Standard US mattress dimensions. Manufacturers vary by about ±1 inch, so measure your frame and bedding before ordering:
| Size | Inches (W × L) | cm | Floor space | Min. room | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crib / Toddler | 28×52 in | 71×132 cm | 10.1 sq ft | — | Infants & toddlers |
| Twin / Single | 38×75 in | 97×190 cm | 19.8 sq ft | 8×10 ft | Kids, bunk beds & daybeds |
| Twin XL | 38×80 in | 97×203 cm | 21.1 sq ft | 8×10 ft | College dorms & taller single sleepers |
| Full / Double | 54×75 in | 137×190 cm | 28.1 sq ft | 10×10 ft | Single adults & guest rooms |
| Queen | 60×80 in | 152×203 cm | 33.3 sq ft | 10×12 ft | Couples — the most popular US size |
| King / Eastern King | 76×80 in | 193×203 cm | 42.2 sq ft | 12×12 ft | Couples who want maximum space |
| California King | 72×84 in | 183×213 cm | 42.0 sq ft | 12×12 ft | Taller couples (extra legroom, narrower) |
The two kings trip people up: the standard king (76×80) is wider, the California king (72×84) is longer and narrower — pick the Cal king if anyone sleeping on it is over 6 feet tall.
| Output | Formula | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Mattress dimensions | standard nominal size | The footprint your bed, frame, and sheets must fit — e.g. queen 60×80″. |
| Room-fit list | bed width + 48″ ≤ room width | Every size that fits with ~24″ of walking space on each side of the bed. |
| Minimum room | bed + walking space | The smallest room that keeps the bed usable — e.g. 10×12 ft for a queen. |
These are the industry-standard nominal sizes; actual mattresses vary ±1 inch by brand, and pillow-top or Euro-top models add height, not footprint. Room recommendations assume about 24 inches of walking space on each side of the bed — tight for dressers and doors, so measure twice. RV, Olympic queen (66×80), and Alaskan king sizes are specialty sizes and intentionally left off this standard chart.
Bright Side Kit. "Mattress Sizes Chart." https://brightoolbox.com/mattress-sizes-chart/ Accessed October 22, 2026.A standard (Eastern) king is 76″ wide × 80″ long; a California king is 72″ wide × 84″ long — 4 inches narrower, 4 inches longer. The Cal king suits taller sleepers; the standard king suits couples who want maximum width. Sheets are not interchangeable.
38″ × 80″ — the width of a twin with the length of a queen. It’s the standard college dorm size, which is why Twin XL sheets exist as their own product. Regular twin sheets (38×75) come up about 5 inches short.
It’s tight: a full is 54 inches wide, giving each sleeper 27 inches — narrower than a twin. Fine for smaller couples and great for guest rooms, but most couples who try a full nightly upgrade to a queen (60″) within a year or two.
A queen is 60×80 inches; plan on a 10×12-foot room minimum to keep ~24 inches of walking space on three sides. For a king, step up to 12×12 feet. Enter your room width in the lookup above for the exact fit list.
Slightly — about ±1 inch on width and length between manufacturers. Fitted sheets have enough stretch to absorb it, but rigid frames and platform beds don’t: measure the actual mattress (or the frame’s interior) before buying the other.
The US standard crib mattress is 28″ × 52″ (about 71 × 132 cm). Federal rules require it to fit snugly — no more than two fingers of gap between mattress and crib side — so stick to the standard size.
