investing ends $1,858.99 ahead. Put in your own lump sum, years, savings rate, invested rate and monthly contribution, and the calculator grows the same money both ways — once in a high-yield savings account, once invested — and shows which one ends ahead, and by how much. This one is the EMERGENCY FUND vs INVESTING comparison — the same money, the same time, two homes: the emergency-fund-calculator page is the EMERGENCY FUND — how many months of expenses your fund should cover — not the growth comparison; the compound-interest-calculator page is COMPOUND INTEREST — what one balance grows to at one rate — not two balances side by side; the payoff-vs-invest-calculator page is PAY OFF DEBT vs INVEST — spare cash against a loan — not the emergency fund against the market; and the return-on-investment-calculator page is RETURN ON INVESTMENT — the gain on one investment — not the savings-versus-investing race. No emergency-fund-vs-investing comparison of any kind exists on this site — this one is the first.

Emergency fund vs investing calculator

High-yield savings value = lump sum × (1 + savings rate)years + monthly contributions at year end; invested value = lump sum × (1 + invested rate)years + the same contributions at the invested rate; invested ahead = invested value − savings value. On the defaults — $10,000 lump sum; 5 years; savings rate 4.00% a year; invested rate 7.00% a year; $0 a month; savings $12,166.53; invested $14,025.52; invested ahead by $1,858.99. The savings value is $12,166.53, the invested value is $14,025.52 and the invested value is ahead by $1,858.99: the same $10,000, the same 5 years, and the 3-point rate gap is worth $1,858.99. The savings value, the invested value and the gap are three outputs, never the same number. The gap does NOT grow in a straight line — it compounds: over 1 year the gap is $300.00, over 5 years it is $1,858.99 and over 10 years it is $4,869.07. What moves the gap is the rate difference and the time, not the lump sum alone: doubling the lump sum doubles the gap, but doubling the time more than doubles it. When the two rates are the same the gap is $0.00 — at 4.00% invested the invested value is $12,166.53, exactly the savings value — and the calculator says plainly it is a tie, never hides it. When the savings rate beats the invested rate the gap goes negative — at a 10.00% savings rate against 7.00% invested, savings wins by $2,079.58 — and the calculator says so in Accuracy & limitations. The invested figure is before taxes and before volatility: the market does not return 7.00% every year, and the savings figure is the one you can spend tomorrow — the page prints the warning so the comparison does not mislead you. The calculator shows all of it with notes, never hides it.

What does invested ahead by $1,858.99 mean?

It means the same $10,000, left for the same 5 years, ends $1,858.99 richer invested than saved — $14,025.52 against $12,166.53. The 3-point rate gap is worth $300.00 in the first year and $1,858.99 by year five, because the gap compounds: the invested money earns 7.00% on a balance that is itself growing faster. The savings value, the invested value and the gap are three outputs, never the same number — the savings value is what you can spend tomorrow, the invested value is what the market might give you, and the gap is the price of safety.

Three things to check before you trust the number

The gap compounds, it does not add up. Over 1 year the gap is $300.00, over 5 years it is $1,858.99 and over 10 years it is $4,869.07. A gap that looks small in year one is a different number by year ten — if your gap grows in a straight line, the formula is wrong.

The invested figure is before taxes and before volatility. The market does not return 7.00% every year — some years it is up 20%, some years it is down 20% — and the tax on the gain comes out of the invested figure, not the savings figure. The $1,858.99 is the gap before both.

The emergency fund is not an investment. Its job is to be there when the car breaks or the job goes — the money you need in a bad month is not money you can leave in the market for 5 years. The right question is not which one earns more, but how much cash you need before you can afford to invest the rest.

Worked example

On the defaults: $10,000 lump sum; 5 years; savings rate 4.00% a year; invested rate 7.00% a year; $0 a month.

  1. High-yield savings: $10,000 × 1.045 = $12,166.53.
  2. Invested: $10,000 × 1.075 = $14,025.52.
  3. Invested ahead by: $14,025.52 − $12,166.53 = $1,858.99.
  4. Smallest invested rate for a $1,500 gap: 6.45% — at 6.45% the gap is $1,502.21, and at 6.44% it is $1,495.79.
  5. Smallest lump sum for savings to reach $15,000: $12,328.91 — at $12,328.91 savings is $15,000.00, and at $12,328.90 it is $14,999.99.
  6. Shortest whole years for invested to reach $15,000: 6 years — at 6 years invested is $15,007.30, and at 5 years it is $14,025.52.

