Meal Prep Time Calculator: Minutes and Hours Total

On the defaults — 5 meals, 20 minutes prep and 30 minutes cook each — the session takes 250 minutes, 50 minutes a meal, 4.17 hours. This is the meal prep time tool: add prep and cook for the time per meal, multiply by the meals for the session, and divide by 60 for the hours — a time guess from the meal count alone tells you nothing until the work inside each meal is known.

Meal prep time calculator

Put your meals, prep time and cook time in: 5 meals at 20 minutes prep and 30 minutes cook each take 250 minutes — 4.17 hours.

How many meals the session prepares — 5 on the defaults. Meals move the total directly: one more meal adds a full per-meal time.

How many minutes of prep each meal needs — 20 on the defaults. Prep moves every meal together: slower prep lengthens the whole session.

How many minutes of cooking each meal needs — 30 on the defaults. Cook time moves the total the same way prep does, minute for minute.

Meal prep time (5 meals, 20 minutes prep, 30 minutes cook)Meal prep time 250 minutes (5 meals, 20 minutes prep each, 30 minutes cook each, 50 minutes a meal, 4.17 hours).Per meal 20 + 30 = 50 minutes; total 50 × 5 = 250 minutes; hours 250 ÷ 60 = 4.17. Count the meals you actually cook, since the kitchen on the day settles the time, not the plan.

What does 250 minutes, 4.17 hours mean?

It means a session of 5 meals, each needing 20 minutes of prep and 30 minutes of cooking, takes 50 minutes a meal and 250 minutes in all — a little over four hours of kitchen work. The prep and the cook set the per-meal time, the meals set the session, and the hours are just the session restated: 250 minutes is 4.17 hours, not a second session on top. The only judgement is whether the per-meal times are honest, because a session planned on quick meals that are really slow ones is a session that runs past dinner.

Time per mealprep + cook50 minutes — 20 + 30.
Session totalper meal × meals250 minutes — 50 × 5.
Session hourstotal ÷ 604.17 hours — 250 ÷ 60.
Cook totalcook × meals150 minutes — 30 × 5.

Three things to check before you trust the number

First, check the meal count honestly: 5 meals must be the meals actually prepared in the session, not the meals hoped for, because a sixth meal adds a full 50 minutes and a session planned short is a session that overruns. Second, check the prep against the chopping board, not the recipe card: 20 minutes must cover washing, peeling, and chopping for one meal, because a recipe that says 20 minutes and takes 35 on a slow board understates every meal in the session. Third, check whether the cooking overlaps: 30 minutes of cook time per meal assumes the stove work runs one meal at a time, while a cook who preps the next meal while the first simmers finishes sooner on the clock, even though the work minutes are the same.

Worked example

5 meals, 20 minutes prep, 30 minutes cook. Per meal: 20 + 30 = 50 minutes. Session: 50 × 5 = 250 minutes. Hours: 250 ÷ 60 = 4.17 hours. Cook total: 30 × 5 = 150 minutes. In practice that means a five-meal prep session is an afternoon of kitchen work — the number to set against the evening, since 250 minutes planned on a busy Sunday is a session that needs starting early.

Every branch, checked

With 7 meals instead of 5, the session rises to 350 minutes and 5.83 hours. With 30 minutes prep instead of 20, the per-meal time rises to 60 minutes and the session to 300 minutes, 5 hours. With 45 minutes cook instead of 30, the per-meal time rises to 65 minutes and the session to 325 minutes, 5.42 hours. With 3 meals instead of 5, the session falls to 150 minutes, 2.5 hours.

The reverses, worked backwards

The meals behind 250 minutes are 5: at 3 meals the session is 150 minutes (2.5 hours); at 7 meals it is 350 minutes (5.83 hours). The prep behind 250 minutes is 20 minutes: at 10 minutes the per-meal time is 40 minutes and the session 200 minutes (3.33 hours); at 30 minutes the per-meal time is 60 minutes and the session 300 minutes (5 hours). The cook behind 250 minutes is 30 minutes: at 15 minutes the per-meal time is 35 minutes and the session 175 minutes (2.92 hours); at 45 minutes the per-meal time is 65 minutes and the session 325 minutes (5.42 hours).

What the defaults assume

The defaults assume prep and cook run one after the other for each meal, the same prep and cook time for every meal, and no cleanup counted. They do not assume parallel cooking, meals of very different sizes, or time spent shopping and washing up — all of which move the real session — so treat 250 minutes as the planning work for five equal meals, not the clock time of a cook who overlaps jobs.

Who uses this

Accuracy & limitations

The arithmetic is exact for the inputs entered; the judgement is the per-meal times and whether jobs overlap. Real sessions vary with knife speed, stove space, and recipe difficulty — so treat 250 minutes as the planning work for 5 meals at 20 minutes prep and 30 minutes cook, and check it against one timed session before trusting the whole week.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to prep 5 meals?

250 minutes on the defaults: 20 minutes prep plus 30 minutes cook is 50 minutes a meal, and 50 × 5 = 250 minutes, or 4.17 hours.

Does prep or cook time matter more?

Neither: a minute is a minute on either side. Cutting prep from 20 to 10 saves the same 50 minutes over 5 meals as cutting cook from 30 to 20.

Can I cook one meal while prepping the next?

Yes, and the clock time then falls below 250 minutes, though the work minutes stay the same. This calculator counts work minutes, so treat 4.17 hours as the work, not the wall clock, when jobs overlap.

What if my meals take very different times?

Then use the average prep and cook times across the session, or run the calculator once per meal type and add the sessions. A single average hides a slow meal, so split the session when one meal dominates.

Does this include cleanup and shopping?

No: 250 minutes covers prep and cook only. Add shopping and washing-up time separately if the session must fit inside an evening.

How is this different from the servings calculators?

Those pages count portions — how many servings a group needs. This page counts time — how long the cooking takes. Use those pages for quantities, this page for the clock.
