Why the UTC figure moves but the US figure does not
Noon London time is 12:00 UTC in January and 11:00 UTC in July: that is the whole effect of British Summer Time, which runs from March 28 to October 31 in 2027. But the US figure barely notices, because the United States moves its clocks too: New York goes from EST (UTC−5) to EDT (UTC−4) at almost the same time of year, so the London-to-New York gap stays 5 hours in both seasons and noon London is 7:00 AM Eastern in January and in July alike. Chicago, Denver, and Los Angeles behave the same way, each one hour further back, and Honolulu, which never observes daylight saving, moves from 2:00 AM in January to 1:00 AM in July — the one US zone where the summer figure genuinely shifts against London. The practical rule is therefore the reverse of the usual warning: for the US East Coast, do not adjust for the season at all; for UTC and Hawaii, adjust by one hour.
The gap weeks, and the business-hours trap
The one time the 5-hour rule breaks is the gap weeks, when one side has changed its clocks and the other has not. The United States springs forward about two weeks before the UK — in 2027, US daylight saving starts March 14 while BST starts March 28 — so from March 14 to March 28 London is only 4 hours ahead of New York, and 9:00 AM London is 5:00 AM Eastern, as on March 20, 2027. The autumn gap runs the other way: the UK falls back on October 31 while the US stays on daylight saving until November 7, so from October 31 to November 7 London is again only 4 hours ahead, and 9:00 AM London is 5:00 AM Eastern, as on November 3, 2027. That is the real business-hours trap: a 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM London working day is 4:00 AM to 12:00 PM Eastern in both main seasons, which already means there is no comfortable overlap with a US 9-to-5 — the realistic slots are a late US morning catching the end of the London day, or a London late afternoon catching the start of the US day — and in the gap weeks the window slides an hour earlier still. If a meeting must fall inside both working days, book it for late morning Eastern, which is late afternoon London, and put both times in the invitation.
Output · formula · meaning
| Output | Formula | What it means |
| UTC instant | London wall time rendered through Intl Europe/London | Noon London is 12:00 UTC in January, 11:00 UTC in July — BST shifts the UTC figure, never a hand-kept offset. |
| US Eastern | UTC instant rendered by Intl per zone | Noon London is 7:00 AM Eastern in both seasons, because both cities move their clocks. |
| Gap weeks | US DST on, UK DST off (or vice versa) | 9:00 AM London is 5:00 AM Eastern in the March and November gap weeks, e.g. March 20 and November 3, 2027. |
| UK DST 2027 | BST March 28 – October 31 | GMT in winter, BST (UTC+1) in summer, for the whole UK. |
Who uses this
- The London business caller: books a 9:00 AM London start as 4:00 AM Eastern and moves it to late morning Eastern instead, catching the London afternoon.
- The transatlantic team lead: compares January and July conversions and discovers the Eastern figure does not move with the seasons — only UTC and Hawaii shift.
- The gap-week scheduler: checks a March 20 meeting and catches that 9:00 AM London is 5:00 AM Eastern that week, not 4:00 AM.
- The Hawaii-based relative: sees noon London as 2:00 AM Hawaii time in January and 1:00 AM in July, and plans calls for the London evening instead.
Accuracy & limitations
Conversions are computed by recovering the UTC instant from the London wall time through the browser's Europe/London time-zone data, so they follow the UK and US daylight-saving rules in force on the chosen date rather than a fixed offset table. That also means results depend on the visitor's browser being up to date: if a government changes its rules after the browser's data was published, the conversion could be off until the browser updates. The whole UK shares one time zone, so London, Edinburgh, Cardiff, and Belfast all show the same time. This tool converts clock times only; it does not account for flight durations, layovers, or the date line beyond the local-date rendering shown. Note the 1:00 AM hour on March 28, 2027 does not exist in London (clocks jump 1:00 to 2:00 AM), and the 1:00 AM hour on October 31, 2027 happens twice.
