How a kitchen wall is sized in cabinets

A kitchen wall is sized in whole cabinets, and a cabinet is sized in inches. The wall length in feet times 12 is the wall in inches, and the cabinets that fit are the wall in inches divided by the cabinet width, rounded DOWN — a cabinet that does not fit whole does not fit at all. The covered width is the cabinets times the width, and the leftover is the wall minus the covered width. A leftover of 0 in is an exact fit with no filler needed. A leftover of 1–8 in takes a filler panel cut to the gap. A leftover of 9 in or more takes one more cabinet of that width, or a filler panel the same size. Sizes are industry-standard nominal sizes and brands vary by ±1/4 in, so check the label before you buy.

At the defaults — a 12 ft wall and 24-in cabinets — the wall is 12 × 12 = 144 in. The cabinets are 144 ÷ 24 = 6 cabinets. The covered width is 6 × 24 = 144.00 in, which is 12 ft 0 in and 365.76 cm. The leftover is 144 − 144 = 0.00 in — an exact fit, no filler needed.

The worked example, line by line

Setup: wall length 12 ft, cabinet width 24 in.

Line 1 — the wall in inches. 12 × 12 = 144 in.

Line 2 — the cabinets that fit. 144 ÷ 24 = 6 cabinets.

Line 3 — the covered width. 6 × 24 = 144.00 in, which is 12 ft 0 in and 365.76 cm.

Line 4 — the leftover. 144 − 144 = 0.00 in.

Line 5 — the guidance. The leftover is 0 in, so it is an exact fit — no filler needed.

Reverse: eight 24-in cabinets need exactly a 16.00 ft wall (192 in); ten 30-in cabinets need exactly a 25.00 ft wall (300 in); a 13-ft wall at 24 in fits 6 cabinets with a 12.00-in filler.

Every branch, checked

10 ft wall, 24-in cabinets: the wall is 120 in, so 120 ÷ 24 = 5 cabinets and the covered width is 120.00 in. The leftover is 0.00 in — an exact fit.

11 ft wall, 24-in cabinets: the wall is 132 in, so 132 ÷ 24 = 5.5, rounded down to 5 cabinets, and the covered width is 120.00 in. The leftover is 12.00 in — one more 12-in cabinet, or a 12-in filler panel. Half a cabinet is no cabinet at all.

8 ft wall, 18-in cabinets: the wall is 96 in, so 96 ÷ 18 = 5.33, rounded down to 5 cabinets, and the covered width is 90.00 in. The leftover is 6.00 in — a 6-in filler panel.

15 ft wall, 30-in cabinets: the wall is 180 in, so 180 ÷ 30 = 6 cabinets and the covered width is 180.00 in. The leftover is 0.00 in — an exact fit.

9 ft wall, 36-in cabinets: the wall is 108 in, so 108 ÷ 36 = 3 cabinets and the covered width is 108.00 in. The leftover is 0.00 in — an exact fit.

13 ft wall, 24-in cabinets: the wall is 156 in, so 156 ÷ 24 = 6.5, rounded down to 6 cabinets, and the covered width is 144.00 in. The leftover is 12.00 in — one more 12-in cabinet, or a 12-in filler panel.

10 ft wall, 15-in cabinets: the wall is 120 in, so 120 ÷ 15 = 8 cabinets and the covered width is 120.00 in. The leftover is 0.00 in — an exact fit. Narrower cabinets fit more of them, and here they fit exactly.

7 ft wall, 12-in cabinets: the wall is 84 in, so 84 ÷ 12 = 7 cabinets and the covered width is 84.00 in. The leftover is 0.00 in — an exact fit.

10.5 ft wall, 18-in cabinets: the wall is 126 in, so 126 ÷ 18 = 7 cabinets and the covered width is 126.00 in. The leftover is 0.00 in — an exact fit, even with a half-foot wall.

Reverse — the other way round: eight 24-in cabinets need exactly a 16.00 ft wall; ten 30-in cabinets need exactly a 25.00 ft wall; a 13-ft wall at 24 in fits 6 cabinets with a 12.00-in filler.

