How high is a standard kitchen counter?
The standard kitchen counter is 36 inches high, with a 24-inch stool — the figure the National Kitchen & Bath Association uses, and the height almost every base cabinet is built to. A bar or pub-height counter is 42 inches, with a 30-inch stool. A table-height island or dining table is 30 inches, with an 18-inch stool. A traditional bathroom vanity is 32 inches; the comfort-height vanity, now the common choice, is 36 inches. An accessible counter tops out at 34 inches under ADA guidance. A tall-cook kitchen counter is 38 inches, for cooks around 6 feet 2 inches and taller. The standard counter depth is 25 inches. A stool should sit 10–12 inches below the counter — this chart uses 12 inches, so a 36-inch counter takes a 24-inch stool and a 42-inch bar takes a 30-inch stool.
Two things about the model are worth stating plainly. First, the stool height is the counter height minus 12 inches — 36 − 12 = 24 inches. Second, the matching types are every table row with exactly your counter height — at 36 inches that is four types: standard kitchen counter, comfort-height bathroom vanity, laundry folding counter and outdoor kitchen counter; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.
The kitchen counter height chart
| Counter type | Counter height | Counter depth | Stool height |
| Dining table height | 30 in | 30–36 in | 18 in |
| Desk height | 30 in | 24–30 in | 18 in |
| Traditional bathroom vanity | 32 in | 21 in | 20 in |
| Accessible counter | 34 in | 25 in | 22 in |
| Standard kitchen counter | 36 in | 25 in | 24 in |
| Comfort-height bathroom vanity | 36 in | 21 in | 24 in |
| Laundry folding counter | 36 in | 28 in | 24 in |
| Outdoor kitchen counter | 36 in | 25 in | 24 in |
| Tall-cook kitchen counter | 38 in | 25 in | 26 in |
| Bar / pub height | 42 in | 24 in | 30 in |
Four counter types share the 36-inch standard — the kitchen counter, the comfort-height vanity, the laundry folding counter and the outdoor kitchen counter — and two share the 30-inch table height: the dining table and the desk. The bar is the tallest standard counter at 42 inches, with the tallest stool at 30 inches.
The worked example, line by line
Setup: 36-inch counter.
Line 1 — the stool height. The stool height is 36 − 12 = 24 inches.
Line 2 — the matching types. The table rows at exactly 36 inches are standard kitchen counter, comfort-height bathroom vanity, laundry folding counter and outdoor kitchen counter — four types.
Line 3 — the switch to a bar. Switching from a 36-inch counter to a 42-inch bar raises the stool from 24 inches to 30 inches — 6 inches higher.
Line 4 — the check. 36 − 12 = 24 inches, the stool; and 42 − 12 = 30 inches, the bar stool.

A 48-inch counter takes a 36-inch stool and matches nothing — taller than any standard counter. A 36.5-inch counter takes a 24.5-inch stool and matches nothing; the nearest standard is 36 inches.

Who uses this
- The homeowner planning a kitchen remodel: they learn a 36-inch counter takes a 24-inch stool — and they check the 42 in reverse to see what a bar-height counter needs.
- The homeowner buying stools: they learn the stool should sit 12 inches below the counter — and they check the 30 in reverse to see the tallest counter that still takes an 18-inch stool.
- The tall cook planning a kitchen: they learn a 38-inch tall-cook counter takes a 26-inch stool — and they check the 38 in reverse to see the smallest counter height for a 26-inch stool.
- The homeowner with a 40-inch counter: they learn it takes a 28-inch stool and matches no standard type — and they check the 36 in reverse to see the smallest counter height for a 24-inch stool.
Accuracy & limitations
The math is first-principles: the stool height is the counter height minus 12 inches, floored at 0 — a counter shorter than 12 inches takes no stool; the matching types are the table rows with exactly your counter height. The stool rule is the 10–12 inch gap a stool should sit below the counter, with 12 inches used here; a stool 10 inches below would sit 2 inches higher. What the model cannot do is size your kitchen: the 36-inch standard and the 42-inch bar are the common figures, not a rule for every body — a cook around 6 feet 2 inches and taller may want the 38-inch tall-cook counter, and an accessible counter tops out at 34 inches under ADA guidance; the depths in the table are the usual depths, and your cabinets may differ. Use it to find the stool height and the matching types for your counter — then measure twice before you order.
