How dumbbells and barbells compare
Dumbbells load each hand separately, so two 40 lb dumbbells total 80 lb; a barbell load is the bar plus the plates, all in one load. The total load is what each side lifts per rep. The volume is sets times reps times load: the per-set volume is all the sets in one workout, and the weekly volume is the per-set volume times the sessions a week. The cost per pound uses the set’s maximum capacity, not the weight you lift today: the set cost divided by the capacity. The space is the floor footprint, including room to load plates and set the weights down.
At the defaults — 40 lb dumbbells, a 135 lb barbell, 3 sets of 10 reps, 3 sessions a week, a $300 dumbbell set with 200 lb of capacity, a $350 barbell set with 300 lb of capacity, 6 sq ft for the dumbbells and 20 sq ft for the barbell — the dumbbell load is 80 lb and the barbell load is 135 lb, so the barbell wins by 55 lb. The per-set volume is 2,400 lb vs 4,050 lb, and the weekly volume is 7,200 lb vs 12,150 lb, so the barbell moves 4,950 lb more a week. The cost per pound is $1.50 vs $1.17, so the barbell wins by $0.33 a pound. The space is 6 vs 20 sq ft, so the dumbbell wins by 14 sq ft.

The worked example, line by line
Setup: dumbbells 40 lb a hand, barbell 135 lb, 3 sets, 10 reps, 3 sessions a week, dumbbell set $300 / 200 lb, barbell set $350 / 300 lb, space 6 / 20 sq ft.
Line 1 — the total load. Two 40 lb dumbbells total 2 × 40 = 80 lb; the barbell is 135 lb. The barbell wins by 135 − 80 = 55 lb.
Line 2 — the volume. Per set the dumbbells move 3 × 10 × 80 = 2,400 lb and the barbell moves 3 × 10 × 135 = 4,050 lb. Over the week that is 2,400 × 3 = 7,200 lb vs 4,050 × 3 = 12,150 lb, so the barbell moves 4,950 lb more a week.
Line 3 — the cost per pound. $300 ÷ 200 lb = $1.50 a pound for the dumbbells, and $350 ÷ 300 lb = $1.17 a pound for the barbell, so the barbell wins by $0.33 a pound.
Line 4 — the space. 6 sq ft vs 20 sq ft: the dumbbells win by 14 sq ft.
Reverse: dumbbells of 67.50 lb a hand equal a 135 lb barbell; a 80.00 lb barbell equals 40 lb dumbbells; 5.06 dumbbell sets a workout (exact 5.0625, 15.19 sets across the week) match the barbell’s weekly volume of 12,150 lb; 16.88 dumbbell reps a set (exact 16.875) match the barbell’s per-set volume of 4,050 lb; a dumbbell set of $233.33 (exact 233.3333) matches the barbell’s $1.17 a pound; a barbell set of $450.00 matches the dumbbells’ $1.50 a pound; and 5.06 dumbbell sessions a week (exact 5.0625) match the barbell’s weekly volume.
Every branch, checked
Dumbbells 50 lb a hand: the dumbbell load is 100 lb, so the barbell still wins by 35 lb. The per-set volume is 3,000 vs 4,050 lb and the weekly volume is 9,000 vs 12,150 lb. Heavier dumbbells close the gap, but 50 lb a hand is not enough.
Dumbbells 60 lb a hand: the dumbbell load is 120 lb, so the barbell wins by only 15 lb. The per-set volume is 3,600 vs 4,050 lb and the weekly volume is 10,800 vs 12,150 lb. At 60 lb a hand the two sides are nearly even.
Dumbbells 70 lb a hand: the dumbbell load is 140 lb, so the dumbbell wins by 5 lb — the flip. The per-set volume is 4,200 vs 4,050 lb and the weekly volume is 12,600 vs 12,150 lb, so the dumbbells move 450 lb more a week. Two heavy dumbbells out-lift a moderate barbell.
Barbell 185 lb: the barbell load is 185 lb, so the barbell wins by 105 lb. The per-set volume is 5,550 lb and the weekly volume is 16,650 lb. A heavy barbell is out of the dumbbells’ reach at these weights.
Barbell 95 lb: the barbell load is 95 lb, so the barbell wins by only 15 lb. The per-set volume is 2,850 lb and the weekly volume is 8,550 lb. A light barbell is barely ahead of two 40s.