What the defaults assume

The model assumes the wall length and cabinet width you enter, one row of cabinets along the wall, and the table’s industry-standard nominal sizes. It assumes the wall length you enter is the length the cabinets go on, not the length of the room — a wall with a door or a window in it has less room than the room does, so measure the run, not the room. It leaves out corner cabinets, which take a 36-in corner, and the toe kick, which is 4.5 in high and recessed 3 in under the cabinets. Rounding convention: inches are shown to two decimals, the cabinet count is a whole number rounded down, and all figures are computed from unrounded values, rounded only for display.

Who uses this

  • The homeowner planning a new kitchen: they learn a 12 ft wall takes 6 cabinets of 24 in, an exact fit — so they know the shopping list, and they check the 11 ft case at 5 cabinets plus a 12-in filler before ordering.
  • The kitchen designer working out a run: they learn eight 24-in cabinets need exactly a 16.00 ft wall — so they know how far the run goes, and they check the 10-cabinet case at 25.00 ft before drawing the plan.
  • The DIYer with a short wall: they learn an 8 ft wall at 18 in takes 5 cabinets and a 6-in filler panel — so they know the gap is a filler, not a cut cabinet, and they check the 1 ft case at 0 cabinets before assuming anything fits.
  • The budget builder stretching the money: they learn a 15 ft wall at 30 in takes 6 cabinets — so they know fewer, wider cabinets cover the same wall, and they check the 10 ft at 15 in case at 8 cabinets before choosing the width.

Accuracy & limitations

The math is exact for the numbers you enter: the cabinets are the wall in inches divided by the width, rounded down, the covered width is the cabinets times the width, and the leftover is the wall minus the covered width. What the model cannot do is measure your wall: check the length, because a wall with a door or a window in it has less room than the room does, and a wall measured from the plan will come up long. It assumes one row of cabinets and leaves out corner cabinets and the toe kick. Sizes are industry-standard nominal sizes and brands vary by ±1/4 in — check the label. Frequently asked questions

How many 24-inch cabinets fit a 12-foot wall?

6, an exact fit. A 12 ft wall is 144 in, and 144 divided by 24 is 6, so 6 cabinets cover 144.00 in and the leftover is 0.00 in — no filler needed. A 10 ft wall at 24 in fits 5 cabinets and covers 120.00 in, also an exact fit. An 11 ft wall at 24 in fits 5 cabinets and covers 120.00 in, leaving 12.00 in — one more 12-in cabinet, or a 12-in filler panel.

What is the standard base cabinet height?

34.5 in, and 36 in with the countertop on. A base cabinet is 34.5 in tall and 24 in deep, and the countertop adds about 1.5 in to bring the working height to 36 in. Wall cabinets are 12 in deep and hang above the counters, and tall or pantry cabinets run 84, 90 or 96 in to the ceiling.

Why are wall cabinets only 12 inches deep?

So they do not hit you in the head. A wall cabinet hangs above the counter, and at 12 in deep it clears the work below while still holding plates and glasses. A base cabinet is 24 in deep because it sits on the floor under the countertop, where the depth is useful and nobody walks into it. The over-range cabinet is 12–15 in deep for the same reason, and the over-refrigerator cabinet is 24 in deep because it sits above the fridge, out of the way.

What do I do with a leftover under 3 inches?

Fit a filler panel, never cut a cabinet. A leftover of 1–8 in takes a filler panel cut to the gap: an 8 ft wall at 18 in leaves 6.00 in, so a 6-in filler panel fills it. A leftover under 3 in is still a filler panel, just a narrow one — cutting a cabinet down to fit is the one thing not to do, because it ruins the door, the drawer and the warranty. A leftover of 9 in or more takes one more cabinet, or a filler panel the same size.

What if the wall is shorter than one cabinet?

Then no cabinet fits, and the whole wall is filler. A 1 ft wall at 24 in is 12 in long, so 0 cabinets fit and the leftover is 12.00 in — filler only. The same is true of any wall under one cabinet wide: measure the wall before you order, because the calculator cannot make a cabinet fit where there is no room for it.

What widths do base cabinets come in?

9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36, 42 and 48 in. The most common are 24, 30 and 36 in: a 15 ft wall at 30 in fits 6 cabinets exactly, and a 9 ft wall at 36 in fits 3 cabinets exactly. Drawer bases come in 12, 15, 18, 24, 30 and 36 in, and sink bases in 24, 30, 33 and 36 in. Sizes are industry-standard nominal sizes and brands vary by ±1/4 in, so check the label before you buy.
