Dining table size chart — seats, sizes & room guide

A dining table is sized by the people sitting at it: 24 in of table length per person along each long side, and 36 in of clearance behind the chairs so they can pull out. This chart lists the six standard sizes, from 2 to 12 seats, with the table size and the minimum room for each.

How many people the table should seat. The chart runs from 2 to 12 seats. The default is 6 seats.

Rectangular or round: a rectangular table seats people along the sides, a round table seats them around the edge. The default is rectangular.

The space behind the chairs so they can pull out, in inches. Use 36 in normally, 42 in for a walkway. The default is 36 in.

The standard dining table sizes

A dining table is sized by the people sitting at it, and the rule is 24 in of table length per person along each long side: a 72 in table seats 3 per side, so 6 people, and a 48 in table seats 2 per side, so 4 people. The width is narrower than the length: 36 in is the standard width up to 6 seats, 42 in from 8 seats, and 48 in at 12 seats. Round tables work differently: the seats follow the circumference, π × diameter / 24, so a 60 in round table has 188.50 in of edge and 7.85 seats by the 24-in rule — but the chart lists 6 as the comfortable count, because 7 or 8 people around a 60 in table are squeezed. The chart below lists the six standard sizes, from 2 to 12 seats, with the rectangular size, the round size where one exists, and the minimum room each one needs.

At the default — 6 seats, rectangular, 36 in of clearance — the table is 36 × 72 in and the minimum room is 12.00 × 9.00 ft (144 × 108 in), which is 108.00 sq ft. The round alternative is 60 in across, needing a room 132 in across (11.00 ft).

How the room size works

The room is the table plus the clearance on every side: room length = table length + 2 × clearance, and room width = table width + 2 × clearance. At 36 in of clearance, a 72 in table needs 72 + 72 = 144 in of room length, and a 36 in table needs 36 + 72 = 108 in of room width. That is 12.00 × 9.00 ft, and the area is 144 × 108 / 144 = 108.00 sq ft. The 36 in is the space behind the chairs so they can pull out: with less, nobody can sit down. Use 42 in (3.5 ft) when the space behind the chairs is also a walkway. Clearance 36 in is 3 ft; walkway 42 in is 3.5 ft.

The worked example, line by line

Setup: 6 seats, rectangular, clearance 36 in.

Line 1 — the table. 6 seats at 24 in per person is 3 per side, so the table is 3 × 24 = 72 in long and 36 in wide: 36 × 72 in.

Line 2 — the room length. 72 + 2 × 36 = 144 in, which is 12.00 ft.

Line 3 — the room width. 36 + 2 × 36 = 108 in, which is 9.00 ft.

Line 4 — the room area. 144 × 108 / 144 = 108.00 sq ft.

Line 5 — the round alternative. A 60 in round table needs 60 + 2 × 36 = 132 in across, which is 11.00 ft.

Reverse: a room of 12 × 10 ft (144 × 120 in) fits a table up to 72 × 48 in, so the largest chart table is the 6-seat 36 × 72 in — the 8-seat 42 × 96 in needs 168 in of length and does not fit. A room of 14 × 12 ft (168 × 144 in) fits a table up to 96 × 72 in, so the 8-seat 42 × 96 in fits. A room of 10 × 9 ft (120 × 108 in) fits a table up to 48 × 36 in, so the 4-seat 36 × 48 in fits exactly. A room of 16 × 12 ft (192 × 144 in) fits a table up to 120 × 72 in, so the 10-seat 42 × 120 in fits. A room of 9 × 8 ft (108 × 96 in) fits a table up to 36 × 24 in, so the 2-seat 24 × 36 in fits exactly.

Every branch, checked

4 seats: the table is 36 × 48 in and the room is 10.00 × 9.00 ft, which is 90.00 sq ft. Two seats per side, at 24 in each.

8 seats: the table is 42 × 96 in and the room is 14.00 × 9.50 ft, which is 133.00 sq ft. Four seats per side, and the width grows to 42 in.

2 seats: the table is 24 × 36 in and the room is 9.00 × 8.00 ft, which is 72.00 sq ft. One seat per side, the smallest table in the chart.

10 seats: the table is 42 × 120 in and the room is 16.00 × 9.50 ft, which is 152.00 sq ft. Five seats per side; there is no round table at this size.

12 seats: the table is 48 × 144 in and the room is 18.00 × 10.00 ft, which is 180.00 sq ft. Six seats per side, and the width grows to 48 in.

42 in clearance: the 6-seat room is 13.00 × 10.00 ft (156 × 120 in), which is 130.00 sq ft. Six more inches of clearance on each side add 22.00 sq ft of room.

30 in clearance: the 6-seat room is 11.00 × 8.00 ft (132 × 96 in), which is 88.00 sq ft. Six inches less on each side save 20.00 sq ft — but 30 in is tight for pulling a chair out.

6 seats, round: the table is 60 in across and the room is 132 in across (11.00 ft), which is 121.00 sq ft of square room. The round table needs a square room 11.00 ft on each side, while the rectangular table needs 12.00 × 9.00 ft.

