★ EVERYDAY · CHRISTMAS · GIFTS
On the defaults — 12 gifts at 4 sq ft a gift and $0.40 a sq ft — gift wrap costs $19.20 in all, 48 sq ft of paper, $1.60 a gift. This is the gift wrap cost tool: gifts times the paper a gift is the total paper, and the total paper times the price a sq ft is the cost — a gift count tells you nothing until the paper a gift and the roll price are counted.
Put your gifts, paper a gift and price a sq ft in: 12 gifts at 4 sq ft a gift and $0.40 a sq ft cost $19.20 in all — 48 sq ft of paper.
It means 12 gifts wrapped at 4 sq ft of paper a gift and $0.40 a sq ft cost nineteen dollars and twenty cents in all, which is 48 sq ft of paper and $1.60 a gift. The gift count sets how many gifts are wrapped, the paper a gift sets how much paper each gift takes, and the price a sq ft sets how dear the roll is: four more gifts add $6.40 at the default paper and price, and a dearer roll lifts the total without touching the gift count at all. The only judgement is the paper a gift itself — a small jewellery box and a large board game are not the same wrap, and the gift actually wrapped is the only honest source for it.
| Output | Formula | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Total paper | gifts × paper a gift | 48 sq ft — 12 × 4. |
| Cost | total paper × price a sq ft | $19.20 — 48 × $0.40. |
| Per gift | cost ÷ gifts | $1.60 — $19.20 ÷ 12. |
| Paper a dollar | total paper ÷ cost | 2.50 sq ft — 48 ÷ $19.20. |
First, check the gift count honestly: 12 gifts must be gifts actually wrapped, not gifts planned that never got paper — a gift counted that was never wrapped adds $1.60 that was never spent. Second, check the paper a gift against the largest gift: 4 sq ft must cover the biggest box in the pile, not the average one — a big box measured at the average runs short mid-wrap, and short paper means a second sheet and a seam nobody planned. Third, check the price a sq ft against the roll actually bought: $0.40 must be that roll’s price per sq ft, not the cheapest roll on the shelf — a thick festive roll runs dearer per sq ft, and the wrong roll breaks the total.
12 gifts, 4 sq ft a gift, $0.40 a sq ft. Total paper: 12 × 4 = 48 sq ft. Cost: 48 × $0.40 = $19.20. Per gift: $19.20 ÷ 12 = $1.60. Paper a dollar: 48 ÷ $19.20 = 2.50 sq ft. In practice that means a dozen Christmas gifts cost under two dollars a gift in paper, and the 48 sq ft figure is the one to set against the roll actually bought, since rolls are sold by length and width while this calculator thinks in square feet.
At 8 gifts instead of 12, the total falls to $12.80 — 32 sq ft, $1.60 a gift. At 20 gifts instead of 12, the total rises to $32.00 — 80 sq ft, $1.60 a gift. At 5 sq ft a gift instead of 4, the total rises to $24.00 — 60 sq ft, $2.00 a gift. At $0.25 a sq ft instead of $0.40, the total falls to $12.00 — 48 sq ft, $1.00 a gift.
The gifts behind $19.20 are 12: at 8 gifts the total is $12.80; at 20 gifts it is $32.00. The price behind $19.20 is $0.40 a sq ft: at $0.25 a sq ft the total is $12.00; at $0.55 a sq ft it is $26.40, $2.20 a gift — the price a sq ft never touches the gift count, only how dear each square foot is.
The defaults assume 12 gifts, 4 sq ft a gift, and $0.40 a sq ft, for one Christmas wrapping session at home. They do not assume tape, ribbon, gift tags, bows, or wasted offcuts — so treat $19.20 as the planning cost for the paper alone at 12 gifts and 4 sq ft a gift, and buy a little extra paper, because real wrapping always wastes a strip or two on awkward shapes.
The arithmetic is exact for the inputs entered; the judgement is the gifts actually wrapped, the true paper a gift for the largest gift in the pile, and whether the price a sq ft is for the roll actually bought. Real wrapping varies with overlap, mistakes and odd shapes — so treat $19.20 as the planning cost for 12 gifts at 4 sq ft a gift and $0.40 a sq ft, and check it against the roll before budgeting it as exact.

48 sq ft on the defaults: 12 gifts at 4 sq ft a gift.
$19.20 in all on the defaults: 48 sq ft at $0.40 a sq ft.
$1.60 a gift on the defaults: $19.20 ÷ 12 gifts, at 4 sq ft a gift.
Because paper and cost both scale with gifts: 20 gifts cost $32.00, still $1.60 a gift, while 8 gifts cost $12.80.
Fewer gifts, less paper a gift, or a cheaper roll: 8 gifts cost $12.80, and $0.25 a sq ft brings 12 gifts to $12.00.
No: this calculator prices paper only — tape, ribbon and tags are separate costs, not paper.
