Is $85.00 a visit the right DIY cost?
On the defaults — 2 hours at $30 an hour plus $25 of supplies, no tool rental, against a $175.00 quote, four visits a year — doing it yourself costs $85.00 a visit and hiring costs $175.00 a visit, so DIY wins by $90.00 a visit and DIY wins by $360.00 a year. A one-time professional pest-control visit typically costs about $150–$250, and a quarterly plan usually runs $100–$300 a visit depending on the pest and the house size; most homes on a plan get treated four times a year — once a quarter — because the spray wears off; a bottle of household insecticide, bait stations and traps runs roughly $20–$40 a visit, and a pump sprayer is the tool people forget to price in; a do-it-yourself treatment of a standard home takes roughly 1–3 hours including prep and cleanup; the per-year cost matters more than any single visit, because a missed quarter is when ants, roaches and mice come back.
Five things about the model are worth stating plainly. First, the DIY cost per visit is your hours times your hourly value, plus materials, plus tool rental — 2 × $30 + $25 + $0 = $85.00. Second, the hiring cost per visit is the exterminator’s quoted price — $175.00. Third, the winner is the lower per-visit cost — DIY wins by $90.00. Fourth, the per-year figures are the per-visit figures times the visits — DIY $340.00 against hiring $700.00, so DIY wins by $360.00 a year. And fifth, the per-year winner is always the same as the per-visit winner — the gap scales with the count, so six visits a year is a $540.00 saving; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.
The worked example, line by line
Setup: 2 hours at $30 an hour, $25 of materials, $0 tool rental, $175.00 quote, 4 visits a year.
Line 1 — the time cost. 2 hours × $30 an hour = $60.00.
Line 2 — the DIY cost per visit. $60.00 + $25.00 + $0.00 = $85.00.
Line 3 — the hiring cost per visit. The quote is $175.00.
Line 4 — the winner per visit. $175.00 − $85.00 = DIY wins by $90.00.
Line 5 — the year. DIY $85.00 × 4 = $340.00; hiring $175.00 × 4 = $700.00.
Line 6 — the winner per year. $700.00 − $340.00 = DIY wins by $360.00.
Line 7 — the check. Value your time at $75 an hour instead and the same job costs $175.00 yourself — an exact tie.
Every branch, checked
Materials $75: DIY $135.00 a visit; hiring $175.00 a visit — DIY wins by $40.00 a visit; per year DIY $540.00, hiring $700.00 — DIY wins by $160.00 a year — Spray and bait at $75 a visit still leaves DIY $40.00 ahead each visit — the $25 of supplies was never the deciding cost; your time is.
Quote $95: DIY $85.00 a visit; hiring $95.00 a visit — DIY wins by $10.00 a visit; per year DIY $340.00, hiring $380.00 — DIY wins by $40.00 a year — A $95.00 quote against an $85.00 DIY cost is still a DIY win by $10.00 — the quote must fall BELOW the DIY cost before hiring wins.
4 hours: DIY $145.00 a visit; hiring $175.00 a visit — DIY wins by $30.00 a visit; per year DIY $580.00, hiring $700.00 — DIY wins by $120.00 a year — Four hours of your time at $30 an hour is $120.00 of time plus $25 of supplies, so DIY costs $145.00 and still wins by $30.00 a visit.
Hourly value $60: DIY $145.00 a visit; hiring $175.00 a visit — DIY wins by $30.00 a visit; per year DIY $580.00, hiring $700.00 — DIY wins by $120.00 a year — Valuing your time at $60 an hour doubles the time cost to $120.00, so DIY costs $145.00 and still wins by $30.00 a visit — the same as four hours at $30.
Tool rental $100: DIY $185.00 a visit; hiring $175.00 a visit — Hiring wins by $10.00 a visit; per year DIY $740.00, hiring $700.00 — Hiring wins by $40.00 a year — A $100.00 sprayer rental pushes DIY to $185.00, past the $175.00 quote, so hiring wins by $10.00 a visit — the tool people forget to price in flips the answer.
