Resistance bands vs weights — total cost & cost per workout

Resistance bands are cheap and wear out; weights are expensive and last forever. Which costs less depends on the set price, how often you replace the bands, and how many years you compare over. This calculator works out the bands total, the weights total, the winner, and the cost per workout — with the prices, replacement interval, workouts a week, and years you choose.

Reverse: the break-even weights cost is $180.00 (exactly $180.00 is a tie); the break-even bands set price is $116.67 — at $116.66 a set the bands cost $349.98 and bands win by $0.02, at $116.67 a set the bands cost $350.01 and weights win by $0.01; and the break-even year is year 11 — at 10 years the bands cost $300.00, at 11 years they cost $360.00. There is no workouts-per-week break-even: the totals do not depend on how often you train.

How the comparison works

Resistance bands wear out, weights do not. The bands total is the set price times the number of sets you buy: the years divided by the replacement interval, rounded up, because you buy a whole set each time. The weights total is the one-time price. The workouts are your workouts a week times 52 times the years, and the cost per workout is each total divided by the workouts. The winner is whichever total is lower.

At the defaults — bands $60 a set, replaced every 2 years, weights $350, 4 workouts a week, 5 years — you buy 3 sets of bands, so the bands cost $180.00 and the weights cost $350.00. Bands win by $170.00. Over 1,040 workouts that is $0.17 a workout for the bands and $0.34 for the weights.

The worked example, line by line

Setup: bands $60 a set, replaced every 2 years, weights $350, 4 workouts a week, 5 years.

Line 1 — the bands sets. ceil(5 ÷ 2) = 3 sets.

Line 2 — the bands total. $60 × 3 = $180.00.

Line 3 — the weights total. $350.00, once.

Line 4 — the winner. $180.00 is less than $350.00, so bands win by $170.00.

Line 5 — the workouts. 4 × 52 × 5 = 1,040 workouts.

Line 6 — the cost per workout. $180.00 ÷ 1,040 = $0.17 for the bands, and $350.00 ÷ 1,040 = $0.34 for the weights. Rounding convention: all figures are computed from unrounded values and rounded only for display — money to cents, so a figure worked out from the rounded numbers can differ by a few cents from the figure shown.

Reverse: the break-even weights cost is $180.00 — exactly $180.00 is a tie, and below it weights win. The break-even bands set price is $116.67: at $116.66 a set the bands cost $349.98 and bands win by $0.02, at $116.67 a set they cost $350.01 and weights win by $0.01. The break-even year is year 11: at 10 years the bands cost $300.00, at 11 years they cost $360.00, and the 6th set is bought just past year 10. There is no workouts-per-week break-even: the totals do not depend on how often you train.

Every branch, checked

2 workouts a week: 520 workouts, and the bands cost $0.35 a workout against $0.67 for the weights — bands still win by $170.00. 6 workouts a week: 1,560 workouts, and the bands cost $0.12 a workout against $0.22 for the weights — bands still win by $170.00. How often you train changes the cost per workout, never the winner.

Bands $40 a set: the bands cost $120.00 and win by $230.00. Bands $100 a set: the bands cost $300.00 and win by $50.00. Bands $150 a set: the bands cost $450.00 and weights win by $100.00 — the flip. The set price is the lever that decides it.

Weights $200: the bands win by $20.00 — $0.17 against $0.19 a workout. Weights $600: the bands win by $420.00 — $0.17 against $0.58 a workout. Weights $150: the bands cost $180.00 and weights win by $30.00 — $0.17 against $0.14 a workout, the other flip.

1 year: the bands cost $60.00 and win by $290.00 — $0.29 against $1.68 a workout. 10 years: the bands cost $300.00 and win by $50.00 — $0.14 against $0.17 a workout. 3 years: the bands cost $120.00 and win by $230.00 — $0.19 against $0.56 a workout. The bands’ advantage shrinks as the years grow, because every replacement buys another set.

Replace every 1 year: the bands cost $300.00 and win by $50.00 — $0.29 against $0.34 a workout. Replace every 3 years: the bands cost $120.00 and win by $230.00 — $0.12 against $0.34 a workout. How long a set lasts is worth $180.00 over 5 years.

