Should you do it yourself or hire a handyman?
On the defaults — 4 hours at $30.00 an hour plus $60.00 of materials — doing it yourself costs $180.00 a job against a $320.00 quote, so DIY wins by $140.00 a job and by $420.00 a season at three jobs a season. A handyman is the catch-all small-job trade: a dripping tap, a patched wall, a sticking door — the kind of job that repeats several times a year, which is why this calculator compares per-job AND per-season costs. Value your time at $60.00 an hour instead and the same job costs $300.00 yourself — DIY still wins, but only by $20.00.
Five things about the model are worth stating plainly. First, the DIY cost is the hours times your hourly value, plus materials, plus tool rental — 4 × $30.00 + $60.00 + $0.00 = $180.00. Second, the hiring cost is the quote — $320.00. Third, the winner is the lower per-job cost — DIY wins by $140.00. Fourth, the per-season figures are the per-job figures times the jobs per season — $180.00 × 3 = $540.00 against $320.00 × 3 = $960.00. And fifth, the per-season winner is the same as the per-job winner — the gap scales with the count, so $420.00 a season; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.
The worked example, line by line
Setup: 4 DIY hours, $30.00 an hour of your time, $60.00 of materials, $0.00 of tool rental, a $320.00 handyman quote, 3 jobs a season.
Line 1 — the DIY cost. The DIY cost is 4 × $30.00 + $60.00 + $0.00 = $120.00 + $60.00 = $180.00.
Line 2 — the hiring cost. The hiring cost is the quote: $320.00.
Line 3 — the winner per job. $180.00 is less than $320.00, so DIY wins by $320.00 − $180.00 = $140.00 a job.
Line 4 — the season. DIY costs $180.00 × 3 = $540.00 a season; hiring costs $320.00 × 3 = $960.00 a season; DIY wins by $420.00 a season.
The season, not the single job
A single handyman job is rarely the question — most homes need a handyman 2–4 times a year, so the per-season total is what matters. On the defaults DIY wins by $140.00 a job, which is $420.00 a season at 3 jobs and $840.00 a season at 6 jobs. The per-season winner is always the same as the per-job winner, because both sides scale by the same count — but the size of the prize grows with every job. A quote that looks close on one job can be a $500.00-a-season decision: at 4 jobs a season the seasonal saving reaches $560.00, and at 3 jobs it is only $420.00 — below $500.00.

- The homeowner who forgets tool rental: they learn $100.00 of rental takes the DIY cost to $280.00 — and they check the $300.00 reverse to see the materials that let hiring win by $100.00.

Accuracy & limitations
The math is first-principles: the DIY cost is the hours times your hourly value plus materials plus tool rental, rounded to cents; the hiring cost is the quote; the gap is the absolute difference of the rounded totals; the per-season figures are the per-job figures times the jobs per season — each rounded to cents half-up. What the model cannot do is price the job for you: your hourly value is a judgment, not a wage — an evening hour and a workday hour are worth different amounts; the quote is one handyman’s price, and quotes for the same job vary widely; materials are estimated before the job starts, and a hidden problem (rotten wood behind the wall, a seized fitting) can double them; a handyman brings tools and practice, so the hours you enter are your hours, not theirs; and the model counts money only — the satisfaction of doing it yourself, and the risk of doing it badly, are not in the numbers. Use it to compare the two routes on equal footing — then get the quote, check the materials, and be honest about your hours.
Frequently asked questions
Should I hire a handyman or do it myself?
On the defaults, do it yourself — by $140.00 a job. DIY costs $180.00 a job against a $320.00 quote, and $420.00 a season at 3 jobs. But value your time at $65.00 an hour and the DIY cost is exactly the $320.00 quote — a tie.
How much does a handyman cost?
About $50–$100 an hour, or a flat quote of a few hundred dollars for a standard small job. The default quote here is $320.00. Get the quote first — it is the whole question.
What is my time worth for a DIY job?
Whatever an hour of your time is worth to you — the default is $30.00. At $30.00 an hour the job costs $180.00 yourself; at $60.00 an hour it costs $300.00; at $65.00 an hour it costs exactly the $320.00 quote.
How many jobs a season make DIY worth it?
4 jobs for a $500.00 seasonal saving. At 4 jobs a season the saving is $560.00; at 3 jobs it is $420.00. The per-job gap of $140.00 scales with the count.
What quote makes hiring cheaper than DIY?
Any quote under $180.00. At a $180.00 quote it is an exact tie; at a $150.00 quote hiring wins by $30.00 a job, $90.00 a season.
What if the materials cost more than I thought?
At $300.00 of materials hiring wins by $100.00. The DIY cost is $420.00 against the $320.00 quote. Materials are the part homeowners underestimate most.
Does tool rental change the answer?
Yes, by exactly the rental. With $100.00 of tool rental the DIY cost is $280.00, so DIY wins by $40.00 instead of $140.00.
What if the job takes longer than I expect?
At 8.67 hours the DIY cost reaches the $320.00 quote. At 8.66 hours the DIY cost is $319.80 — DIY still wins by $0.20. At 10 hours the DIY cost is $360.00 and hiring wins by $40.00.
