What does a $135.00 DIY win mean?
On the defaults — a $120 fixture, $25 of supplies, 2 hours at $60 an hour and a $400 pro quote — the DIY cost is $265.00 and DIY wins by $135.00. The DIY cost is the fixture price plus the supplies plus your hours at your hourly value: $120 + $25 + 2 × $60 = $265.00. The win is the pro cost minus the DIY cost — if the win is positive, DIY wins by that much; if the win is negative, hiring wins by that much; if the win is zero, it is an exact tie. A $135.00 saving is real money, but it is not the whole story: a pro carries insurance, guarantees the fixture is level and the wiring is safe, and takes the risk of a ceiling box that will not hold the fixture and a fixture that will not sit straight. DIY wins on price; hiring wins on risk. This calculator prices the money — you price the risk.
Three things about the model are worth stating plainly.
First, there is no division here — this is addition and multiplication, not a ratio: $120 + $25 + 2 × $60 = $265.00. Second, the meaning is one hundred and thirty-five dollars saved by fitting the light fixture yourself — the price of your time, not the price of the fixture. And third, the DIY cost is displayed to two decimals, half-up, and a DIY cost that displays as $287.48 can sit a hair below the displayed figure: a $119.95 fixture, $24.40 of supplies and 2.5 hours at $57.25 an hour gives 287.475, which displays as $287.48 — all listed in Accuracy & limitations.
The worked example, line by line
Setup: fixture $120, supplies $25, 2 hours, $60 an hour, pro $400.
Line 1 — the DIY cost. $120 + $25 + 2 × $60 = $265.00.
Line 2 — the win. $400.00 − $265.00 = $135.00.
Line 3 — the check. At $128 an hour the DIY cost is $401.00 and hiring wins by $1.00; and at $127 an hour it is $399.00 — DIY wins by $1.00, so there is no tie.

The reverses, worked backwards
Smallest hourly value where hiring WINS: At the displayed $128 the figures are DIY $401.00; pro $400.00 — Hiring wins by $1.00. At $127 an hour the figures are DIY $399.00; pro $400.00 — DIY wins by $1.00 — no tie — so $128 an hour is the smallest hourly value where hiring wins.
Largest hourly value where DIY still wins by at least $100.00: At the displayed $77 the figures are DIY $299.00; pro $400.00 — DIY wins by $101.00. At $78 an hour the figures are DIY $301.00; pro $400.00 — DIY wins by $99.00 — DIY wins by $99.00 — below the $100.00 target — so $77 an hour is the largest hourly value where DIY still wins by at least $100.00.
Smallest fixture price where hiring WINS: At the displayed $256 the figures are DIY $401.00; pro $400.00 — Hiring wins by $1.00. At $255 the figures are DIY $400.00; pro $400.00 — exact tie — a dead heat, a TIE — so $256 is the smallest fixture price where hiring wins.

A warning about the ties: at $255 of fixture price the DIY cost is $400.00 — a dead heat, a TIE, not a hiring win — and at $256 it is $401.00 and hiring wins by $1.00. At $160 of supplies the DIY cost is $400.00 — a dead heat, a TIE — and at $161 it is $401.00 and hiring wins by $1.00. At $265 of pro price the pro cost is $265.00 — a dead heat, a TIE, not a DIY win — and at $266 it is $266.00 and DIY wins by $1.00. There is no tie at $127 an hour, $77 an hour or 4 hours: at $127 DIY wins by $1.00 and at $128 hiring wins by $1.00; at $77 DIY wins by $101.00 and at $78 DIY wins by $99.00; at 4 hours DIY wins by $15.00 and at 5 hours hiring wins by $45.00.

With Fixture $0, supplies $10, 1 hour, $50 an hour, pro $150, DIY $60.00; pro $150.00 — DIY wins by $90.00 — a fixture you already own, so the DIY cost is mostly your time.
A note on the rounding: the DIY cost is displayed to two decimals, half-up. With the fractional inputs the unrounded DIY cost is 287.475 and the unrounded win is 62.125 — they display as $287.48 and $62.13. The page prints the unrounded values so the rounding does not mislead you.

Who uses this
- The homeowner replacing a light fixture: they learn a $120 fixture, $25 of supplies and 2 hours at $60 an hour costs $265.00 DIY against a $400.00 pro quote — and they check the $128 reverse to see the hourly value where hiring takes the lead.
- The renter fitting a new fixture: they learn the supplies are the wire connectors, the mounting bracket, the screws and the sealant, not the fixture alone — and they check the $256 reverse to see the fixture price where hiring wins.
- The weekend DIYer pricing their time: they learn 2 hours at $60 an hour is $120 of their own time — and they check the 5-hour reverse to see the hours where hiring wins.
- The landlord comparing quotes: they learn a $265.00 DIY cost against a $400.00 pro quote is a $135.00 win — and they check the $266 reverse to see the pro price where DIY wins at all.
Accuracy & limitations
The math is first-principles: the DIY cost is the fixture price plus the supplies plus the hours times your hourly value, and the win is the pro cost minus the DIY cost — all in dollars, displayed to two decimals half-up. There is no division in this calculator — nothing is ever undefined. At a $255 fixture price the DIY cost is $400.00 — a dead heat, a TIE, not a hiring win — and at $160 of supplies the DIY cost is $400.00 — a dead heat, a TIE — and at a $265 pro price the pro cost is $265.00 — a dead heat, a TIE. With the fractional inputs the unrounded DIY cost is 287.475 and the unrounded win is 62.125 — they display as $287.48 and $62.13. What the model cannot do is price the risk: it says nothing about a ceiling box that will not hold the fixture, a fixture that will not sit level, or a pro who guarantees the work. It also says nothing about whether the pro quote includes the fixture — check that before you compare, or the comparison is wrong before it starts. Use it to see whether fitting the light fixture yourself saves money — then check the electrician and ceiling-fan comparisons before you decide the whole room is a DIY job.

Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to install a light fixture yourself?
On the defaults, yes — by $135.00. Fitting a light fixture yourself costs $265.00 against a $400.00 pro quote. The DIY cost is the fixture price plus the supplies plus your hours at your hourly value.
How do I calculate the DIY cost of a light fixture installation?
Add the fixture, the supplies and your time. $120 + $25 + 2 × $60 = $265.00. The pro quote is the whole job — check whether it includes the fixture before you compare.
What does a $135.00 DIY win mean?
Fitting the light fixture yourself saves $135.00. At a $120 fixture, $25 of supplies and 2 hours at $60 an hour, the DIY cost is $265.00 against a $400.00 pro quote.
At what hourly value does hiring win?
$128 an hour. The smallest hourly value where hiring wins is $128 an hour. At $127 an hour the DIY cost is $399.00 — DIY wins by $1.00, so there is no tie.
At what fixture price does hiring win?
$256. The smallest fixture price where hiring wins is $256. At $255 the DIY cost is $400.00 — a dead heat, a TIE, not a hiring win.
What if the pro quote is only $265?
It is a dead heat. At a $265 pro quote the pro cost is $265.00 and the DIY cost is $265.00 — an exact tie. At $266 DIY wins by $1.00.
What is the difference between light fixture installation and hiring an electrician?
One prices a single fixture job, the other any electrical job. Light fixture installation prices fitting a new light fixture — the fixture, the supplies and your hours — against a flat pro price. Hiring an electrician prices any electrical job at an hourly electrician rate, and a light-fixture swap appears only as one worked example inside it. Work it out in the DIY vs hire an electrician calculator.
