Mean, Median & Mode Calculator: Find the Average Fast

On the defaults — 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9 — the mean is 5.00, the median is 4.50, the mode is 4, the count is 8, the sum is 40.00 and the range is 7.00. Put in any list of numbers and the calculator works out the mean, the median and the mode, plus the count, the sum, the range and the list in order. This one works out the mean, the median and the mode in one place: the standard-deviation-calculator page is the SPREAD — how far the numbers sit from the mean — not the average itself; the fractions-average page is the FRACTION — the average of fractions — not a list of whole numbers; the average-time-calculator page is the TIME — an average of minutes and seconds — not a list of numbers; and the gpa-calculator page is the GRADE — a weighted average of grades — not the mean, median and mode of a dataset. No mean-median-mode calculator exists on this site — this one is the first.

Mean, median & mode calculator

The mean is the sum divided by the count; the median is the middle number when the list is in order; the mode is the number that appears most. On the defaults — 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9; the mean is 5.00; the median is 4.50; the mode is 4; the count is 8; the sum is 40.00; the range is 7.00. The mean, the median and the mode are three averages, never the same number — the mean is the average, the median is the middle, and the mode is the most common. A dataset where every number appears once has no mode, so the calculator says so plainly, and a single number is its own mean, median and mode. The calculator shows all of it with notes, never hides it.

Mean 5.00; median 4.50; mode 4; count 8; sum 40.00; range 7.00; sorted 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9Mean 5.00; median 4.50; mode 4; count 8; sum 40.00; range 7.00; sorted 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9Mean 5.00; median 4.50; mode 4; count 8; sum 40.00; range 7.00; sorted 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9. The sum is 40.00 over 8 numbers, so the mean is 40.00 divided by 8, which is 5.00 (unrounded 5.000000); the middle two are 4 and 5, so the median is 4.50 (unrounded 4.500000); 4 appears three times, more than any other number, so the mode is 4.

What do mean 5.00, median 4.50 and mode 4 mean?

They are three ways of saying what is typical about the list 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9. The mean is the average — the sum, 40.00, divided by the count, 8, which is 5.00. The median is the middle — the list has eight numbers, so the middle two are 4 and 5, and their average is 4.50. The mode is the most common — 4 appears three times, more than any other number, so the mode is 4. The mean, the median and the mode are three averages, never the same number: the mean is the average, the median is the middle, and the mode is the most common.

Sort the list first. The median is the middle of the sorted list, not the middle of the list as you typed it. 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9 is already in order; 9, 2, 4, 5, 4, 7, 5, 4 is the same list, but its middle is not the same number until you sort it.

The mean listens to outliers. Add a 100 to the defaults and the mean jumps from 5.00 to 15.56, while the median moves only to 5.00 and the mode stays 4. When one number is far from the rest, the median tells you more about what is typical.

No mode is a real answer. A dataset where every number appears once has no mode, so the calculator says so plainly instead of inventing one. A single number is its own mean, median and mode.

Worked example

On the defaults: 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9.

  1. Sort: 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9 — already in order.
  2. Count: 8 numbers.
  3. Sum: 2 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 5 + 5 + 7 + 9 = 40.00.
  4. Mean: 40.00 ÷ 8 = 5.00 (unrounded 5.000000).
  5. Median: the middle two are 4 and 5, so (4 + 5) ÷ 2 = 4.50 (unrounded 4.500000).
  6. Mode: 4 appears three times, more than any other number, so the mode is 4.
  7. Range: 9 − 2 = 7.00.
  8. Smallest number to add for the mean to reach at least 6: 14 — adding 14 gives a mean of 6.00, and adding 13 gives 5.89 (unrounded 5.888889).
  9. Smallest number to add for the median to reach at least 5: 5 — adding 5 gives a median of 5.00 and the modes 4 and 5, and adding 4 gives a median of 4.00.

What the defaults assume

The defaults are 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9 — a small list with a clear mode, a mean of 5.00 and a median of 4.50 — and they are a starting point, not a benchmark: your dataset may be test scores, measurements or prices, and the right average for you is the one your numbers describe. Paste your own list, separated by commas, and the calculator recomputes instantly. Sort the list, count it, add it up — and remember that no mode is a real answer.

These notes repeat in every explainer section because this page is built to be read start to finish: the defaults are one dataset, not a standard; sort the list first; the mean listens to outliers; and no mode is a real answer.

Who uses this

Accuracy & limitations

The calculator does the arithmetic exactly — the mean is the sum over the count, the median is the middle of the sorted list, the mode is the most frequent value, and the range is the largest minus the smallest — and every figure on this page is checked against an independent model. What it cannot do is decide which average matters: the mean listens to outliers, so when one number is far from the rest the median tells you more about what is typical. It also takes one list at a time — a weighted average needs the gpa-calculator page, and the spread needs the standard-deviation-calculator page. And the mean of the defaults plus 13 is 5.89, unrounded 5.888889 — the page prints the unrounded figure so the rounding does not mislead you.

The mean is the sum divided by the count; the median is the middle number when the list is in order; the mode is the number that appears most. On the defaults — 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9 — the mean is 5.00, the median is 4.50 and the mode is 4. Smallest number to add for the mean to reach at least 6: 14. Smallest number to add for the median to reach at least 5: 5. Smallest number to add for the range to reach at least 10: 12. Largest number to add for the mean to stay at or below 5.50: 9. Smallest number to add for the sum to reach at least 50: 10. Smallest number to add for the mode to become 4 and 5: 5. Source: Bright Side Kit, brightoolbox.com.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mean?

The mean is the average: add all the numbers and divide by how many there are. For 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9 the sum is 40.00 and the count is 8, so the mean is 5.00.

What is the median?

The median is the middle number when the list is in order. For 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9 the middle two are 4 and 5, so the median is 4.50. With an odd count the median is the single middle number.

What is the mode?

The mode is the number that appears most often. For 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9 the mode is 4, because 4 appears three times. A list where every number appears once has no mode.

When should I use the median instead of the mean?

When one number is far from the rest: add 100 to the defaults and the mean jumps to 15.56 while the median moves only to 5.00. The median is the typical value when outliers pull the mean around.

Can there be two modes?

Yes: 4, 4, 5, 5 has two modes, 4 and 5, because both appear twice. The calculator lists them both, joined with 'and'.

How do I find the mean of fractions?

Add the fractions and divide by how many there are — the fractions-average page works it out with the fractions shown.

What is the range?

The range is the largest number minus the smallest: for the defaults 9 minus 2 is 7.00. It is a quick measure of how spread out the numbers are; the standard-deviation-calculator page measures the spread more precisely.

How do I work out a GPA?

A GPA is a weighted average of grade points, not a plain mean — the gpa-calculator page works it out with the weights shown.