Reverse — the other way round: a room 12 × 10 ft fits the 6-seat table; a room 14 × 12 ft fits the 8-seat table; a room 10 × 9 ft fits the 4-seat table exactly; a room 16 × 12 ft fits the 10-seat table; a room 9 × 8 ft fits the 2-seat table exactly.

What the chart assumes

The chart assumes 24 in of table length per person along each long side, 36 in of clearance behind the chairs (42 in for a walkway), and a rectangular room that fits the table plus the clearance on every side. It assumes the chairs are standard dining chairs: chair widths vary, and 20 in per person is tight. Round tables use the comfortable standard counts, not the 24-in rule on the circumference: a 60 in round table has 188.50 in of edge, which is 7.85 seats at 24 in per person, but the chart lists 6, because 7 or 8 people around it are squeezed. A 48 in round table has 150.80 in of edge, which is 6.28 seats, but the chart lists 4. A 72 in table is 1.50× the length of a 48 in table, and a 144 in table is 2.00× a 72 in table. With fewer than 2 seats, the smallest (2-seat) row is shown. With more than 12 seats, the chart ends: above the chart means banquet tables or a custom size. With clearance 0, the room is the table size: the 6-seat room is 6.00 × 3.00 ft (72 × 36 in), 18.00 sq ft. This is a size and room reference, NOT a furniture-buying or structural chart: it does not say which table to buy, whether your floor can carry it, or how the chairs will fit. Rounding convention: totals are computed from unrounded values, so rounded parts may differ by a cent from their rounded sum.

Who uses this

  • The homeowner seating 6 people: they learn the table is 36 × 72 in and the room needs to be 12.00 × 9.00 ft — so they know the room is 108.00 sq ft, and they check the round alternative (60 in dia, 132 in of room) before choosing a shape.
  • The homeowner with a 12 × 10 ft dining room: they learn the largest table that fits is the 6-seat 36 × 72 in — so they know the 8-seat table does not fit, and they check the 14 × 12 ft reverse (8 seats, 42 × 96 in) before assuming a bigger room is only a little bigger.
  • The renter with a 9 × 8 ft dining nook: they learn the largest table that fits is the 2-seat 24 × 36 in, exactly — so they know a 4-seat table does not fit, and they check the 10 × 9 ft reverse (4 seats, 36 × 48 in) before buying a table that will not fit through the door.
  • The host planning for 12: they learn the table is 48 × 144 in and the room needs to be 18.00 × 10.00 ft — so they know the room is 180.00 sq ft, and they check the 42 in clearance branch (130.00 sq ft for 6 seats) before putting a walkway behind every chair.

Accuracy & limitations

The math is exact for the numbers you enter: the room is the table plus twice the clearance on each side, the area is the room length times the room width divided by 144, and the round-table seats follow π × diameter / 24. What the chart cannot do is measure your real room: check the room, because a radiator, a sideboard, or a door swing eats the clearance, and check the chairs, because chair widths vary and 20 in per person is tight. It assumes a rectangular room that fits the table plus the clearance on every side, standard dining chairs, and the comfortable standard counts for round tables. It leaves out the space a sideboard or a serving table needs, and it does not allow for a leaf or an extension. It is a size and room reference, not a furniture-buying or structural chart. For the desk in the same room, see desk size chart; for the countertop in the kitchen next door, see countertop size chart.

Frequently asked questions

What size dining table do I need for 6 people?

36 by 72 inches — and the room needs to be 12 by 9 feet. At 24 in per person, 6 seats need 3 per side, so the table is 72 in long and 36 in wide. With 36 in of clearance behind the chairs, the room is 144 × 108 in, which is 108.00 sq ft.

How much room do I need behind a dining table?

36 inches of clearance behind the chairs, so they can pull out. That is 3 ft. Use 42 in (3.5 ft) when the space behind the chairs is also a walkway. With 42 in of clearance, the 6-seat room grows to 13.00 × 10.00 ft, or 130.00 sq ft.

What size round table seats 6 people?

60 inches across. The round alternative to the 36 × 72 in rectangular table is 60 in in diameter, and it needs a room 132 in across (11.00 ft). The 24-in rule gives 7.85 seats around a 60 in table, but 6 is the comfortable count.

What size dining table seats 8 people?

42 by 96 inches — and the room needs to be 14 by 9.5 feet. Four seats per side at 24 in each, and the width grows to 42 in. The round alternative is 72 in across, needing a room 144 in across (12.00 ft).

What size room do I need for a 10-seat dining table?

16 by 9.5 feet. A 10-seat table is 42 × 120 in, and with 36 in of clearance the room is 192 × 114 in, which is 152.00 sq ft. There is no round table at this size.

How many people fit around a 60-inch round table?

6 comfortably, 7 or 8 squeezed. The circumference is 188.50 in, which is 7.85 seats at 24 in per person, but the chart lists 6 as the comfortable count. A 48 in round table has 150.80 in of edge, which is 6.28 seats, but the chart lists 4.
