Christmas gift budget calculator
Put your total budget, people and wrapping reserve in: a $500.00 budget for 10 people with a $50.00 wrapping reserve leaves a $450.00 gift fund, or $45.00 per person.

On the defaults — a $500.00 budget for 10 people with a $50.00 wrapping reserve — your gift fund is $450.00, or $45.00 per person. This is the Christmas gift budget tool: set the total, protect the wrapping money first, and let the per-person figure follow, instead of discovering the overspend in January.
Put your total budget, people and wrapping reserve in: a $500.00 budget for 10 people with a $50.00 wrapping reserve leaves a $450.00 gift fund, or $45.00 per person.
It means $450.00 of your $500.00 is available for the gifts themselves, and the other $50.00 is already set aside for wrapping paper, cards and postage, so the per-person figure is $45.00, not $50.00. Skipping the reserve is the classic Christmas overspend: the gifts fit the budget and the wrapping does not, so the season ends $50.00 over. The per-person figure is a planning average, not a rule that every gift must cost $45.00 — a $60.00 gift for one person means a $30.00 gift for another, and the fund still lands.
| Output | Formula | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Gift fund | budget − wrapping reserve | $450.00 — $500.00 − $50.00. |
| Per person | gift fund ÷ people | $45.00 — $450.00 ÷ 10. |
| Wrapping share | wrapping reserve ÷ budget | 10% — $50.00 ÷ $500.00. |
| Budget check | gift fund + wrapping reserve | $500.00 — $450.00 + $50.00. |
First, count the people honestly: the colleague, the teacher and the neighbour who always gets a card with a gift card inside all belong on the list, or the per-person figure is flattered. Second, size the reserve for your real wrapping habits: $50.00 covers paper, tape, cards and a few postage stamps for 10 people, but a list that ships gifts needs more. Third, remember the per-person figure is an average: tiering the list — more for close family, less for acquaintances — still lands on the same fund, as long as the tiers add up.
$500.00, 10 people, $50.00 reserve. Gift fund: $500.00 − $50.00 = $450.00. Per person: $450.00 ÷ 10 = $45.00. In practice that might be $60.00 for each parent, $45.00 for each sibling and $30.00 for each friend — the tiers differ, the fund does not. If one gift runs to $70.00, another must fall to $20.00, or the fund breaks by $25.00.
With a $650.00 budget instead of $500.00, the gift fund rises to $600.00 and the per-person figure to $60.00. With 12 people instead of 10, the fund stays at $450.00 but the per-person figure falls to $37.50. With a $100.00 wrapping reserve, the fund falls to $400.00 and the per-person figure to $40.00. With 8 people, the fund stays at $450.00 and the per-person figure rises to $56.25.
The budget behind $45.00 per person is $500.00: at $400.00 the figures are gift fund $350.00, $35.00 per person; at $600.00 they are gift fund $550.00, $55.00 per person. The people behind $45.00 per person are 10: at 8 people the figures are gift fund $450.00, $56.25 per person; at 12 people they are gift fund $450.00, $37.50 per person. The wrapping reserve behind $45.00 per person is $50.00: at $0.00 the figures are gift fund $500.00, $50.00 per person; at $100.00 they are gift fund $400.00, $40.00 per person.
The defaults assume a $500.00 total budget, 10 people, and a $50.00 reserve for wrapping, cards and postage. They do not assume shipping for mailed gifts beyond the reserve, Black Friday discounts, or a tiered list; for a discounted shop, run the Black Friday budget calculator first and use its out-of-pocket figure as this budget.
The arithmetic is exact for the inputs entered; the judgement is the reserve and the people count. Real lists grow in December: a forgotten cousin or a new colleague joins late and the per-person figure falls unless the budget rises. Shipped gifts can eat the reserve fast — postage for several parcels can exceed $50.00 on its own. Treat the gift fund as fixed once set, and let late additions come out of the per-person average, not out of fresh money.

Students and researchers: cite the calculator name, the page URL and the date you used it, and quote the defaults ($500.00, 10 people, $50.00 wrapping reserve) so the $45.00 result can be checked.
Divide the gift fund by the people on the list: $450.00 ÷ 10 = $45.00 per person on the defaults. That is an average, not a fixed price — spend more on close family and less on acquaintances, as long as the tiers add up to the fund.
Paper, tape, ribbon, gift tags, cards and postage for the gifts you mail. $50.00 suits 10 people wrapped at home; a list that ships several parcels needs a larger reserve, or postage alone will break the budget.
Take the excess from another gift, not from fresh money: a $70.00 gift against a $45.00 average needs a $20.00 gift somewhere else to balance. If the whole list runs hot, raise the budget deliberately rather than drifting over it.
Keep the fund fixed and let the per-person figure fall, or tier hard: full gifts for close family, small gifts or cards for extended family. Adding people without adding money is the honest version of a bigger list.
No — a discount means the same gifts cost less, so the fund buys more gift, not more people. Plan the fund here first, then use the Black Friday budget calculator to turn it into a sticker price per gift for sale day.
Early enough that shipping is not an emergency: start in November, finish by mid-December, and check the holiday shipping deadline calculator for mailed gifts. Late buying costs more in express postage than any sale saves.