Reverse — the other way round: the break-even weights cost is $180.00; the break-even bands set price is $116.67; the break-even year is year 11; and there is no workouts-per-week break-even.

What the defaults assume

The model assumes bands last 2 years and are replaced on schedule, weights last forever with no maintenance, and the prices are the prices you pay once — no sales, no shipping, no accessories. It assumes you train the same number of times every week for the whole comparison. It leaves out the training effect: bands give variable resistance that peaks at the end of the movement, weights give constant resistance, and that difference matters more than $170.00 for heavy squats and deadlifts. It leaves out space and portability: bands fit in a drawer and travel, weights need a rack and a floor. With 0 workouts a week the calculator asks for a real training schedule, because cost per workout needs a workout count. Rounding convention: all figures are computed from unrounded values and rounded only for display — money to cents, so a figure worked out from the rounded numbers can differ by a few cents from the figure shown.

Who uses this

  • The home-gym buyer with $60 bands and $350 weights in mind: they learn bands win by $170.00 over 5 years — so they know the bands cost $0.17 a workout against $0.34, and they check whether the $150 weights, which flip it, are actually available at that price.
  • The traveller who trains on the road: they learn the bands cost $180.00 over 5 years and fit in a bag — so they know the money and the portability point the same way, and they check the 2-workouts-a-week cost, $0.35 a workout, before deciding how much they will really use them.
  • The lifter buying for the long term: they learn the bands pass the weights in year 11 — so they know the bands’ advantage ends when the 6th set is bought just past year 10, and they check the 10-year figures, $300.00 against $350.00, before choosing for a decade.
  • The bargain hunter with $150 weights in the cart: they learn weights win by $30.00 at that price — so they know the flip happens below $180.00, and they check the break-even bands price, $116.67 a set, before paying more for premium bands.

Accuracy & limitations

The math is exact for the numbers you enter: the bands total is the set price times the number of sets, rounded up, the weights total is the one-time price, the workouts are workouts a week times 52 times the years, and the cost per workout is each total divided by the workouts. What the model cannot do is know your real bands: check the replacement interval, because cheap bands can snap in a year and good ones can last three, and check the weights price, because second-hand weights can cost half the new price. It assumes weights last forever; a rusted or cracked plate still needs replacing. It leaves out the training effect, the space, and the portability, which are the real reasons to pick one over the other. Frequently asked questions

Are resistance bands cheaper than weights?

Yes, over 5 years at the defaults. Bands cost $180.00 (3 sets at $60 each) and weights cost $350.00 once, so bands win by $170.00. But the answer flips with the prices: at $150 a set the bands cost $450.00 and weights win by $100.00, and at $150 for the weights, weights win by $30.00.

How long do resistance bands last?

About 2 years of regular use. That is the default replacement interval here: over 5 years you buy 3 sets. Replace them every year instead and the bands cost $300.00 over 5 years, still $50.00 cheaper than the $350.00 weights. Replace them every 3 years and they cost only $120.00.

What is the cost per workout of resistance bands vs weights?

$0.17 vs $0.34 at the defaults. Over 1,040 workouts in 5 years, the bands cost 17 cents a workout and the weights cost 34 cents. Train twice a week instead and the bands cost $0.35 a workout against $0.67 for the weights; train six times a week and it is $0.12 against $0.22.

When do weights become cheaper than resistance bands?

When the bands are expensive, the weights are cheap, or the horizon is long. The break-even bands price is $116.67 a set: at $116.66 the bands cost $349.98 and win by $0.02, at $116.67 they cost $350.01 and weights win by $0.01. The break-even weights price is $180.00. And past 10 years the bands pass the weights: at 11 years the bands cost $360.00.

Do resistance bands replace weights for strength training?

For most home training, yes — with a caveat. Bands give variable resistance that peaks at the end of the movement, while weights give constant resistance. Bands travel, store in a drawer, and cost less; weights last forever and load heavy squats and deadlifts better. This calculator compares the money, not the training effect.

How many workouts a week change the winner?

None. The totals do not depend on how often you train — only the cost per workout changes. At 2 workouts a week the bands cost $0.35 a workout and the weights $0.67; at 6 a week it is $0.12 against $0.22. The winner is decided by the prices and the years, not the schedule.
