Is $65.00 a cleaning the right DIY cost?
On the defaults — 2 hours at $25.00 an hour, $15.00 of supplies, no tool rental, a $125.00 quote and 2 cleanings a year — doing it yourself costs $65.00 a cleaning against a $125.00 quote, so DIY wins by $60.00 a cleaning and by $120.00 a year. A professional gutter cleaning typically costs about $75–$250, depending on house size, gutter length and how clogged they are; most homes need it twice a year — once after the spring seed drop and once after the autumn leaves fall.
Five things about the model are worth stating plainly. First, the DIY cost per cleaning is the hours times your hourly value plus materials plus tool rental — 2 × $25.00 + $15.00 + $0.00 = $65.00. Second, the hiring cost per cleaning is the cleaner’s quoted price — $125.00. Third, the winner is the lower per-cleaning cost — $65.00 against $125.00, so DIY wins by $60.00. Fourth, the per-year winner is the same — the gap scales with the count: $65.00 × 2 = $130.00 against $125.00 × 2 = $250.00, so DIY wins by $120.00 a year. And fifth, your hourly value is the lever — value your time at $55.00 an hour instead and the same job costs $125.00 yourself, an exact tie; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.
The worked example, line by line
Setup: 2 hours of DIY, $25.00 an hour, $15.00 of materials, $0.00 tool rental, $125.00 cleaner quote, 2 cleanings a year.
Line 1 — DIY per cleaning. The DIY cost is 2 × $25.00 + $15.00 + $0.00 = $65.00.
Line 2 — hiring per cleaning. The hiring cost is the quote — $125.00.
Line 3 — winner per cleaning. $65.00 against $125.00 — DIY wins by $60.00.
Line 4 — per year. $65.00 × 2 = $130.00 against $125.00 × 2 = $250.00 — DIY wins by $120.00 a year.
Line 5 — the check. $65.00 + $60.00 = $125.00, the quote.

Who uses this
- The homeowner with a $125.00 quote in hand: they learn doing it themselves costs $65.00 — and they check the $75.00 quote branch to see DIY still wins by $10.00 even at a much lower quote.
- The homeowner who values their time at $50.00 an hour: they learn the DIY cost is $115.00 — and they check the $55.00 reverse to see the hourly value where the job becomes an exact tie.
- The homeowner pricing a ladder stabilizer rental: they learn a $75.00 rental flips the answer — hiring wins by $15.00 — and they check the $125.00 materials reverse to see the supplies that would make hiring win by $50.00.
- The homeowner with heavy leaf fall: they learn four cleanings a year saves $240.00 — and they check the 3-cleanings reverse to see the count where the annual saving first reaches $150.00.
Accuracy & limitations
The math is first-principles: the DIY cost per cleaning is the hours times your hourly value plus materials plus tool rental, the hiring cost per cleaning is the quote, and the per-year figures are the per-cleaning figures times the cleanings per year; all figures are rounded to cents. What the model cannot do is price your time for you: the hourly value is a judgment, and a Saturday afternoon is worth a different amount to different people; the quote range is typical ($75–$250), but a tall house or badly clogged gutters can cost far more; a pair of gloves, a scoop and a bucket run roughly $10–$20, and a ladder stabilizer or gutter-cleaning wand is the tool people forget to price in; cleaning a standard single-storey home takes roughly 1–3 hours depending on the leaf load; and the model counts no ladder risk, no mess, and no value for a job done well. Clogged gutters are not just cosmetic — overflow can rot fascia boards and flood foundations, which is why the per-year cost matters more than any single quote.

Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to clean gutters yourself or hire someone?
On the defaults, doing it yourself. DIY costs $65.00 a cleaning — 2 hours at $25.00 an hour plus $15.00 of supplies — against a $125.00 quote, so DIY wins by $60.00 a cleaning and by $120.00 a year.
How much does professional gutter cleaning cost?
About $75–$250. The price depends on house size, gutter length and how clogged they are. A $75.00 quote is still above the $65.00 DIY cost, so DIY still wins by $10.00.
How often should gutters be cleaned?
Twice a year for most homes. Once after the spring seed drop and once after the autumn leaves fall — which is why this calculator compares per-cleaning AND per-year costs.
How long does it take to clean gutters yourself?
Roughly 1–3 hours for a standard single-storey home. At 4 hours the DIY cost is $115.00 and DIY still wins by $10.00; at 6 hours it is $165.00 and hiring wins by $40.00.
What supplies do I need to clean gutters myself?
A pair of gloves, a scoop and a bucket — roughly $10–$20. A ladder stabilizer or gutter-cleaning wand is the tool people forget to price in: a $75.00 rental flips the answer to hiring by $15.00.
When does hiring win?
When the quote falls below the DIY cost. The quote must fall below $65.00 before hiring wins — at $40.00 hiring wins by $25.00. A $75.00 rental or $200.00 of materials also flips it.
What does a $75 quote change?
Nothing about the winner. A $75.00 quote against a $65.00 DIY cost is still a DIY win by $10.00 a cleaning and by $20.00 a year.
Why does the per-year cost matter more than one quote?
Because the job repeats. Two cleanings a year turns a $60.00 per-cleaning win into $120.00 a year, and four cleanings into $240.00 — and clogged gutters can rot fascia boards and flood foundations.
