PST, PDT, and when Los Angeles changes
Pacific Time is two offsets, not one. PST, Pacific Standard Time, is UTC−8 and runs from the first Sunday in November to the second Sunday in March. PDT, Pacific Daylight Time, is UTC−7 and runs the rest of the year. In 2027 that means Los Angeles is on PST until March 14, on PDT from March 14 to November 7, and back on PST from November 7. The converter reads the date you enter and applies the right offset and the right label automatically, so a January noon and a July noon never get the same answer even though the clock shows 12:00 in both.
The business-hours shortcut
The Pacific-to-Eastern gap never changes: it is 3 hours in winter and 3 hours in summer, because both zones spring forward and fall back on the same dates. So 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Pacific is always 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM Eastern, and a 2:00 PM Pacific call is always a 5:00 PM Eastern call. That is the one conversion worth memorizing, and it is the reason West Coast teams schedule stand-ups at 9:00 AM Pacific — it is the earliest hour that is still morning in New York. The gap to Hawaii does change, though: Honolulu is 2 hours behind Los Angeles in winter (10:00 AM when it is noon in Los Angeles) and 3 hours behind in summer (9:00 AM), because Hawaii never observes daylight saving.
Worked example: January vs July
Noon on January 15, 2027 in Los Angeles is PST, so add 8 hours for UTC: 20:00 UTC, then 3:00 PM EST, 2:00 PM CST, 1:00 PM MST, 11:00 AM AKST, and 10:00 AM HST. Noon on July 15, 2027 in Los Angeles is PDT, so add 7 hours for UTC: 19:00 UTC, then 3:00 PM EDT, 2:00 PM CDT, 1:00 PM MDT, 11:00 AM AKDT, and 9:00 AM HST. Notice that the Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Alaska labels shift too — EST becomes EDT, CST becomes CDT — while Hawaii never shifts: HST is UTC−10 all year, so the same Los Angeles noon is 10:00 AM in Honolulu in January and 9:00 AM in July.
Rounding convention, stated plainly: time conversions are exact to the minute — there is no rounding, only offsets. The only judgement call is the label: PST from November to March, PDT from March to November, applied by the date you enter.
Output · formula · meaning
| Output | Formula | What it means |
| UTC | Los Angeles time + 8 hours (PST) or + 7 hours (PDT) | Noon Jan 15, 2027 PST = 20:00 UTC. |
| Eastern | UTC − 5 (EST) or − 4 (EDT) | 3:00 PM EST on Jan 15, 2027. |
| Central | UTC − 6 (CST) or − 5 (CDT) | 2:00 PM CST on Jan 15, 2027. |
| Mountain | UTC − 7 (MST) or − 6 (MDT) | 1:00 PM MST on Jan 15, 2027. |
| Alaska | UTC − 9 (AKST) or − 8 (AKDT) | 11:00 AM AKST on Jan 15, 2027; 11:00 AM AKDT on Jul 15, 2027. |
| Hawaii | UTC − 10 all year (HST) | 10:00 AM HST on Jan 15, 2027; 9:00 AM HST on Jul 15, 2027. |
Who uses this
- The Los Angeles meeting scheduler: books a noon call in Los Angeles and learns it is 3:00 PM in New York and 10:00 AM in Honolulu on January 15, 2027.
- The remote worker: starts at 9:00 AM Pacific and checks that it is already noon for the New York team — the 3-hour gap never changes.
- The traveler: lands in Los Angeles in July and checks that noon PDT is 7:00 PM UTC, so the flight board's UTC times finally make sense.
- The student: cites a time-zone conversion and copies the labelled result — 12:00 PM PST is 8:00 PM UTC on January 15, 2027 — with the date attached.
Accuracy & limitations
Conversions use the browser's built-in time-zone data for America/Los_Angeles, so they follow the current US daylight-saving rules: spring forward on the second Sunday in March, fall back on the first Sunday in November. The two transition hours are the edge cases: 2:00 to 2:59 AM does not exist on March 14, 2027, and 1:00 to 1:59 AM happens twice on November 7, 2027, so times inside those hours are ambiguous and the converter resolves them to the nearest valid time. Most of Arizona is the standing exception — Phoenix stays on MST all year, and this converter's Mountain result is not a Phoenix result in summer. Dates before 2007 follow older daylight-saving rules and may differ from modern tables. This page converts the Pacific zone abbreviation; for California cities with the same result plus city context, see the California Time Converter.