Quote $300: DIY $85.00 a visit; hiring $300.00 a visit — DIY wins by $215.00 a visit; per year DIY $340.00, hiring $1,200.00 — DIY wins by $860.00 a year — Against a $300.00 quote the $85.00 DIY job wins by $215.00 a visit and $860.00 a year — the expensive quotes are where DIY pays best.
2 visits a year: DIY $85.00 a visit; hiring $175.00 a visit — DIY wins by $90.00 a visit; per year DIY $170.00, hiring $350.00 — annual saving $180.00 — With two visits a year the $90.00-a-visit gap is $180.00 a year — the per-visit winner is the same, but the annual saving scales with the count.

Who uses this
- The homeowner on a $175.00 quarterly plan: they learn DIY costs $85.00 a visit and wins by $90.00 — and they check the $95.00 quote branch to see the quote has to fall below $85.00 before hiring wins.
- The renter whose time is worth $60 an hour: they learn DIY still costs $145.00 and wins by $30.00 a visit — and they check the $75-an-hour reverse to see the exact tie point.
- The homeowner who has to rent the sprayer: they learn a $100.00 rental pushes DIY to $185.00 and hiring wins by $10.00 — and they check the materials reverse to see $165.00 of supplies is where hiring wins by $50.00.
- The planner counting the year, not the visit: they learn four visits a year is a $360.00 saving — and they check the six-visit reverse to see the saving reach $540.00.
Accuracy & limitations
The math is first-principles: the DIY cost is hours times hourly value plus materials plus rental, rounded to cents half-up; the hiring cost is the quote; the gap is the difference, printed as the absolute gap with the winner named, never as a signed number. What the model cannot do is price your pests: a $150–$250 visit is typical, but termites, bed bugs and wildlife cost far more and are not do-it-yourself jobs; the spray wears off, so a missed quarter can cost more than the saving; your hourly value is a judgment, not a wage — two free hours on a Saturday are not the same as two billable hours; and the calculator counts no re-treatment, no damage repair, and no guarantee — a professional plan usually includes free callbacks between visits. Use it to price the ordinary quarterly spray — then call a professional for anything that bites, stings, or eats the house.

Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to spray for pests yourself or hire an exterminator?
On the defaults, DIY is cheaper by $90.00 a visit. Doing it yourself costs $85.00 a visit — 2 hours at $30 an hour plus $25 of supplies — against a $175.00 quote, so DIY wins by $90.00 a visit and $360.00 a year at four visits a year.
How much does a professional pest-control visit cost?
About $150–$250 for a one-time visit, and $100–$300 a visit on a quarterly plan. The price depends on the pest and the house size. A $95.00 quote still loses to the $85.00 DIY cost — the quote has to fall below the DIY cost before hiring wins.
What does DIY pest control cost per visit?
$85.00 on the defaults. That is 2 hours at $30 an hour plus $25 of spray, bait and traps. With $75 of materials it is $135.00, and with a $100.00 sprayer rental it is $185.00 — past the $175.00 quote.
How do I value my time in the comparison?
At whatever an hour of your time is worth to you. At $30 an hour DIY wins by $90.00; at $60 an hour DIY still wins by $30.00; at $75 an hour it is an exact tie; at $100 an hour hiring wins by $50.00.
How many treatments a year do most homes need?
Four — once a quarter. The spray wears off, and a missed quarter is when ants, roaches and mice come back. The per-year saving is the per-visit gap times the visits: $90.00 times 4 is $360.00, and times 6 is $540.00.
When does hiring win?
When the DIY cost passes the quote. A $100.00 tool rental pushes DIY to $185.00, so hiring wins by $10.00; $200.00 of materials pushes DIY to $260.00, so hiring wins by $85.00; 6 hours of your time pushes DIY to $205.00, so hiring wins by $30.00.
What if the exterminator is free?
Hiring wins by the whole DIY cost. With a $0.00 quote hiring wins by $85.00 a visit and $340.00 a year — free always beats doing it yourself, at least on price.
How is this different from the other DIY-vs-hire calculators?
The existing DIY-vs-hire pages cover a roofer, a house cleaner, a painter, an electrician, a plumber, a landscaper, a handyman, snow removal and gutter cleaning — none of them covers pest control. Pest control is the quarterly job where the spray, the traps and your own time all have to be priced.