4 sets: the per-set volume is 3,200 vs 5,400 lb and the weekly volume is 9,600 vs 16,200 lb. More sets lift the volume on both sides, and the gap grows with it.
5 sets: the per-set volume is 4,000 vs 6,750 lb and the weekly volume is 12,000 vs 20,250 lb. Five sets of dumbbells still move less than five sets with the barbell.
12 reps: the per-set volume is 2,880 vs 4,860 lb and the weekly volume is 8,640 vs 14,580 lb. More reps lift the volume on both sides, and the barbell’s lead grows in pounds.
4 sessions a week: the weekly volume is 9,600 vs 16,200 lb. 2 sessions a week: the weekly volume is 4,800 vs 8,100 lb. Sessions scale the week, not the set, so the load winner never changes.
Dumbbell set $200: the dumbbell cost per pound is $1.00, so the dumbbell wins by $0.17 a pound — the flip. A cheap dumbbell set beats the barbell on price per pound, even though the barbell still wins on load.
Barbell set $500: the barbell cost per pound is $1.67, so the dumbbell wins by $0.17 a pound. A pricey barbell set loses the value contest to the $300 dumbbells.
Dumbbell set $600: the dumbbell cost per pound is $3.00, so the barbell wins by $1.83 a pound. An expensive dumbbell set is the worst value of the three prices shown.
Reverse — the other way round: dumbbells of 67.50 lb a hand equal a 135 lb barbell; a 80.00 lb barbell equals 40 lb dumbbells; 5.06 dumbbell sets a workout match the barbell’s weekly volume; 16.88 dumbbell reps a set match the barbell’s per-set volume; a dumbbell set of $233.33 matches the barbell’s cost per pound; a barbell set of $450.00 matches the dumbbells’ cost per pound; and 5.06 dumbbell sessions a week match the barbell’s weekly volume.
What the defaults assume
The model assumes the dumbbell weight is per hand and the barbell weight is the bar plus all the plates, the same sets and reps on both sides, and the same sessions a week. It assumes the cost per pound uses the set’s maximum capacity, not the weight you lift today, and the space is the floor footprint including room to load plates and set the weights down. It does not score balance, stabiliser work, safety, or how the lift feels: dumbbells train each side on its own, and a barbell lets you load the most weight in one bar. With a dumbbell weight of 0 the dumbbell load and volume are 0 and the barbell wins; with a barbell weight of 0 the barbell load and volume are 0 and the dumbbell wins; with 0 sets or 0 reps the volumes are 0; and with 67.5 lb dumbbells against a 135 lb barbell the load is a tie. Rounding convention: all figures are computed from unrounded values and rounded only for display — money to cents, weights to two decimals, so a figure worked out from the rounded numbers can differ by a few cents from the figure shown.

Who uses this
- The home lifter with 40 lb dumbbells and a 135 lb barbell: they learn the barbell wins on load by 55 lb — so they know the barbell moves 4,950 lb more a week, and they check the 5.06 dumbbell sets a workout it would take to catch up before buying more plates.
- The lifter who just bought 70 lb dumbbells: they learn the dumbbells win on load by 5 lb — so they know two 70s out-lift the 135 lb barbell, and they check the 12,600 lb weekly volume before retiring the bar.
- The buyer comparing a $200 dumbbell set with a $350 barbell set: they learn the dumbbells win on cost per pound by $0.17 — so they know the cheap set is the better value per pound of capacity, and they check the $233.33 break-even price before paying more.
- The lifter with a spare corner, not a spare room: they learn the dumbbells win on space by 14 sq ft — so they know the barbell needs 20 sq ft of floor and the dumbbells need 6, and they check the footprint before the barbell arrives.
Accuracy & limitations
The math is exact for the numbers you enter: each load is the dumbbell weight doubled or the barbell weight as entered, the volume is sets times reps times load, the weekly volume is the per-set volume times the sessions a week, and the cost per pound is the set cost divided by the set’s maximum capacity. What the model cannot do is know your real lifts: check the dumbbell weight per hand, because a pair marked 40 lb may be 40 lb each or 40 lb the pair, and check the barbell weight, because the bar itself is usually 45 lb before any plates. It assumes the same sets, reps, and sessions on both sides; if you do more dumbbell sets than barbell sets, the volume winner can flip. It leaves out balance, stabiliser work, safety, and how the lift feels.