Every branch, checked

The reverses, worked backwards

What the defaults assume

The defaults are one $10,000 lump sum, left for 5 years, with nothing added each month — savings at 4.00% a year, invested at 7.00% a year, both with annual compounding. They are a starting point, not a recommendation: savings rates move with the central bank, and the invested rate is an expectation, not a promise — the market has returned 7.00% a year on average over long periods, but no 5-year stretch is guaranteed. Monthly contributions are added at each year end, so a $100 monthly contribution is $1,200 a year, compounded from the year it lands. Change the five numbers to your own and the calculator recomputes instantly.

These notes repeat in every explainer section because this page is built to be read start to finish: the defaults are one lump sum’s numbers, not a standard; the gap compounds, it does not add up; the invested figure is before taxes and before volatility; and the emergency fund is not an investment.

Accuracy & limitations

The calculator does the arithmetic exactly — both balances compound annually at their own rate, monthly contributions are added at each year end, and the gap is the invested value minus the savings value — and every figure on this page is checked against an independent model. What it cannot do is predict the market: the invested rate is an average, and the real return in any 5-year stretch can be far above or below 7.00% — in a bad stretch the invested value can end below the savings value, and the calculator’s edges show exactly that. It also ignores taxes, fees and inflation: the invested figure is before tax, the savings interest is taxed as income, and neither figure is adjusted for what the money buys. And it treats the emergency fund as a lump sum — in real life the fund is built month by month, and the monthly contribution input is how you model that.

High-yield savings value = lump sum × (1 + savings rate)years + monthly contributions at year end; invested value = lump sum × (1 + invested rate)years + the same contributions at the invested rate; invested ahead = invested value − savings value. On the defaults — $10,000 lump sum, 5 years, savings rate 4.00% a year, invested rate 7.00% a year, $0 a month — savings is $12,166.53, invested is $14,025.52 and invested is ahead by $1,858.99. Smallest invested rate for a $1,500 gap: 6.45%. Smallest lump sum for savings to reach $15,000: $12,328.91. Shortest whole years for invested to reach $15,000: 6 years. Largest savings rate for a $1,000 gap: 5.42%. Smallest monthly contribution for savings to reach $15,000: $43.60 a month. Smallest lump sum for invested to reach $20,000: $14,259.73. Frequently asked questions

Should I build an emergency fund or invest first?

Build a small emergency fund first — enough for one or two months of expenses — then start investing, then top the fund up to three to six months. Without cash set aside, every surprise becomes a forced sale of investments, often at the worst time.

How much does keeping money in savings cost me?

On the defaults, $1,858.99 over 5 years on $10,000 — savings reaches $12,166.53 and investing reaches $14,025.52. Over 10 years the gap is $4,869.07. That is the price of instant access and no volatility.

Is a high-yield savings account better than investing?

For money you need soon, yes — it is safe and you can spend it tomorrow. For money you need in ten years, investing usually wins: the same $10,000 is $4,869.07 ahead invested over 10 years. Match the home to the horizon.

What is the invested figure before?

Taxes and volatility. The invested figure is what $10,000 grows to at a steady 7.00% a year before tax — the market does not return 7.00% every year, and the tax on the gain comes out of the invested figure. The return-on-investment-calculator page works out the gain on one investment.

How many months of expenses should my emergency fund cover?

Three to six months of essential expenses is the usual range — three for a stable job with no dependents, six or more for variable income or a family. The emergency-fund-calculator page works out the size of yours from your monthly expenses.

What invested rate should I use?

7.00% a year is the long-run average for a broad stock market index, before inflation and tax — use it as an expectation, not a promise. For a shorter horizon, use a lower rate: the market can be down over any single 5-year stretch.

Does the monthly contribution change the answer?

Yes — contributions compound at the higher rate too. Adding $100 a month widens the gap to $2,260.29, and $500 a month widens it to $3,865.49. The gap is not just about the lump sum.

What invested rate do I need to stay $1,500 ahead?

With $10,000 for 5 years at 4.00% savings, 6.45%: at 6.45% the gap is $1,502.21, and at 6.44% it is $1,495.79 — just below. The calculator’s reverse check works this out for any set of numbers.
