Average a list of times

On the default — four mile splits (8:32.4, 8:15.1, 8:41.9, 8:27.6) — the total is 33:57.0 and the average is 8:29.3 per mile. Paste your own times below.

One time per line. Accepts h:mm:ss, m:ss, or plain seconds — decimals are fine (8:32.4).

The average-time formula, worked

Average = (sum of all times) ÷ (number of times). The only trick is doing the arithmetic in seconds, not in minutes and seconds separately. On the default: 8:32.4 = 512.4 s, 8:15.1 = 495.1 s, 8:41.9 = 521.9 s, 8:27.6 = 507.6 s. Sum = 2,037.0 s; ÷ 4 = 509.25 s = 8:29.3. Averaging the minutes column and the seconds column separately breaks the moment the seconds carry past 60 — convert to seconds first, always.

Who uses this

  • Run coaches: averaging squad splits after a workout to set the next session’s target.
  • Time-study analysts: timing a repeated task ten times to get an honest per-unit number.
  • Cyclists & swimmers: checking interval consistency — the range tells the real story.
  • Students: timing practice-exam sections to see if the pace fits the real test.

Accuracy & limitations

Times parse to 0.1-second precision and the mean is exact arithmetic. It is the arithmetic mean — the right average for equal intervals like laps, shifts, or repeated trials. For average speed across unequal distances it misleads; use total distance ÷ total time instead. Blank lines are skipped, and anything that is not a recognizable time stops the calculation with the offending line number.

Logging these by hand? The decimal time converter turns 8:29.3 into 8.49 minutes for the spreadsheet, and the military time converter reads 24-hour timestamps.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate the average of times?

Convert every time to seconds, add them up, divide by how many there are, then convert back to minutes and seconds. On four mile splits totaling 33:57.0, that is 2,037.0 ÷ 4 = 509.25 s = 8:29.3.

How do I average times in Excel or Google Sheets?

=AVERAGE(range) with the cells formatted as time. For totals past 24 hours use the [h]:mm:ss format so Excel does not wrap the hours. Paste the same list here to double-check the sheet.

Why can’t I average the minutes and seconds separately?

Because of the carry: averaging 0:50 and 1:20 by columns gives “0.5 minutes, 35 seconds” — nonsense. The correct answer is 1:05. Always convert to a single unit (seconds) before averaging.

Should I use the mean or the median for times?

The mean when every attempt counts equally — it is the true center of the work. The median when one blowup (a dropped baton, a red light) would drag the mean somewhere meaningless.

How do I average paces per mile?

If every split covers the same distance, just average the times — that average is your average pace. For different distances, divide total distance by total time instead of averaging the per-mile figures.

Can I mix hours, minutes, and plain seconds?

Yes — 1:02:30, 45:10, and 90 all parse in the same list. Hours are optional on every line.
