How the final grade calculator works

Finals week math: enter your current grade, your target, and how much the final is worth — the calculator tells you exactly what score you need.

The formula

needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight (all as decimals)

Worked example

You have 82% going into a final worth 30%, and you want 85% overall. Needed = (0.85 − 0.82 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 ≈ 0.92 — you need about 92% on the final.

Where this comes in handy

  • Students: set a concrete target before finals week.
  • Planning: decide whether the goal is realistic or needs adjusting.
  • What-if: test how different final scores move the overall grade.
  • Teachers: show students the math behind grade outcomes.

Final Grade Calculator — frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the grade I need on my final?

Multiply your current grade by the non-final weight, subtract from your target, and divide by the final's weight. This calculator does it instantly.

What if the needed score is over 100%?

Then the target is mathematically out of reach with the final alone — even a perfect score will not get you there. Time to adjust the goal or talk to your instructor.

Do I use percentages or decimals?

Either works as long as you are consistent. The calculator accepts percentages directly.

What is a weighted grade?

A grade where components count unequally — for example, homework 20%, midterm 30%, final 50%. Each part contributes its weight to the total.

Should I round my current grade?

Use the most precise figure you have. Rounding early can shift the answer by a point or more on high-weight finals.
