Should you shovel it yourself or hire the plow?
On the defaults — 2 hours at $25.00 an hour, $20.00 of salt, no tool rental, a $90.00 plow quote, and 10 snowfalls a season — doing it yourself costs $70.00 a snowfall against a $90.00 quote, so DIY wins by $20.00 a snowfall and by $200.00 a season. A plow service typically charges about $50–$150 per visit, a bag of de-icer or salt runs roughly $15–$30, and renting a snowblower runs about $50–$100 a day — easy to forget when pricing the DIY route. Northern US homes average about 10–20 plowable snowfalls a season, which is why the per-season total matters more than any single quote.
Five things about the model are worth stating plainly. First, the DIY cost per snowfall is the hours times your hourly value plus materials plus tool rental — 2 × $25.00 + $20.00 + $0.00 = $70.00. Second, the hiring cost per snowfall is just the quote — $90.00. Third, the winner is the lower per-snowfall cost — DIY wins by $20.00. Fourth, the per-season totals are the per-snowfall costs times the snowfalls — DIY $700.00 against hiring $900.00, so DIY wins by $200.00 a season. And fifth, the per-season winner is always the same as the per-snowfall winner — the gap scales with the count, so a small per-storm saving is a big seasonal one; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.
The worked example, line by line
Setup: 2 DIY hours, $25.00 hourly value, $20.00 materials, $0.00 tool rental, $90.00 plow quote, 10 snowfalls a season.
Line 1 — the DIY cost per snowfall. The DIY cost is 2 × $25.00 + $20.00 + $0.00 = $70.00.
Line 2 — the hiring cost per snowfall. The hiring cost is the quote: $90.00.
Line 3 — the winner per snowfall. $70.00 is less than $90.00, so DIY wins by $20.00 a snowfall.
Line 4 — the per-season totals. DIY is $70.00 × 10 = $700.00 a season; hiring is $90.00 × 10 = $900.00 a season.
Line 5 — the winner per season. $700.00 is less than $900.00, so DIY wins by $200.00 a season.
The season, not the single snowfall
A single quote decides one storm; the season decides the money. On the defaults the per-snowfall gap is $20.00, which is $200.00 over ten snowfalls and $400.00 over twenty — the same decision, four times the money. That is why the calculator shows both: a $20.00 saving that looks small on one driveway visit is $200.00 of winter money, and a $50.00 hiring win on one storm is $500.00 over a ten-storm season. Count the storms before you count the dollars.

Who uses this
- The homeowner with a $90.00 plow quote: they learn doing it themselves costs $70.00 a snowfall, so DIY wins by $20.00 — and they check the 20-snowfall branch to see the saving reach $400.00 a season.
- The homeowner valuing their time at $50.00 an hour: they learn the same job costs $120.00 themselves, so hiring wins by $30.00 — and they check the $35.00 reverse to see the hourly value where the two tie.
- The homeowner pricing a snowblower rental: they learn a $60.00 rental pushes the DIY cost to $130.00, so hiring wins by $40.00 — and they check the $90.00 materials reverse to see hiring win by $50.00.
- The homeowner with a cheap $50.00 quote: they learn hiring wins by $20.00 a snowfall — and they check the 13-snowfall reverse to see how many storms it takes for DIY to save $250.00 a season.
Accuracy & limitations
The math is first-principles: the DIY cost per snowfall is the hours times the hourly value plus materials plus tool rental, rounded to cents; the hiring cost is the quote; the per-season totals are the per-snowfall costs times the snowfalls; each rounded to cents half-up. What the model cannot do is price your winter for you: the hourly value is yours to set, and most people undervalue their time — set it to what an hour of your Saturday is really worth; the hours are an average, but a wet heavy snowfall can take twice as long as a light one; the quote may not include salting, walkways, or a second pass after the plow comes through; and the snowfalls are a forecast, not a count — a mild winter halves the season total and a hard winter doubles it. Use it to compare the two routes on equal footing — then check what the quote actually covers before you sign.

Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to shovel snow yourself or hire someone?
DIY wins by $20.00 a snowfall on the defaults. Doing it yourself costs $70.00 a snowfall — 2 hours at $25.00 an hour plus $20.00 of salt — against a $90.00 plow quote, and $200.00 a season at ten snowfalls.
How much does a plow service cost per visit?
About $50–$150 per visit. At a $50.00 quote hiring wins by $20.00 a snowfall; at a $150.00 quote DIY wins by $80.00 a snowfall. Driveway size and snow depth move the quote.
