Pizza servings calculator
Put your guests, slices each and slices per pizza in: 12 guests at 3 slices each need 36 slices — 4.5 pizzas exact at 8 slices a pizza, 5 pizzas in all, with 4 slices left over.

On the defaults — 12 guests, 3 slices each, 8 slices a pizza — you need 5 pizzas, with 4 slices left over. This is the pizza servings tool: count the guests once, judge the appetite honestly, and order the pizzas once — a short pizza order waits for no second delivery.
Put your guests, slices each and slices per pizza in: 12 guests at 3 slices each need 36 slices — 4.5 pizzas exact at 8 slices a pizza, 5 pizzas in all, with 4 slices left over.
It means five pizzas feed 12 guests at 3 slices each, with slices to spare. The party needs 36 slices, since 12 times 3 is 36; one pizza is cut into 8 slices, so the exact need is 36 divided by 8, or 4.5 pizzas, and pizzas are sold whole, so the order rounds up to 5 pizzas. Five pizzas give 40 slices, which is 4 slices more than the party needs, and those 4 spare slices are not waste exactly — they are the slices the late guest, the second helping and the guest who takes the last slice all draw on, so a party ordered to the exact pizza runs short before the last guest.
| Output | Formula | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Slices needed | guests × slices each | 36 slices — 12 × 3. |
| Pizzas exact | slices ÷ slices per pizza | 4.5 pizzas — 36 ÷ 8. |
| Pizzas | exact, rounded up | 5 pizzas — with 4 slices left over. |
First, check the slices per pizza on the menu you are actually ordering from: 8 is the standard large pizza, but a small pizza cut into 6 feeds fewer people per pizza, and the same party needs 6 pizzas instead of 5. Second, remember the order follows the slices, not the guests alone: 12 guests at 2 slices each need only 3 pizzas, while 12 guests at 4 slices each need 6, and a guest count without an appetite figure orders blind. Third, judge the slices each honestly: a party of teenagers wants 4 slices each, a lunch meeting wants 2, and the 3-slice default sits between the two. Drinks, salad and dessert are planned separately — see the Thanksgiving servings calculator for the same servings maths on a holiday table.
12 guests, 3 slices each, 8 slices a pizza. Slices: 12 × 3 = 36. Pizzas exact: 36 ÷ 8 = 4.5. Pizzas to buy: 5, rounded up, since pizzas are sold whole. Slices left over: 5 × 8 − 36 = 4. In practice that means ordering 5 pizzas, and expecting 4 slices left for seconds and latecomers. If the same party ate 4 slices each instead, the need would rise to 6 pizzas, but the party fed would be identical in size.
With 16 guests instead of 12, the slices rise to 48 and the need to 6 pizzas. With 2 slices each, the slices fall to 24 and the need to 3 pizzas. With 6 slices a pizza, the exact need rises to 6 pizzas, since each pizza feeds fewer people. With 10 guests, the slices fall to 30 and the need to 4 pizzas, since 30 divided by 8 is 3.75 and still rounds up to 4. Guests, appetite and slice size each move the order on their own, so a wrong appetite figure is as costly as a wrong guest count.
The guests behind 5 pizzas are 12: at 10 the need is 4 pizzas (10 guests, 3 slices each, 30 slices, 3.75 pizzas exact, 8 slices a pizza); at 16 it is 6 pizzas (16 guests, 3 slices each, 48 slices, 6 pizzas exact, 8 slices a pizza). The slices each behind 5 pizzas are 3: at 2 the need is 3 pizzas (12 guests, 2 slices each, 24 slices, 3 pizzas exact, 8 slices a pizza); at 4 it is 6 pizzas (12 guests, 4 slices each, 48 slices, 6 pizzas exact, 8 slices a pizza). The slices per pizza behind 5 pizzas are 8: at 6 the need is 6 pizzas (12 guests, 3 slices each, 36 slices, 6 pizzas exact, 6 slices a pizza); at 10 it is 4 pizzas (12 guests, 3 slices each, 36 slices, 3.6 pizzas exact, 10 slices a pizza). Each reverse moves one input and holds the rest, so the step is exactly one guest, appetite or slice-size change.
The defaults assume 12 guests, 3 slices each, and pizzas cut into 8 slices. They do not assume drinks, salad, dessert or dietary splits — a party with half the guests vegetarian counts its vegetarian pizzas separately, and the total still follows the slices.
The arithmetic is exact for the inputs entered; the judgement is the appetite. Real parties have late guests, second helpings and one guest who eats only the toppings, and the menu on the night overrides any planning figure; a party planned at 2 slices each under-orders a hungry crowd, and a party planned at 4 slices each over-orders a light one. Treat 5 pizzas as the planning order for 12 guests at 3 slices each and 8 slices a pizza, and allow 4 slices each for a teenage crowd.

5 pizzas at 3 slices each and 8 slices a pizza. The party needs 36 slices; at 8 slices a pizza that is 4.5 pizzas exact, rounded up to 5.
Multiply guests by slices each for the slices, divide by slices per pizza, and round up. 12 guests at 3 slices each is 36 slices, or 5 pizzas at 8 slices a pizza.
3 on average for a mixed party, 2 for a light lunch crowd, 4 for teenagers or a hungry team. Judge the crowd, not the rule: appetite moves the order as much as the guest count does.
No — this calculator counts pizzas only. Drinks, salad and dessert are counted separately, by the party.
Round up: pizzas are sold whole, and the spare slices are the slices seconds and latecomers draw on. A party ordered to the exact pizza runs short before the last guest.
Work out the vegetarian pizzas and the rest separately, then add them: the total still follows the slices. The Thanksgiving servings calculator shows the same split-count thinking on a holiday table.
