Thanksgiving servings calculator
Put your guests, side dishes and servings per recipe in: 12 guests and 5 sides need 60 side servings — 2 batches of each side, 10 batches in all.

On the defaults — 12 guests and 5 sides at 8 servings per recipe — your Thanksgiving table needs 60 side servings, or 2 batches of each side. This is the Thanksgiving servings tool: turn a guest list and a menu into a batch count, so no side runs out at guest nine.
Put your guests, side dishes and servings per recipe in: 12 guests and 5 sides need 60 side servings — 2 batches of each side, 10 batches in all.
It means your 12 guests will eat 60 side servings in total, because each guest takes one serving of each of your 5 sides, and each side must be cooked twice, because one recipe serves 8 and you are feeding 12. The batch count is the practical answer: one batch of mashed potatoes feeds 8, so a second batch covers guests 9 to 12. Ten batches in all sounds like a lot of cooking, but it is five dishes cooked twice, not ten different dishes.
| Output | Formula | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Side servings needed | guests × side dishes | 60 — 12 × 5. |
| Batches per side | round guests ÷ servings per recipe up | 2 — 12 ÷ 8, rounded up. |
| Batches in all | batches per side × side dishes | 10 — 2 × 5. |
| Turkey servings | one serving per guest | 12 — one per guest. |
First, check your recipe yields: a “serves 8” casserole that really serves 6 changes every batch count, so enter the honest yield, not the optimistic one. Second, remember the model assumes one serving of each side per guest: if your family skips some sides and doubles up on others, the totals still hold in aggregate, but individual dishes will run out unevenly. Third, count children who eat sides: a child who takes a spoon of each side counts as a guest here, even if their turkey portion is small.
12 guests, 5 sides, 8 servings per recipe. Side servings: 12 × 5 = 60. Batches per side: 12 ÷ 8 = 1.5, rounded up to 2. Batches in all: 2 × 5 = 10. Turkey servings: 12, one per guest. So cook each side twice, and put 12 turkey portions on the plan — the shopping list follows from the batches, not from the guest count alone.
With 16 guests instead of 12, the side servings rise to 80, while the batches per side stay at 2, because 16 ÷ 8 is exactly 2. With 6 sides instead of 5, the servings rise to 72 and the batches in all to 12. With only 4 servings per recipe, the servings stay at 60 but the batches per side rise to 3, or 15 batches in all. With 8 guests, the servings fall to 40 and each side needs just 1 batch.
The guests behind 60 side servings are 12: at 8 guests the figures are 40 side servings, 1 batch of each of 5 sides; at 16 guests they are 80 side servings, 2 batches of each of 5 sides. The sides behind 60 side servings are 5: at 4 sides the figures are 48 side servings, 2 batches of each of 4 sides; at 6 sides they are 72 side servings, 2 batches of each of 6 sides. The servings per recipe behind 60 side servings are 8: at 4 the figures are 60 side servings, 3 batches of each of 5 sides; at 12 they are 60 side servings, 1 batch of each of 5 sides.
The defaults assume 12 guests, 5 different sides, and recipes that serve 8. They do not assume dessert, drinks, or appetizers, which are planned separately, and they do not assume guests skip sides. For a smaller table, drop the guest count first; for a bigger menu, raise the sides count and watch the batch total, which is where the cooking effort really lives.
The arithmetic is exact for the inputs entered; the judgement is the recipe yield and the one-serving-per-side assumption. Real tables are uneven: the mashed potatoes may go twice as fast as the Brussels sprouts, and a guest may take two servings of one side and none of another. Treat the batch count as the minimum that covers everyone once, and add a batch of the favourite side if your family has one.

Students and researchers: cite the calculator name, the page URL and the date you used it, and quote the defaults (12 guests, 5 sides, 8 servings per recipe) so the 60-serving result can be checked.
One serving of each side per guest, so the total is guests times sides: 12 guests and 5 sides need 60 side servings. If your guests typically take two helpings of a favourite side, plan an extra batch of that one.
Divide guests by servings per recipe and round up: 12 guests ÷ 8 servings is 1.5, so 2 batches. Rounding up matters — 1 batch would feed only 8 of your 12 guests.
Yes, for sides: a child who takes a spoon of each side counts as a guest in this maths, even though their turkey portion is smaller. Use the turkey size calculator for the bird itself, where children count as half.
Enter that number in servings per recipe. A recipe that serves 6 for 12 guests needs 2 batches, while one that serves 12 needs just 1 — the batch count follows the yield, not the dish.
No. This calculator covers side servings and turkey servings only. Plan dessert as one slice per guest and drinks separately, since both follow different serving rules.
The totals still hold: a buffet needs the same 60 servings for 12 guests and 5 sides. Buffets just hide shortages longer, so the batch count is, if anything, more important.
