MST, MDT, and when Denver changes
Mountain Time is two offsets, not one. MST, Mountain Standard Time, is UTC−7 and runs from the first Sunday in November to the second Sunday in March. MDT, Mountain Daylight Time, is UTC−6 and runs the rest of the year. In 2027 that means Denver is on MST until March 14, on MDT from March 14 to November 7, and back on MST from November 7. The converter reads the date you enter and applies the right offset and the right label automatically, so a January noon and a July noon never get the same answer even though the clock shows 12:00 in both.
The Phoenix trap
Most of Arizona does not observe daylight saving, and that is the mistake this converter exists to prevent. Phoenix stays on MST, UTC−7, all year. In January that changes nothing: noon in Denver is noon in Phoenix, because both cities are on MST. In July it changes everything: noon in Denver is MDT, UTC−6, while Phoenix is still MST, UTC−7, so noon in Denver is 11:00 AM in Phoenix. Anyone who copies Denver's daylight-saving label onto Phoenix will be an hour early to every summer meeting. The converter's Denver result is not a Phoenix result in summer — subtract one hour from the Denver time between March and November.
Worked example: January vs July
Noon on January 15, 2027 in Denver is MST, so add 7 hours for UTC: 19:00 UTC, then 2:00 PM EST, 1:00 PM CST, 11:00 AM PST, 10:00 AM AKST, and 9:00 AM HST. Noon on July 15, 2027 in Denver is MDT, so add 6 hours for UTC: 18:00 UTC, then 2:00 PM EDT, 1:00 PM CDT, 11:00 AM PDT, 10:00 AM AKDT, and 8:00 AM HST. Notice that the Eastern, Central, Pacific, and Alaska labels shift too — EST becomes EDT, CST becomes CDT — while Hawaii never shifts: HST is UTC−10 all year, so the same Denver noon is 9:00 AM in Honolulu in January and 8:00 AM in July.
Rounding convention, stated plainly: time conversions are exact to the minute — there is no rounding, only offsets. The only judgement call is the label: MST from November to March, MDT from March to November, applied by the date you enter.
Output · formula · meaning
| Output | Formula | What it means |
| UTC | Denver time + 7 hours (MST) or + 6 hours (MDT) | Noon Jan 15, 2027 MST = 19:00 UTC. |
| Eastern | UTC − 5 (EST) or − 4 (EDT) | 2:00 PM EST on Jan 15, 2027. |
| Central | UTC − 6 (CST) or − 5 (CDT) | 1:00 PM CST on Jan 15, 2027. |
| Pacific | UTC − 8 (PST) or − 7 (PDT) | 11:00 AM PST on Jan 15, 2027. |
| Alaska | UTC − 9 (AKST) or − 8 (AKDT) | 10:00 AM AKST on Jan 15, 2027. |
| Hawaii | UTC − 10 all year (HST) | 9:00 AM HST on Jan 15, 2027; 8:00 AM HST on Jul 15, 2027. |
Who uses this
- The Denver meeting scheduler: books a noon call in Denver and learns it is 2:00 PM in New York and 11:00 AM in Los Angeles on January 15, 2027.
- The Phoenix caller: checks a July meeting and learns that noon in Denver is 11:00 AM in Phoenix, because Phoenix never springs forward.
- The traveler: lands in Denver in July and checks that noon MDT is 6:00 PM UTC, so the flight board's UTC times finally make sense.
- The student: cites a time-zone conversion and copies the labelled result — 12:00 PM MST is 7:00 PM UTC on January 15, 2027 — with the date attached.
Accuracy & limitations
Conversions use the browser's built-in time-zone data for America/Denver, so they follow the current US daylight-saving rules: spring forward on the second Sunday in March, fall back on the first Sunday in November. The two transition hours are the edge cases: 2:00 to 2:59 AM does not exist on March 14, 2027, and 1:00 to 1:59 AM happens twice on November 7, 2027, so times inside those hours are ambiguous and the converter resolves them to the nearest valid time. Most of Arizona is the standing exception — Phoenix stays on MST all year, and this converter's Denver result is not a Phoenix result in summer. Dates before 2007 follow older daylight-saving rules and may differ from modern tables.
