Is $249.00 the right DIY cost for a 600 sq ft driveway?
On the defaults — a 600-square-foot driveway, a $0.50-a-square-foot pro quote, $35.00-a-bucket sealer covering 250 square feet a bucket, $40.00 of supplies and 5 hours of your time at $25.00 an hour — sealing the driveway yourself costs $249.00, or $0.42 a square foot, against a $300.00 pro quote, so DIY wins by $51.00. The DIY cost is the sealer plus the supplies plus your hours valued at your hourly rate; the pro cost is the driveway area times the pro rate per square foot. A professional job typically costs $0.25–$0.75 per square foot, with $0.50 a common middle quote, and the price usually includes cleaning and prep. A 5-gallon bucket of driveway sealer typically costs $25–$50, with $35 a common price, and covers about 250 square feet. Supplies run about $30–$50, with $40 a common figure. A first-timer should allow about 4–6 hours for a 600-square-foot driveway.
Four things about the model are worth stating plainly. First, the sealer costs $84.00 — 600 ÷ 250 = 2.4 buckets’ worth × $35.00. Second, the DIY cost is $249.00 — $84.00 of sealer + $40.00 of supplies + 5 × $25.00 of your time. Third, the pro cost is $300.00 — 600 × $0.50. And fourth, DIY wins by $51.00 — but the answer turns on your hourly value: at $35.20 an hour the two ways tie, and at $36.00 an hour hiring wins; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.
The worked example, line by line
Setup: 600 sq ft driveway, pro rate $0.50/sq ft, sealer $35.00 per 5-gal bucket covering 250 sq ft/bucket, supplies $40.00, 5 hours at $25.00 an hour.
Line 1 — the sealer. The sealer costs 600 ÷ 250 = 2.4 buckets’ worth × $35.00 = $84.00.
Line 2 — the DIY cost. The DIY cost is $84.00 + $40.00 + 5 × $25.00 = $249.00, or $249.00 ÷ 600 = $0.42 per square foot.
Line 3 — the pro cost. The pro cost is 600 × $0.50 = $300.00, or $0.50 per square foot.
Line 4 — the winner. $300.00 − $249.00 = $51.00 — DIY wins by $51.00.
Line 5 — the check. $84.00 + $40.00 + $125.00 = $249.00, the DIY cost; and $249.00 + $51.00 = $300.00, the pro quote.

A note on the rounding: at the $0.42/sq ft rate the per-square-foot figures round the same — both sides show $0.42 per square foot, DIY $249.00 and pro $252.00 — while the totals differ by $3.00. The per-square-foot figures are computed in whole cents, so the displayed value is the half-up value: 249 ÷ 600 = 0.415 rounds to $0.42.

Accuracy & limitations
The math is first-principles: the sealer is the driveway area divided by the coverage times the sealer price per bucket; the DIY cost is the sealer plus the supplies plus the hours times the hourly value; the pro cost is the driveway area times the pro rate per square foot; the winner is the lower total. The per-square-foot figures are computed in whole cents, so the displayed value is the half-up value — 249 ÷ 600 = 0.415 rounds to $0.42. The reverses are judged on the UNROUNDED totals: at $0.41/sq ft the pro total is $246.00, below the $249.00 DIY cost, so hiring wins. What the model cannot do is price your driveway: the $0.25–$0.75 pro range and the $25–$50 sealer range are typical figures, not quotes; a driveway that needs crack filling, oil-spot cleaning or two coats costs more either way; and the hourly value is yours to set — an hour of a Saturday is not worth the same to everyone. Use it to see which side wins on your numbers — then get a real quote before you buy sealer.

Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to seal the driveway yourself or hire a pro?
DIY on a 600 sq ft driveway, by $51.00. Sealing it yourself costs $249.00 — $84.00 of sealer, $40.00 of supplies and 5 hours at $25.00 an hour — against a $300.00 pro quote. With a 1,200 sq ft driveway DIY wins by $267.00, and with only a $0.25/sq ft quote hiring wins by $99.00.
How much does a pro charge per square foot to seal a driveway?
Typically $0.25–$0.75 per square foot. A common middle quote is $0.50 a square foot. At $0.42 a square foot the pro total is $252.00 and DIY wins by $3.00; at $0.41 a square foot the pro total is $246.00 and hiring wins by $3.00.
How much sealer do I need for a 600 sq ft driveway?
About 2.4 buckets’ worth. A bucket covers about 250 square feet, so 600 ÷ 250 = 2.4 buckets’ worth. At $35.00 a bucket that is $84.00 of sealer — in practice you buy three buckets and keep the spare.
How much is my time worth in the comparison?
Whatever an hour of your time is worth to you. At $25.00 an hour DIY wins by $51.00 on a 600 sq ft driveway; at $36.00 an hour hiring wins by $4.00; and at $0.00 an hour — your time is free — DIY costs $124.00 and wins by $176.00.
When does hiring win?
With a cheap quote, pricey time or pricey supplies. Hiring wins by $99.00 when the pro rate is $0.25 a square foot, by $4.00 when your time is $36.00 an hour, and by $1.00 when supplies are $92.00. The smallest whole-dollar supplies where hiring wins is $92.00 — at $91.00 the two ways tie exactly.
How big a quote before DIY wins by $100?
A $0.59 pro rate does it on 600 sq ft. At $0.59 a square foot the pro total is $354.00 and DIY wins by $105.00. At $0.58 a square foot the pro total is $348.00 and DIY wins by $99.00 — below $100. The exact rate is 600 × rate − 249 ≥ 100, so rate ≥ 0.581667.
How often should a driveway be re-sealed?
Every 2–3 years. Prep — cleaning, and filling cracks first — is what makes the new coat last. A pro also spots cracks, drainage problems and soft spots a squeegee cannot fix.
