On the defaults — 12 guests at $32.50 each — your holiday meal total is $390.00. This is the meal-cost tool: turn a guest list into a food budget before the shopping starts, so the menu and the money agree.
Put your guests and cost per guest in: 12 guests at $32.50 each comes to $390.00 for the holiday table.
It means feeding twelve people costs $390.00 when each seat is priced at $32.50: the turkey, the sides, dessert and drinks, all divided by the guest count. The per-guest figure is the lever — every added guest adds exactly $32.50, and every dollar added to the per-guest figure adds $12.00 across the table. A menu that drifts from $32.50 to $38.00 per guest does not cost $5.50 more; it costs $66.00 more, because the table has twelve seats.
| Output | Formula | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Meal total | guests × cost per guest | $390.00 — 12 × $32.50. |
| Cost per guest | meal total ÷ guests | $32.50 — $390.00 ÷ 12. |
| One more guest | cost per guest | $32.50 — each added seat adds one share. |
| One fewer guest | cost per guest | $32.50 — each empty seat saves one share. |
First, check the per-guest figure is built from the menu, not guessed: price the turkey, the sides, dessert and drinks, add them up, and divide by the guests. Second, count the maybe-guest: a seat that stays empty saves $32.50, but a guest who arrives uncounted costs it, so plan for the larger list. Third, remember drinks and extras sit inside the per-guest figure or outside it, never both: decide once, and keep the figure consistent when the menu changes.
12 guests, $32.50 each. Meal total: 12 × $32.50 = $390.00. In practice that might be a $140.00 turkey and trimmings core, $130.00 of sides, $60.00 of dessert and $60.00 of drinks — $390.00 in all, or $32.50 a seat. If two more guests confirm, the table becomes 14 seats: 14 × $32.50 = $455.00, a rise of $65.00, which is two shares, not a whole new menu.
With 10 guests instead of 12, the total falls to $325.00: two fewer shares at $32.50 each. With 14 guests, the total rises to $455.00: two more shares. At $28.00 per guest, the total falls to $336.00: twelve shares at the lower figure. At $38.00 per guest, the total rises to $456.00: twelve shares at the higher figure. The guest count and the per-guest figure move the total independently, and both deserve a real number.
The guests behind $390.00 are 12: at 10 guests the total is $325.00; at 14 guests it is $455.00. The cost per guest behind $390.00 is $32.50: at $28.00 the total is $336.00; at $38.00 it is $456.00. Each reverse moves one input and holds the other, so the step from neighbour to neighbour is exactly two seats or one per-guest step.
The defaults assume 12 guests and $32.50 per guest for food and drink. They do not assume a catered meal, a potluck where guests bring dishes, or alcohol beyond what the per-guest figure already includes; for a potluck, subtract the dishes guests bring before dividing, and for catering, use the caterer per-head quote as the per-guest figure.
The arithmetic is exact for the inputs entered; the judgement is the per-guest figure and the guest count. Real menus are lumpy: the turkey is one big cost, not twelve equal shares, and a guest who eats little still counts as a seat at the table. Prices also move between the plan and the shop, so treat $390.00 as the budget to shop against, and re-run it with the till total when the shopping is done.

At $32.50 per guest, $390.00: 12 × $32.50. Build the per-guest figure from the menu — turkey, sides, dessert and drinks — and the total follows.
Everything eaten and drunk at the table: the main, the sides, dessert and drinks. Decide once whether extras like tableware or decorations belong in it, and keep that decision when the menu changes.
Subtract the dishes guests bring before dividing: price only what the host buys, then divide by the guests. A potluck table can halve the host per-guest figure without changing the meal.
Add one share each: two guests at $32.50 add $65.00, taking the total from $390.00 to $455.00. The menu does not need to change — it needs two more portions of the same dishes.
This calculator prices the table; the Thanksgiving servings calculator sizes it — 12 guests at 5 sides need 60 side servings. Use servings to plan quantities, this tool to plan money.
Count any child who eats a full plate as a full share. A toddler who eats little can be counted as half a share: 11 full shares plus one half share is 11.5 × $32.50 = $373.75, not $390.00.
